Its so funny how buttstung alot of Euros will get when they hear an American say "Im Italian" etc. In an American context everyone knows what you mean. Americans dont think they're the same as literal Italians, that's almost how some seem to treat it.
I also love how Europeans and their relationship with the US changes based on whatever way the wind blows. If its something that looks good for Europeans they'll hit the "Well the US was built by Europeans" number. In almost any other case theyll downplay or deny any type of kinship with the US and Americans.
It's because a lot of them say it in a European context too. American tourists often come to Ireland and tell the people they meet that they themselves are Irish. Understandably it causes some confusion. We understand that what they mean is that they have Irish heritage but we find it kind of strange to phrase it as "I am Irish" when they weren't born in Ireland and don't know the culture at all.
