I just ordered this plane from HH sale ... 99 bux total. A classic proven airplane for FPV. Thx for this great vid and info my friend.
Aero Mondo Flies great and very portable for fitting in the car. The flight times are up to about 20 minutes which is enough for me. If you are going for lang range then the MyTwinDream would be best. For $99 I don't think you can go wrong with this plane. The tricky part was mounting the motors, I used PVC pipe caps, but make sure the motors are slightly pitched down and aligned straight forward. Maybe put some straws on the ends of the motor shafts and align them that way as you glue the motor mounts in. I don't know the exact angle but just study the mounts that come with it then use the same angle. btw, the provided mounts are too weak for brushless motors and will snap off.
+dmerc00 Thank youfor the great info and response. HH should thank you haha. cheers my friend.
Great information Dave. Thanks for your knowledge and awesome channel.
Nice gift from Jon! I'm looking forward to following this build. Your Skywalker build helped me immensely with my own APM Skywalker.
Happy New Year fellas!
TheAdkFlyer10 Jon knows what I like. I am trying to decided on the flight controller. It's a toss-up between the Mini-APM and the Eagle Tree Vector 2 right now.
Hmmm, well we know how good the APM is. I've seen how nice the Vector is, as far as plug n play simplicity. It has a very nice colored HUD as well!
Lucky bugger lol! What a great Christmas present!
I've been taking a hard look at the Twin Star and think it's a great platform for FPV.
I'll be watching your build with interest!
Thumbs up and cheers!
Very nice plane you've got for christmas :)
I know a couple of people who really like this plane, hope they will see your video :)
Happy sunday
ABMNS PRODUCTION Thanks Cedric, maybe those people have some suggestions for the build.
***** What do you think about me using the Eagle Tree Vector 2 FC instead of an APM?
***** I was really surprised, i thought the APM was for you the best flight controller so far for any planes (i will use it for sure on my next plane build) but i know we will probably discover something interesting with your excellent reviews. The Vector seems to be a pretty nice FC too :)
ABMNS PRODUCTION The temptation is great, lol
An awesome Christmas present Dave!
Very clever use of PVC for the motor mount.
I sure look forward to seeing what you do with the model.
Thumbs up and cheers,
Bob
***** Thanks Bob. Looks like I need to order some more parts like props and servos but it will get done soon.
I love this plane for FPV: I used a Multiplex Easy Star II before this, and this plane has way more lift and a lot more room inside, and it's still small enough to fit in my car. I also have a Skywalker, but it is larger and more of a hassle, so I mostly use my Twin Star II for FPV flights. IMO, this is a great FPV platform.
+John Gaarsoe Kind of the same with me. I started with a Bixler that is just an Easy Star copy, in fact it came in an Easy Star box! After that I built the SkyWalker then moved to the Twin Star. They are all such fun.
dmerc00 yes I have vector . I put it on my fixed wing first worked great . Have since started a new quad and moved VECTOR to it but having some troubles , hope to get it straight soon . Vector worked great on my wing !!
That's good to know. I need to order one soon.
Looks good Dave. Glad to see you got the good motors for that. I would do the eagle tree fc. Looks simple to setup and not really that expensive. Good luck my friend :)
chris miller I have the Vector on order now because several of my viewers recommended it and I wanted to see how it compared to the the APM. So we will see how it is. This ought to be a fun build.
I think you will be pleased I had a few customers come into the shop and tell me how nice and easy to set up it was. I would like to get it for my tricopter. But to much on my list as it is.
chris miller I wish the hobby shops in my area would carry FPV stuff but they never do.
nice videos you have there:)
***** Thanks!
Great vid ! Waiting for part 2 :p
FullThrottle Should be available tomorrow.
Crash McQueen Same .. haha. Part 2 .. Part 2.
Aero Mondo There have been 10 parts to this build video series for a while.
Look at the playlist and you will see them.
I did see them .. thanks for such good insight. Your work is greatly appreciated Dave.
like it!
***** Thanks man!
The skymule from hobbyking has 3 blade counter rotating props you can order those for 3 bucks or so, if not any multirotor prop should do the trick for counter rotate, I would like to see you using the vector flight controller from eagle tree and then see you making the antenna tracker for it I haven't seen any videos of that build yet
Luis Fernando Suárez Harašić Thanks for the prop suggestion, I will check that out.
You are the second person who has suggested the Vector FC. No votes for other FCs yet.
The interesting factor of the vector is the eagleeyes compatibility for telemetry/diversity/antenna-tracker for less than $100 can't wait to see what you do
@Dave, I know this is an old thread but was hoping you could provide a link to an alternate motor setup? The listed below is no longer accessible.
I don't understand because the parts list is still in the video description.
Its exactly the same as mine, same motors / esc`s so I can highly recommend 7x5 APC props with a 4S 4000mah Zippy compact.
I get 22km range from it ( 11km out and back again ) with a cruise of 65 - 70 kph drawing 7 amps or a nice slow cruise of 35 kph using 3 amps.
The Mytwindream IMO is way too big for what you want. Its for lots more range and you don't seem to me to be really a range pilot.
Coyote FPV You have the same motors and ESCs?!
This is wonderful. I was trying to decide on the props and battery and it looks like you have saved me some time!
Yes I plan to only got 4km tops unless I get somewhere flatter. The mountains around my area are beautiful signal breakers.
Can you tell me more about your FPV video setup and what FC you are using?
***** Yeah sure
My FPV setup is a Mobius as my main flight camera, I have this going to a MyFlyDream Autopilot. Of all the Autopilots I have had its by far the best. That then feeds a RMRC 1.3ghz 400mW Vtx on one wing and a Boscam 5.8ghz Vtx on the other. The 5.8 is for testing equipment ranges and new antennas, passengers etc, the 1.3 is for me flying.
I use a Turnigy 5-7.5 amp UBEC for power for the servos. Its very low noise is great for the FPV kit.
I use a 3A DC-DC LM2596 for taking the 4S power down to 12v for the Autopilot and Vtx.
Coyote FPV Great information, thanks so much.
What LRS or RC receiver are you using to get such long range flights?
I`m using the JR module EZUHF with a 4 channel lite receiver. The Twinstar is capable of much more if you add another lipo with the same equipment I have on board.
One of the UK guys takes his out to 20km but I don`t want a battery strapped to the top so I`m going to use the Myflydream.
Coyote FPV Cool, the JR module EZUHF is exactly what I use on my Skywalker. Where did you place the EZUHF receiver?
***** fyi got my VECTOR issues straight . Eagle tree tech support was super fast response and help me get it right
It's great to know you had a good experience with Eagle Tree. I am looking forward to trying out the Vector. I have it on order now.
Hi, I am just about to take delivery of my twinstar, which will also be for FPV. I will be using the eagletree Vector flight controller. I ordered alloy motor mounts that simply screw onto the existing black plastic "tunnels" from gobrushless.com......
Good luck with the build.......
Hello and welcome aboard! I was thinking about the Vector as well where did you buy it? Yes those motor mounts look nice but I decided to diy them.
*****
I am in the UK, so ordered mine from rc-log.co.uk
friesianflyer Great and good luck on it. My unit is coming from GetFPV and I am looking forward to sharing the experience.
friesianflyer Hi .. I just got mine and I also plan on an FPV setup. Any suggestions? Thx man.
On your pvc plug. Did u custom cut that and glue on a cap of some kind. Or did it come in that length and with a cap? I don't see anything like it at the hardware store. Not even caps. just long 1 or 1.5" pipes say 15 feet.
theskyisthelimit Correction. I did find one. It had an octogon or hex shaped cap. It's about 1.25 long and in diameter. I guess I can trim it to round
+theskyisthelimit They had both the hex shape and the round shape at the Lowe's hardware near us. Hex will do fine though. Doesn't have to be round.
+dmerc00 Yeah i found the right one and shaved it.. problem is when i took out the old sled black mounts, they took a lot of foam.. now i have at least one nacelle that is really thin.. maybe .25" thin.. debating if i should take foam from the old canopy and make it thicker, assuming that will hold.. or some other technique.. and the black sled mount was slightly longer than this 1.25" long pvc pipe segment.. without "padding" it, there is easily .25" all around it.. so the question is what padding to use i guess foam carved (static.rcgroups.net/forums/attachments/1/4/2/1/7/8/a8399331-89-pvcpipe.JPG is the pic). I actually ended up switching from sk3 2822's to d2830-11's, 2.5x the power at 210 watts each instead of 80, should give me 27ish amps on take off.
+theskyisthelimit What RCG thread are you posting this too?
Any build videos?
+dmerc00 That was from the main TS2 thread on RC Groups here www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=380793&page=691 I have a main TS2 fpv upgrade build log at fpvlab.com/forums/showthread.php?40497-Twinstar-II-FPV-Build-Log-1-3ghz-UHF-Vector-Goggles-and-more-Input-welcome However, ill have actual build videos when i can get time to compile them all on flight-stew.com.. i've got tons of video to piece together.. Btw the new D2830-11's with 9x5 kicked my amps to around 23 on takeoff, not quite the 27 i had hoped for but close (20 on the motors combined), flew pretty well, aside from the fact i made an idiot mistake and forgot to attach the TX antenna and made an emergency landing clipping a tree and back flipping to the ground (all was ok) :) (i have video of this, not uploaded yet)
The mounts are made for an inrunner so why use outrunners?
The stock mounts are made for brushed motors and are very flimsy as a result. Brushless motors have so much torque they would no doubt brake those mounts.
First forget that inch-ruler. The Aircraft won't fly!
Vector!
Chris Riccio The Vector 2 FC does look attractive. Thanks for watching.
I think youre having some issues with the metric system :-) 1400mm
Im going to start my Twinstar FPV build soon, so I'll definitely be watching your build first.
I bought these to mount the BL motors. Alu motor mounts.

Are you going to use CA or Silicon glue to glue the fuselage halfs ?
S Rob Thanks for the link, I have seen those before and just thought it still required the plastic parts from the kit so I went with the PVC pipe fittings for more strength.
I will use the Silicon to glue the halves. I did that on my Bixler and it worked great. Gives you time to move things around before it sets too. If you get something wrong with CA there is no time to change your mind.
I was thinking eagle tree vector fc
tracy baker I may try it. The vector 2 looks very enticing. Do you have one?
