That upper bunk is incredible especially that it’s removable, what a great idea! LaPaz and her inspection music is the funniest thing ever, you do such a fantastic job with that! You are so talented with your filming, questions and production, it really is so good!!!
thank you, Nena!
“Ocean man can you see through the wonder of amazement?” 😊
I love the cat inspector and theme music.
You might consider putting a hand hold bar above the top bunk such that the sleeper can grab hold of it to swing up into or down out of the bunk. After many years in the Navy, having such a hand hold makes a world of difference.
Grab handle can double as excellent wardrobe hanging as well!
That vertical wall on the underside of the upper bunk, you should cut cubby holes in it. there is decent storage behind it.
Duracell is already an amazing labyrinth for La Paz to explore but what remains to be seen is just how thrilled she is by exploring and showing y’all aspects of geometry connected by her mind in flow while sailing. She’s gonna have a blast surprising you with many ‘hidden’ turns of joy that she discovers. What a consummate Inspector she is!!!
What is that big collar she sometimes wears?
it has a bell (to warn off birds from being murderously inspected) and a little tracker that plays a tune if we lose her.
I'm really impressed with you two. I expect you will educate a lot of people in doing things both quietly and well. We need more people like you two in the world. Keep up the good work👍🏻
When designing and building the upper bunk inboard rail don't forget the shock loads that can occur in a seaway if the boat falls hard off a wave. Potentially much greater than the static load of a person sleeping.
why not do the top bunk like a canvas pipe cot then you dont have slats to hide
The removable bunk is a good plan. To keep the slats evenly spaced you can staple lengths of webbing, then they could be rolled up and stowed in the bulhead to the side of the hull, with a cover to keep it comfortable to roll against. I think the inspector's surprise inspections are a tough measure but important to see what else is going beyond the presented projects. As for the careful looking around and exploring, sometimes you just need to spend a bit longer evaluating things. Looking at the drawings is all very well.
I'm excited to see how you tackle that window thats almost level with upper bunk. Heck I'm excited to see everything. 😊 Loved seeing Inspector again. ❤
Take a good rest and keep motivated❤
Aagh, Ween, you said what I thought. I've seen the poster and I love that band.
I’m thinking a little Whitney Houston for lamination music.
Right when Matt starts pumping
“…AND IIIIIIIIIEEEIIIIIIII WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOUUUU!!!!!”
Ween! What a great band.
Beautiful job! I love the idea of being able to stow the upper bunk! Might be a challenge to figure it all out, but probably a worthwhile puzzle to solve.
Man! It is amazing how well you are able to cut biaxial mat fiberglass! Show us what scissors you use, how long they last, and cutting tips,
Yikes unscheduled inspections!!👍👍😯😯🐈🐈
Duracell is shaping up to be an amazing boat ,I’m enjoying the journey.😊
Editing critique: at exactly 6:47, you should have played some Ween. Other than that, the convertible bunk/handhold is very cool and an impressive design. Maybe the audience suggested it, but you really figured out how to do it. Looking forward to every episode.
Might want to check "IKEA's" Bed slats for $30 (twin Bed). Might want to add a raised wood trim to the shelf (about an 1 inch) so items don't roll off.
Hi guys, I like your idea. Just a thought regarding the hand holds on the bunks - Wouldn't it be best to cut out the hand holds after the lay up and bagging. You're gonna be covering the exposed foam of the cut outs anyway and this way the vacuum wont distort the hand holds.
Hi Mike, because the hand holds have to be routed out it was a lot easier to cut the hand holds out beforehand to make them perfect given the shape of the beam, but my mistake in laminating just the handholds first screwed it up.
Love it! The bunks are kind of like a futon - multipurpose/multiuse. You could strap/lace the slats together like a Jacob's Ladder, ala IKEA beds. Ours have survived 2 major moves!
yes that's exactly what i want to do
That removable bunk is a luverly bit of design well done really enjoy your work.
Total Boat pumping with Fluffy Crossing the Road with some DJ-ing by cat ~ The Inspector
we could get REAL crazy with it! lol
Love the bunk design, You will never have to worry about condensation under the cushions
pump up the jam
or... pump it up
@@tobiaslindblom2187 Haha, I was thinking Push It, but these are better.
Great inspector of the boat. Hope that it helps😅
Excellence in crafting
Very interesting to see you design and build it..and I think the removability of the upper bunk is a smart and usefull step.🎉
Hej hopp !!
Another very clear and succinct video, and very well /filmed by The Lady..... A for the inner/upper bunk, the narrow flat next to the hull, maybe a low wooden list, so the persons things, like watch, snuff, etc, does not fall on the person while the boat maybe are moving....Just a immediate reflection from a frosty Karlstad,Sweden with minus five celsius and five cm snow.....Allda bestest from mikke...;-D
Cozy laminating nights……. Oh my, she’s a keeper.
i love the idea of heavy metal laminations!
Nice to get out of the cold. ❄❄❄❄ great update 2x👍
Thanks Allan!
love both of yr minds, like wow guys.. truely inspiring xx
The good news is that even if you never sail Duracell, you still have a future as a go-to guy. Probably locally, regionally and nationally. Can you smile for your clients?
As usual another nice video with detailed graphics to explain..
It all comes across as of you did this project before or is it the never ending learning that makes you work so smooth with fiberglass..
Nice job Matt and Jenni..
Thanks, Frans!
Pump station music
" Oh pump it up you got to pump it up" 😂
like many projects i watch and even do myself - the initial ideas seem somewhat easy when thought out - then the real thinking has to happen with much of the detail half way through the project - lastly comes the finishing off which i love as its the final step and very motivating to crack on and complete - first stage takes forever, middle stage seems to really drag on and suddenly how did the last stage not take any time - your both doing a cracking job, as an old race boat, the transformation will be magical and make such a wonderful fast home
CA glue is supposed to go on one surface and the activator is supposed to go on the opposite surface, before you put them together.
Definitely a purrfessional
yes!!
Man, nobody loves those surprise inspections! Gotta be on your toes.
Are you planning on adding cubby access into the void spaces where those bunks are?
I was wondering the same.
yes!
Maybe the top bunk mattress could be fastened plywood instead of slats, and then a book hinge on the hull side. You could remove the stringer and the bunk would fold down to form the couch back for the lower bunk!
Without a doubt best boat build on CZcams!
Love the vid and the 'inspector' is back!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Pump it up! By Elvis Costello, that’s a banging tune to pump resin!
Great video guys.
Theme song for pumping resin could be "pump it up" from Danzel 😂
Would suggest that you make the upper bunk solid. Guest using lower bunk will likely use upper bunk for storage. Also had hold needs to be sold when in place. Keep up the good work .
Great progress being done. It is good to see. Make sure to take times for yourselves so you do not burn-out, it can sneak-up on you.
Cheers,
Those bunks look so complicated to build and yet Matt you once again give a master class in precision building! They look robust enough by design but what about how the boat flex's off waves or load bearing from a heavy fall off during sea passages? Anyhow, sending good energy to you both and La Paz, who seems busy these days ;)) Best Neil ☘😊
Hi Neil, I anticipate the boat being pretty stiff. Might flex a little, but I think the bunks will be good. Sending good energy back at you!
Super cool. That is one cute kitty you have.
As a professional building inspector... I don't know what I am doing either haha
Hi guys, well your cell is coming along well. Good to see the inspectors come in and checking up making sure you’re doing a good job. Keep up the good work. Love your Videos Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺🧑🏾🦽
Great video this video went by in what felt like five minutes which is a sign of a brilliant video
Interesting question, end of lamination phase. So many different demands at that point.
Nice idea to make the top bunk removable.
Great episode! Stay safe and keep rolling Duracell crew!👍👍
Sailing Yaba has a dog Callou who does the same sort of thing as your cat, has his nose in everything. Their inspector. LOL
Cat is determined to become part of _The Itchy & Scratchy Show!_
Great ideas, coming together... Great video you guys.
Great design of that upper bunk!!
Very well put together video!
Looking really good...
Pump pump pump it up luda chris comes to mind while pumping appoxy
A couple of rare earth magnets would keep those bunk sides stowed together when not in use. They are also used to keep model airplanes together.
that's a good idea
Very interesting
Thanks for the video 😁😁👍
Duracell is my favourite project of all projects!
I’m curious are you still weighing what’s coming out and going into the boat?
roughly, yes!
Do you draw out rough plans before you start building or can lay it out in your mind and go from there? Your skills are amazing.
yes, i draw on paper and sometimes CAD first
Incrível a qualidade e paciência de seu trabalho. Eu construí um 35 pés em 6 anos. Foi incrível, mas você está superando.
10:40 Man ponders bunk
In regards to the inboard rail. I would have assembled the components, done the layup, vac bagged, trimmed and routed out the hand helds then, if required, done a small layup on the inside of the hand helds.
I was wondering if your going to have any wood work and furniture in the boat? Wood trim around the doors and on draws ? Let us know a little of your future ideas in more detail! -please !
yes, we will definitely have wood trim inside.
Well it’s Wednesday and your team I assume and my team are meeting up here in Dallas on Thursday. May the best team win! Enjoy the game.
COVER IT WITH GAS AND SET IT ON FIYAH! Although Pumpin' For The Man would be more appropriate. I knew there was a reason I loved this channel! Just joined patreon, keep up the good work!!
Thank you!!
She's looking good. Gate job. I love what you done with the top bunk. Very well planed & clever use of space. Keep up the good work. SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand 👍🏿
“Gate” job or great job?
@@teeanahera8949 ah yeah, that'll be a great job haha.
Could you make the top bunk like a roller blind, canvas base? It would do away with a bulky mattress and the need to store the slats 👍
Matt, I have been dreaming of some cool ideas as the work continues. My computer skills are limited so I will try to explain. The area of the wall below the settee where the inside is the 1/4 berth and the exteriors open to the walkway. Where you mentioned to put sliding vents. For airflow.
The Idea: Since the area is 72" by aprox 24" using large graphic script print cut out the letters maybe 10" or more.
This is the "vent" or Screen door! Then create a screen out of narrow thin strips of graphite on a 90 degree. Then rotate to 45 degrees for artistic effect, then fiberglass to the interior of the 1/4 berth. Of course one side could be Duracell, the other.... the builder/designeer...or you and your wife's name, or upper moms name.
that would be a nice touch! thanks for the suggestion
Pump it Up by Elvis Costello
She's a PURRRfessional 🐈
yes!!
I'm not sure about using carbon on the beam over the E glass, since they have completely different properties. Carbon being much stiffer will carry all the load until the fibers begin to break, then the E glass would come into play. There may be some situations where there might be a reason to use carbon with E glass, but in this case I don't thing so, but it may be so overbuilt that it won't mater.
You could stretch tough fabric between the two upper bunk stringers - then you wouldn't need slats.
Huzzah!!
Why not make some cutouts in the support for the upper bunk so the space under the shelf could be used for storage? If there is one thing I’ve learned from being on boats there is never enough storage.
Maybe you could use a self inflating mattress for the top bunk. They are very comfortable. When not in use they roll up very small.
AND if the boat sinks you would be all set with a personal life raft.
Cyanoacrylate is the same thing as super glue. The activator is simply water. That's why it cures instantly on skin, and that was its original purpose: to quickly close wounds in the Vietnam War. It was originally intended as an airplane glue (for large airplanes), but it was too brittle for that.
Yeppers, its the chemical name for Super/Krazy Glue. The accelerator is a bit more complex than just water so you have to be carefully with it since it can curdle some finishes and mar some plastics. Acetone and toluene are common ingredients in the accelerators.
Best!
“I’m a Purrfesional Inspector!” 🐈
You should figure out where you are going to stow your emergency rudder also. Maybe it could stow just below a bunk or something.
Already 1K+ LIKES, 5,315th tag-along view about to set sail... from my desktop helm, that is.
Bunk edge-beam strength test: how about a 200+ lb man sitting in the middle of the span? Will it hold at the most-critical point?
it should!
"There will be inspections, when I say there will be inspections," says the Inspector. Can the bunk slats be stowed with the mattress and be part of the couch back? Or have you figured out a spot for them already? Don't forget the work life/balance. Thanks for the episode.
maybe! I think that would be pretty cool if I could figure that out
Epoxy pumping should be accompanied by sea shanties, surely?!
Fiberglass work looks satisfying and easy if you are good at measuring and templates. But it must be challenging to get the work done before it cures. That would be my challenge.
Try cutting the cloth sometime, especially the biaxial stuff. It unravels quickly and disastrously! Matt is making it look deceptively easy, but my experience doing fiberglass work has been frustrating.
Maybe handholds on the top wing of the L beam would be more useful or both!?
Could the slats be stowed inside the new outboard fairing, via a vertical door within the side? A rib of sorts could be formed inside to hold the slats in place, accessed via a hinged door within the vertical part. That could be along the narrower head end. Also the empty space inside towards the foot end could be used for stowage of personal items whether or not the top bunk is in use.
maybe!
Great job! You are probably beyond this point but intuitively I feel like the upper bunk outer rail should have carbon fiber in the y axis much like the web of a wide flange beam. But...I am sure you have weight tested things. thanks for sharing all of your content. Cheers, go watch some more football!
Faster ist good 🎉
the upper bunk outer wall us begging for cubbies to house lower bunk stuff
Hi, fantastic work. How are you deciding on when to bag. I assume Carbon always gets bagged. Perhaps the upper bunk could be a fabric instead of slatted ?
I bag most projects that are not taping. Fabric would be nice and easy to roll up and store, but I want better back support.
@@TheDuracellProject that all makes sense. It was great to see you working with Evan, I met him, Diane and there brand new baby in Annapolis waaay back. Please say so Hello to him, from Simon Slater next time you chat with him.
Cheers
Good times 🎉 when you use the epoxy pump it like your milking a cow🎉
just like that!
With the complete reconstruction of pretty much everything except the hull and the addition of all new rigging, do you ever worry that the boat weight might not be perfectly balanced fore/aft and might sit bow up or bow down a bit?
We have a "several cases of wine" trimming ballast program already in progress. More seriously - look at many long distance cruising boats; they sit bow or stern down depending on payload distribution. We will get it close and design the new keel to suit the boat.
what Evan said!
Personally, I'm not sure about the stow away feature of the upper bunk.
It will not be easy without scratching the wall fore and aft.
Secondly, in bad weather you need a very secure way to fixate it because it has to serve as a secure handhold.
