Jeopardy! (CD-i) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

  • A single game, single player playthrough of Philips Media's 1994 CD-I game, Jeopardy!
Played using the wireless remote control. The mouse is entirely too cumbersome and twitchy in the menus. The video was recorded from a DVS VE200 model CD-I console (dated 1998, built-in digital video cart) through the composite connector plugged into an X-Capture 1 capture card. The couple times that the graphics are get corrupted are a result of the game itself glitching - it was not a result of bad compression, faulty capture hardware, nor anything but some programming error that apparently wasn't caught before release.
Even though it lacks a bit of personality thanks to the complete absence of an AI player or player avatars, it is impressive for its authentic replication of the shows sights and sounds - especially in that there are voice recordings reading every single question and answer, and it even provides a database of common names so that the game will refer to each play by name. The CD-I is justifiably notorious for the quality of the typical "game" made for it, but this was quite a respectable effort!

The CD-I provides a thoroughly respectable version of the classic game show (which is impressive, given the quality of most of the CD-I's software), going so far as to include full voice-overs for every question and answer. Too bad they left out character avatars.

This game is quite advanced for its time, Having Alex Tribek saying the players name if it’s in the database of the game. Also Charlie O’Donald did the announcing and not Johnny Gilbert, probably they could not get Johnny do to not having the time to get him to record the lines or the money. And this is one of the games not made by Hasbro Interactive since they did both Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune games for the PC and PlayStation.

I'm confused, because as far as I know, there was never a CD-i console with more than two controller ports on it. Is there a multi-tap peripheral, or do four players have to share two controllers, or what?

I was able to sweep the Sunken Ships category. That's a shame that glitch kept you from getting the Andrea Doria clue. BTW, I know there were two game show titles that were planned for the CD-I but scrapped. Wheel of Fortune was one of them, much to my dismay. The other was The Price is Right.

NintendoComplete Oh, there's no question that would've been awesome had they been released, considering that Wheel and Price are my two favorite game shows. Now there were supposed to be some Wheel games for the 3DO, the Saturn, and even the Game Boy Color, but sadly, none of them worked out either. The Saturn version was perhaps the closest of the three to making it.
