The word “trend” is the definition of in/out fashion, but nothing dies in fashion as people who wore it before the trend will carry on and people who don’t will be doing so once it comes back on trend. Just wear what you like and you won’t care.
I love wearing my 550's they're so comfy and nice and whose really gonna go to me and say dead trend outside LMAO
agreed. Once you stay out of the loop from consuming based on trends I think it will help people create their own timeless wardrobe. It's all subjective in the end.
So valid, stuff you genuinely like will stay liked regardless of trendyness
📠
I love my Birkenstocks and I did not know it was trendy. And they will get worn to death
I think generally using TikTok/Instagram as your guide for what’s trending is fundamentally flawed since those platforms are driven by artificial hype and trend cycles produced by brands. What people are wearing on streets and what they like is much different than what influencers are being paid to push on social media
100%. I almost never see people IRL wearing what TikTokers are wearing.
Agreed! I believe I only noticed 3 people wearing 550s in the span of a year and in 3 different cities. If something died then the folks making videos about them never really cared about the shoe or style, they were just following the hype.
@@ktroopa true but from a uk perspective I saw loads of 550s being brought about two years ago but now none really. Ofc it’s bias bc it’s my personal experience but with the fur top I literally never saw it apart from like twice on my for you page too tbh
i have seen one boston wearer and it was at the airport
big facts
i’m glad that 550s aren’t popular anymore, it means that i can buy them without hassle or spending $250
Exactly my thought 😂
While Birks aren't as popular anymore, I still feel like they are a timeless piece. They're like the Jordan 1s of slip-ons.
Facts, talk that shit. Timeless.
Agree , its classic menswear item like arizonas.
I just order some last week 😂
in Australia they have been in style from the start of time
Crocs are timeless, bostons are not.
The Boston’s will just shift from trendy to classic status like they were in pre-2020. They already had a solid user base before the social media hype which will allow them to remain relevant-just like the Arizona sandals. They’re in contrast to other trends that don’t have decades-long cultural relevancy to sustain them.
i agree!
I remember around 2012 the Bostons were becoming a staple in Japanese Americana menswear and probably has roots in menswear fashion from before then
Agreed. Also the silhouette of the Boston is just timeless in itself and Birkenstock is a well respected brand.
I think so too
😂😂
I'm not one that follows trends, and i recently became aware of the NB 550, and instantly fell in love with the silhouette! Ordered a white and green and can't wait to rock them!
You forgot that Converse and Vans are also sneakers that stand the test of time like the Jordan's. My belief is that when something like these silhouettes that just go with everything and basically interact with every person as something 'non-harmful' and normal they usually just appeal to the greater audience of people who just need a shoe to wear.
SO interesting when it comes to the birkenstock boston. I grew up, and have lived in oregon for my entire life. We have been wearing birkenstocks of all models since I was a kid. It felt so interesting to see them be so hyped, when to me, they were still that hippie shoe that my friends dad would wear.
This guy just trend cringe propaganda
Just bought the ald 550s in grey. I think they look dope, regardless of their lack of hype. They’re way less expensive too now that the hype has died.
i bought them too few months ago and honestly here in Italy I havent see them around a lot. Great sneakers imo even better if theyre not trendy
I’m looking forward to copping them since the price is lower well 😌
I don’t see how they can’t be considered timeless. Essentially the new balance equivalent of Air Force 1s, Adidas Superstars/Stan Smiths/Continenatals. Pretty standard sneaker shape.
mm gats is my go to i wear them in every colorway. They look sick in shorts/cargos/Wide fit jeans/High waisted pants. Casual/weddings/Formal occasions included.
@@jcdalrymple16 same i got a bunch of pairs and still put my fits on. Idc bout trends lol
The best part of wearing trends that died years ago is that you know they can't die again while you wear them
I find myself to be a very frugal person that wants to indulge in trends all the time. I consume trends like everybody else through social media, and have this gigantic urge to purchase popular items like the NB 550s, birks, etcetera. However, I never let myself buy these things for some reason, yet I still suffer for not swiping my card on it. I am always fighting with myself for being too frugal and not letting myself indulge. Then again trends come and go, so by the time I allow myself to spend money, birks and the NB550s are left in the past.
9:47 saying the 550 isn't timeless because it's essentially an 80s basketball shoe, right after saying the jordan 1s (a basketball shoe released in 1985) is a timeless shoe. lol
I feel brushed mohair is part of a wider trend for tactile and textured fabrics - and with all the crochet, cable knits, raffia, linen, borg, boucle, alpaca, casentino wool, faux fur, hairy suede, applique, quilting, embroidery, glitter, embossed leathers, 3D fabrics etc we're still seeing around, I don't think it's going away quite yet. I'm even wondering whether tartan mohair specifically will see a renaissance once we hit winter. EDIT: When something is everywhere, it's easy to call time on the trend and swing to the exact opposite... but the more I think about this, I'm wondering whether 'big texture' could end up being one of those broader themes that sticks around and defines the decade??
I won’t lie. I’ve had three 550s at one point but after time passed, I only have one left in my collection. The look down view wasn’t great.
I love 550s. I got like 2 550s (one that I wear to the gym) and a pair of 650s. Definitely lost its hype due to constant mentions and meh cws being released, but its pretty much evolved to a basic shoe (and that's a good thing for NB, in terms of profit). Its the closest alternative to white AF1s for me.
@@prod.bystanley I ve just coped an Aime leon dore 650 that i wanted for a 1+ year, I love the shoe but i wish i ve bought it earlier
*i pray every one watching this level up financially, physically, mentally and spiritually this year ! Lets get to work*
My favorite trend is something by New Balance.
Their collaborations with various brands and their fusion of classic designs are spectacular.
I just recently purchased a pair of M2002RM (i.e. mules) and I'm quite fond of them because they are comfortable as well.
Sure, 550 is already standing on the cliff of the trend, but I have a feeling that other products will continue to be loved in the future.
And I wanted to tell you that your videos with English subtitles have been a great content to improve my English listening skills! Thanks again for all your great videos and English subtitles✌️
love the video as usual drew, great insight on the oversaturation on certain products that causes a trend to die
This video was so well put together dude. Great insight on New Balance's hype with the 550 and collaboration. I never ended up getting a pair of 550's but came really close to it. Looking back now I am glad I didn't because I don't think they would go with what I wear now.
For current favorite trends, definitely looking forward to what does become more popular/gain more traction in the coming months, specifically i'm hoping looser fitting pants/jeans get more popular (so hyped for my naked and famous strong guy's).
Fashion trends are like art and that is something very subjective to a variety of different people. I appreciate the channel and the content you create peace ,love and positivity to everyone who watches the channel ✌️
I randomly found your channel and now im obsessed. your content is so great and different.
Thank you! Welcome to the channel!!
Sunday is meant for relaxing and watching a drew joiner video
i think regarding the topic of shoes with longevity that there are only so many shoes that have a interesting history to them. A lot of popular shoes these days just don't have the cultural impact of more classic shoes and cant stay around long enough to build one either(although i think it would be neat to hear about more "local Legend" type deals regarding certain shoes)
I have bought the 550 with first collab with ALD (Natural Green). Still own the 650s as well and absolutely love them up to this date. they are pretty basic, versatile and also have the nice vintage flair to them and also I don't want wear Nike Af1 anymore and they deliver a nice alternative, specially if you combine them with a more "grown up style ".
I personally still like the birkenstock boston and new balance 550, so them no longer being trendy is nice for me
I love the NB 550 silhouette. my issue with NB 550s were that the colors were always garishly saturated. Their whites were always optic white and not cream, their blacks always black, not charcoal. I exclusively buy a more muted color palette because my skin tone is muted; my clothes gotta match my skintone, my shoes gotta match my clothes. In the rare occurrence that I found NB 550s which fit the strict softer color scheme of my wardrobe, they were always sold out.
I’m surprised those Birkenstocks became trendy in the first place. I have the sandals the ones with the buckle and I’m convinced they go with everything 😂 but I never thought of them as trendy
I have recently bought some 550s and I absolutely love them, so if less people are trying to buy/resell them I won't complain.
#pvv I've started knitting/crocheting this past year but fully on board of maximalist colour combos!! Someone describes a lot bold colour combos as dopamine core and I think that's a perfect way to describe it. Like seeing a bright sun yellow, with a deep cerulean blue accented with various pinks just brings me so much joy and makes me feel like a walking grade school art class haha.
Also on the mohair, I'm very okay with it falling out of trend in the knitting community, its so pricey for a single ball of mohair so i will say mo-bye to mohair with no regrests
There are some trends that really bug me but there are some trends that I admire and so when I find out they’re dead/ dying I feel so happy to swoop in and get them 2nd hand for a good deal
"Gotta keep a birk on me at all times"
Drew 🤝 WLW
A true ally🫡🏳️🌈
“tiktok-ification” is a good term to describe what happens to items/memes/songs that blow up on tiktok. i love mohair cardigans but agree that they’re not as big as before. they’re still really good as statement pieces every once in a while. #pvv rn i’m really into bags. they can add such a mature and cool vibe to your fit. also reaching back into my skater roots and messing with flannels and big jeans again.
I think the entire reason Mohair was popular was that it was easy to produce synthetic versions for cheap at lower price points for consumers who are wanting accessible and affordable knitwear. I think this ties back to the popularity of knitwear over the past couple years.
I personally wouldn’t mind more denim videos even if it’s kinda niche
Coming soon!!
Still love my Birkenstock bostons! I also bought the dr marten Jorge mules which are similar to the Jill Saunders collab without the insane price point, and they’re great quality! I thrifted a mohair blend sweater this last winter but I don’t think I’ll be keeping it around. It’s not even that itchy but it sheds, and now that I work at a jewelry store I def don’t need that snagging on my necklaces lol
Birks will stay as timeless, they’ll just fall out of “style” like how Jordan 1 and chucks are timeless but go in and out of “style”
My gripe with mohair is that it sheds like crazy and then sometimes matts -- when its new, its beautiful, but wearing it practicaliity-wise, I feel like its harder to care for and wear for a longer period of time.
i'm throwing this out there: 550's are really great training shoes. They're really rigid, i like them for lifting and mixed workouts. I know they were balling shoes but honestly I like training in them more than my metcons
i get closer and closer to trend agnosticity every year and it feels so good. staying away from big socials ig has also really helped not poison my brain. i'm ready for the samba to die though, finding more niche cheap sneakers has always been something i've loved to do. all about wife respecters and wide pants deep rise with some trainers or clogs (i've been feeling the plasticanas hard) for the summer, hat on a rough hair day. also, sunglasses!!!!!
Truth be told I think that when we truly embrace our own style does it matter what’s in trend. I wear the same style and comfort clothes I’ve been wearing for over 10 plus years. Regardless if people like it our not I love it. Shouldn’t that simply be enough, where fashion + comfort + functionality reaches into our daily routine. To me that’s the quintessential fashion goal.
Birkenstocks defsss still alive, i just think they’re underrated.
crocs, graphic tees, are defss dead
birkenstocks are honestly timeless. i feel like they go with pretty much anything and they’re comfy.
Still like my 550/650’s. Samba the “it” shoe now but it’s too narrow for my foot. Plus, getting an all white or all black pair of 550’s now I think is the best move. They look clean. Currently, haven’t gotten anything trendy. I keep it very simple in the summer. T shirt, and workout shorts. If Johnny collar shirts are trendy I picked up some linen ones from COS recently
drew i'd love to know your thoughts on the dickies double knee loose fit pants, i just got some because i was inspired by your suggestion of the dickies 874s but wanted to try something a little different. this purchase was the most i've spent on a pair of pants; all of my pants are second hand tho so this is the first pair of new pants i've bought and i'm loving the fact that they fit my waist without a belt, it feels like a real luxury
4:38 "No-hair" was right there...
I love that I have the birks and a mohair sweater. To be fair I mainly use birks as a practical shoe and my acne mohair sweater I’ve owned for 4 years now, still love it (and is cold where I live) but the candy stripe of mine definitely means it’s not that timeless.
I think people should avoid trendy items but also wear stuff even after it stops trending. If you like it you like it and it becomes you.
drew is back!!!
I agree that the 550 has run its course due to the amount of releases by NB but still love mine and was one of the models that made me switch brands and found a community of NB-heads that are super cool.
It will always be a staple in my collection as it marked a notable change in my preferences as a sneaker enthusiast.
PS.. the side profile of the shoe still gets me every time.
Totally agree with you thanks for sharing love your videos ❤🙏👏🇬🇧
idk how in or out of trend the bostons are, the dior birk collab will forever be one of the coolest fashion link ups
The way sneakers come and go is wild. I feel like shoes used to be “in” for a year or two before, but now there’s like a 6 - 10 month cycle where everyone talks about it, then suddenly interest drops off a cliff.
#pvv I am going through this insane cardigan phase. I really love how you paired your CMIYGL tee with the brown. It really reminded me of how Tyler has been a huge influence in my cardigan craze. My mom never understood why he (Tyler) could be a style icon for me (as a woman) but I always beg her to get the grannies she works with to set up a crocheting/knitting tutorial for me. Cardigans feel like warm hugs honestly. I love the occasional compliment I get whenever I wear one too :)
Birk clogs don't go out of style those and 2 straps are iconic.
Birks never go out of style. They are always on trend. Too much of a long-standing cult following. Classics.
What Overshirt is this, looking really great with the stitching lines.
i looove that jacket. whered u get it from?
#pvv My favorite "trend" at the moment is men wearing jewelry. On one hand its not really a trend to me as I grew up seeing it all the time ( rappers, athletes, community members, etc) but the full-on embrace of it as the cherry on top of an outfit, I find amazing. Counter question, who you got in the playoffs Drew, who's making the finals and who's taking it all?
The problem with that it's if that jewelry has no meaning or back story behind, it's useless for a man to wear them.
@@marcop.525 says who?
Hey Drew! Speaking of the bostons, how are the Boston Bolds holding up? Have they developed a luster or a patina to them yet?
I wear mohair scarfs - they're pretty classic and add a bit of texture to a fit
I thought the FOG x Birkenstock collab was going to cause another rush for Bostons especially in the taupe colourway, but that didn't seem to happen. Here in the UK there are FOG x Birks sitting everywhere!
Also agree with your comments on the 550. And I think next year we will be saying the exact same thing about the Sambas! People just get sick of seeing them and then start to hate them.
Bostons are so comfy and convenient I’m still going to wear mine
11;35 yeah I first found out about the 550's before the pinnacle of its hype (the first ald collab) and I LOVED them just as a sneaker, I got them a year ago and they just stopped hitting the same because of how much I saw them on social media. It's sad because I love them but I also hate them now. My style has changed a bit and they don't fit as much in it, but I still love the actual shoe
what rack do you use for your hats/shoes in the background???
Now a days trends are not relevant as it used to be. Its more about how good you look not depending on is it trendy. I feel this way because so many small brands are on the rise and they have a different look.
I just ordered Berk Boston Dupes, so I'm late to the trend. I usually don't follow trends, but these finally grew on me.
The trend of Birkenstock boston might be over, but theyll forever remain a classic.
As for mohair, i didnt realise it was a trend, but i do have mohair yarn and planned to knit a top out of it 😂
.
I enjoyed this video, keep up the good work! =) Also,I like the CMIYGL T-shirt.
Wool garments are just a pain to deal with to keep clean and with patterns you'd probably have to make sure all the hairs align properly. Also to deal with wool itch, gotta line it with something or wear a shirt under. I assume mohair got popular cuz it gave texture to flatness. Imo it's like a fashion ghille/hunting suit and am waiting for the realtree 3d camo or something to become more mainstream lol.
where did you get that jacket it’s really cool
Love the brown shirt you’re wearing Drew! What brand is it from? 🔥
i will always have a soft spot for the 550s, I believe it is a timelesss silhouette. However, the GRs really killed it. Hopefully, with Teddy Santis heading NB he might be able to turn the 550s around which can achieve true timelesssness with the correct choices of materials, color combination and placements, and product positioning.
0:20 Or option three! Celebrate that all the cool items I want will flood the second hand market/ go on sale!
Honestly I feel like social media really skews how we see these trends bc I thought 550s had died and then started looking for them at school (being a senior in hs) and I'm realizing that people outside of instagram and tiktok are just now getting onto these trends and it reminds me hella of the internet explorer news memes idk. Then again my ex girlfriend just got a pair of duped Amazon birks so you're prob onto something w that. Also #pvv honestly I've started to just fall into my own little hole for fashion and it's a nasty blend of old money and streetwear but I'm loving it so we ball
Yesterday, I bought a pair of Birkenstock Bostons in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The shop owner told me that, however the high popularity of the Boston model, the new owner of the Birkenstock company, LVMH (owns Louis Vuitton) ceases to sell the Bostons in Europe. They will however sell it in the US and Asia, but for a much higher price than originally.
Maybe this could be a reason for the decline in popularity, simply because of a decline in availability.
I’ve been enjoying buying vintage runners and Oakley products as my style is sporty / y2k / gorp. There’s a number of euro vintage sellers that have a selection of 2000s NB, NIKE, etc.
dig your content! Mohair was very popular when I was a kid. it peaked about 1967 and I stopped wearing my chartreuse real mohair V-neck. Wow was it warm. but they will come back...
I bought my first pair of Boston’s in years (they were huge in my high school circa 2005-2007.) and I still love them but I actually am finding myself more drawn to the London model. Going to order a pair soon. They quite literally look like a moccasin version of the Boston. Weird that the silhouette didn’t catch on as much. Either way as new balance are my primary sneakers I love having birks as an option to throw on if I want to go a little more minimal. Some of my favorite outfits are the uber minimal ones.
Bostons’ will be forever in. Let the trend with the trend kids die though
PVV: I don’t really have any trends, but cargo pants I’ve worn forever but it’s cool to see them trending.
Comfort, sir, will NEVER be out of style. I will be rocking my Birks all 2023, 2024... And the dupes do not match the comfort and quality of authentic Birks. I tried it - I returned it.
I LOVE YOU DREW
#PVV I’m LOVING sleeveless vests as of lately. Super convenient with the spring/ summer and I’m finding a lot of cool fits I put together with them.
#pvv really enjoying accessories rn as summer is so hard to work with layering wise! Rings, necklaces and sunnies ftw
#pvv I love the clarks wallabees at the minute but everyone I've spoken to about them thinks their ugly lol, I think they make casual outfits look so much more put together and add a sense of formality to them which I love, I also LOVE all the different colours, defintely top of my wish list at the minute
I am happy the time of 550 is over. I love them and I like the fact that it is now seen as boring to wear so I can wear my high quality sneaker.
I also think TikTok and social media has shortened our attention span so much that we quickly get old of certain trends. Also that mohair joke outta pocket bro 😂
To respond to your question about why certain sneakers fall off so quickly while others like the Jordan 1 and 4 stay relevant, I think it comes down to which sneakers the sneakers community actually supports and think are cool. The New Balance 550s seem like more of a mainstream fashion trend that the casuals (people who don't follow sneakers or fashion all that much) caught on to. The same thing will happen to the Sambas to some degree. They'll have their peak and then decline which will leave true fans or people who play footy as the ones who keep wearing them past their trend peak. At least, that's my opinion, I may be wrong though:P
I don’t do trends I wear what I like which includes the birks and 550.
the color of the pants is lowkey majestic
#pvv the trends im most interested in are the return and styling of jorts (jean shorts) and how they have made a sudden return and have been revived in the fashion community, also i have been more into denim as well and learning about the different types and brands thanks to you drew. keep up the good work and content
Slowww
I bought the ALD 550s last year and right about a week later the trend died :D but i think the Jordan 1 silhouette is just epitome of sneakers it can never die.
Great points on the new balance 550, with TikTok killing the need for the shoe. On the other hand it is good thing for people who want to get a pair and can now get them without breaking the bank. Great review Drew !!
I would just like to say love the shirt. It's a great album and one of my favorites by Tyler
Tbh it can be super hard to find a pair of taupe birks, might be a challenge just to find
cant seem to find any suede birks from where i live. they may be dead but they look mad comfy
Love your t-shirt man! Can you please share the brand if you don't mind?
it’s merch from tyler the creator album titled the same thing
I will never stop wearing Bostons tbh- way too comfy and feeding into my gardening fantasies. They’ve been going strong for 4-5 years and i love em
#pvv leather shoes for sure. Derbies and boots are just my bread and butter. Also absolutely loving business core, I love how it’s timeless pieces, just styled trendy
i think I can answer the Jordan 1 and Jordan 4 timelessness question and rebuttal it with another example.
Chucks, Chuck freakin' Taylors man; they've always been in style no matter what. It's a classic silhouette you have other companies constantly trying to copy it (and they do) but nothing comes close to the original Converse.
Same thing with the Jordan 1's and 4's they're huge, they have a very distinct silhouette endless color options so the possibilities are endless.
The thing about these three shoes is that they're also versatile and tend to end up in a lot of Capsule Wardrobes because you can pretty much match Chucks, 1's and 4's with any outfit, even freakin' suits.
550’s died too quick, don’t blame NB for over saturating them
That's a fantastic jacket you're wearing - what brand is it from? :)
Where is your t-shirt and overshirt from?☺️
Drew, or anyone! Where is the jacket from? It's so good.
Severed circles
