This video was given a good mention in April's edition of Q Magazine. That makes me feel special on the inside.

There's nothing awkward about someone not wanting to answer personal questions.

I don't think they were personal. He was asking about the band and the relationships INSIDE the band and if Thom had any plans of quitting or doing solo work. Those are perfectly apt questions to ask someone in a BAND. All he had to say was a gloss over like yeah, we've had problems but who hasn't? Next question. Plan to quit? Nope. That's it. But Thom got pissed and I think he could have been a little bit less pissed because each interviewer has the right to ask questions and so he can just say can we talk about some POSITIVE things instead of negative? lots of ways.
@@TruthSurge could be, but he is very clever rejecting this kind of questions that makes any type of controversy. And he is not pissed, he was smiling, but the interviewer wanted dig more to make this controversy. Then Thom just had to explain. Radiohead is NOT a boy band, they dont sell gossip

while i respect this, imagine how the interviewer feels in this situation. its not really the interviewers fault in the end, its the fault of the higher ups/businessmen. being douchey to someone who isnt the problem is just being douchey, not being assertive.

Yorke is damn right about this. Every artist has a right to ignore and refuse to answer questions during interviews. He's actually one of the few artists that doesnt want to sell his private life, even if it's about the band. It is very clear that he doesnt want people to mess with his life.

Thom Yorke didn't want to open that door for interviewers. It's completely understandable. The interviewer kept hounding him about the subject so Thom got agitated and reacted. That's not awkward at all.

Elliotte Rodriguez He did gave an honest straight answer which was: Yes there were struggles and difficulties and it's their business, no anyone elses. Easiest thing for Thom would've been lying and say that everything is all milk and cookies but the interviewer should have stopped and not take the role of a reporter.

Thom Yorke is a genius.
I adore how he just says "no." when asked about the specifics of the band's relationships, really shows his side of discretion, something a lot of popular figures do not have.

The fact that the interviewer is trying to bait him into talking shit about his mates shows what a class act Thom is.
Seriously, I applaud Thom Yorke so hard for all he's done, him and Radiohead. They are possibly the only artists who don't feel the need to dig up their shit so the public can feed on their emotions. That and they're artistic vision doesn't seem to be misrepresented by their albums. The music industry tends to change people and their music into something more sellable. God knows Kid A wasn't sellable when it was released, but it was their vision and that is totally beautiful.
i like how he stood his ground and still sounded dignified. I would've either acted very timid or started cussing out the interviewer if I were him.

Radiohead has been my favorite band since 5th grade..im about to turn 21 now and they still continue to blow my mind with every new song. I hope that their music will live on whenever they decide to stop making it. They have changed my life and I will forever be greatful.

Thom is a true artist in a world full of manufactured celebrities. It's great to see someone with talent, depth, and intelligence. He's got a wonderfully quiet charisma that I enjoy. Just seems like a stand up guy in a world of phonies.
Even if he is arrogant to some people, he's really intelligent and shouldn't have to explain himself to anyone. The interviewer pressed on, annoying Yorke and thus causing the anger and cursing. He's probably gotten so many questions before like this one. He's a little on the introverted side, but he's a musician. Don't hold it against him as a whole. He's a very smart person and can't show his discomfort in any other way than being flat out angry. If he were nice, the interviewer wouldn't have taken him seriously and most likely would've kept prying.

If you listen to Radiohead's music you understand that each individual in this band has very good reasons for doing what they do, saying what they say, acting how they act. As the front man, all this is amplified tenfold for Thom. Try to trust that the man who helped bring us some of the most powerful, meaningful, inspirational music in the last twenty years is coming from a reasonable place when he declines to answer a particular line of questioning.

One thing I really respect about Radiohead is the lack of drama and celeb gossip surrounding them. With a frontman handling interview questions like this, which are designed to spark that kind of drama and gossip, its easy to see why the band is able to just get on with making music without all that extra faffery weighing them down.

i used to be exactly the same, i couldn't understand what all the fuss was about, but over the last couple of years they have crept into my heart.

At the end of the day I love how the interview does actually give insight on who he is as a person, more of a private and mysterious guy than a people pleaser. The lighting and framing choices are pretty horrible though damn

Such an amazing mind. He just doesn't want to give his opinion on such trivial matters, and he is very wise in stating how the only real thing that matters is that they managed to stay together and put another album out. If most artists took the time to see all the implications that answering that sort of questions bring, we'd still have plenty of real bands going on instead of solo artists drowning in their egos. I for one, admire this man.

Wow. I have a lot more respect for him now after seeing this. I like it when people are private about things and don't advertise their problems, because its their business and their's alone. "No one else's business." Good on you, Thom.
I can really relate to what Thom is saying about his contribution to the band's writing process. I am pretty good at starting things or providing a launchpad, but I need my compatriots to help flesh it out and bring their own things to it. I actually think that's one of the great things about making music as a team rather than solo. It's beautiful to see what is created when minds work together.

This makes me respect Thom even more. The interviewer was asking really dumb and overly personal questions to him, he didn’t want do answer, and he handled it very good. For example when he said: “can you imagine quitting radiohead and doing your own stuff? ” YOU DONT ASK THOSE KIND OF QUESTIONS. And Thom immediately saying “next question” is so brave of him. I love Thom with every cell of my body.
This interview was conducted after the release of Kid A and the band was in a really bad spot at the time. At this point Thom was very depressed and I think that's where he is coming from during the interview.

Thom is so moody. I realize now so many years after the fact how cool it was that he was so gentle and sweet toward us when we met him. He's not nice to everyone. As fans it's hard not to get curious about your idols' personal lives, I know now however how aggravating it is not to have basic privacy. It's so hard not to love Thom and Radiohead.
kudos to Thom for standing his ground. It's not our business to know the personal relationships between them.. they play for us, we listen , they appreciate us, we appreciate them. Simple.

I laughed the first time I saw this because he smiles when he's pissed. =] But he's smart... As much as Radiohead fans want to know their secrets it's smart of Thom to keep it personal... Unlike other musicians who simply tell the world everything there is to know... Good Thom. :)
Eh, it's kind from both sides to me. On the one hand, Radiohead puts out music that people buy and listen to. What they do is effectively a very public thing, so it seems natural that the band itself can be talked about in a public way. On the other hand, I imagine being in a very long term band is a lot like being in a marriage. Imagine if the interviewer was asking him how many times he's thought about leaving his girlfriend or something.

Radiohead is a very unique group of individual, and if you are going to interview any of them it seems like it should be a top priority to at least know a little bit about the band so as not to piss them off and drive them into seclusion... again! Thom is a strange genius and he deserves the interviewers respect. This came accross as an interviewer trying to push Thom's buttons to make for better TV ratings. I think Thom is uncompromisingly genuine and noble for sticking up for his bandmates.
