I went vintage shopping with the queen of antiques, Brittany (owner of Badlands Vintage). I’ve been friends with Brittany for awhile and even purchased some pieces from her, like my 1000 lb dining table! She took me around to some of her favorite shops in the LA area and I found some amazing pieces for my new home. Come along with me for the ride and let’s shop!!

Because you're in L.A, you're definitely being taken for a ride. Those prices are beyond outrageous. If you want antiques at a reasonable price, you need to get outside of the major cities, even into thrift stores in small towns where family members off load their deceased family member's belongings but have no idea what they're tossing out. I do almost all of my antique shopping in little towns, at small stores. I won't go near a major city for thrifting and antiquing. Also, those types of trips can be loads of fun, especially if you take a good friend and make a weekend of it at a little B&B in a quaint area you've never been before. It's not just about the shopping--it's about the entire Experience. Finding that little diner with the best food, seeing an historical site you never knew you'd love that much, the drive and the company. Happy antiquing! (but be Thrifty and don't waste your money lol)

Drew, have you been to your local government planning commission to see if they have plans for your home on file? They may have information about the builder, and that may lead you to books about your particular style of home. There are many styles that evolved from Spanish Revival and your home being built in 1929 leans Art Deco in some respects like the rounded corners of the hall with the stained glass skylight. It has characteristics of Mission Revival with the beamed ceiling upstairs.

I'm the child of two antiquers and have thousands of hours spent in attics, barns, estate sales, garage sales, shops, & even "trash pickin'"* forays. The excitement is palpable.
    * trash pickin' was a fun past time in the midwest the night before trash pickup. Everyone would put the good stuff off to the side so neighbors could pick through it easily. Whole families would walk the neighborhood and almost always found something worth picking up.

I love the fact that you bought an old home for its character, and want to bring some of that back into the frankly awful job the previous owners did with the bathrooms. Thrifting is such a mish mash of things, it’s really all about the hunt, and it’s rarely antiques (which I believe by definition are things that are 100 years or older). Antique and vintage shops have done the hunting for you, so there’s definitely that cost built into the piece.

Had assignments related to historic districts before I retired. There are a high number of ways to get those antiques and architectural features for less…. if you’re willing to do the work. First recommendation is to look out for demos and remodels of older homes/buildings and get in there to more carefully remove what is being trashed or sold at a very low price. Another recommendation is to get involved with the Los Angeles Conservancy. They have a wealth of information and many fun ways to be involved and learn. Third recommendation in restoration is play the long game. Those doorknobs don’t all have to be replaced all at once. Replace as you can. Who knows… some demo project you find will dump more than you need. As some of the commenters say and you well know, the fun is in the hunt, exploring, and finding the just right piece. Have fun!

He rewired and refinished everything beautifully! I also found an antique clawfoot tub that I had completely redone. I found incredible claw feet… all four the same which is difficult to find. I had the feet refurbished and dipped and nickel. I found an old pedestal sink I had completely refurbished and installed. When I sold the home the couple that bought it removed every light fixture, yanked out the clawfoot tub and sink and put in all ultra modern boring junk😖 good for you Drew to keep as close to the architecture as you can… Your home will have so much more character! It's devastating that they ripped out all those classic pieces. The old couple I bought my house from chose us because we're not landlords or developers and because I said I'd be keeping as many classic features as possible. Sadly we did lose some chair-rails due to having to have the entire hallway replastered but my taste is really old fashioned. Like museum level old. I love that eclectic mix of styles through history. I'm trying to do eccentric victorian millionaire style on a thrift shop budget. It's actually working pretty well though. It's amazing what people throw away because it's not the new in thing.

This means that they were quality items to stand the test of time and still are mostly. It was fantastic to see you expand your horizons at the antique shops and salvage, your reaction was much like XOMcKenna!🤤😍 You will never shop the same way again even if thrift/estate sales are more your budget. The way quality things feel and look in your hands will be your new point of reference! Have fun but mind your budget, it's easy to justify the purchases until the roof leeks! (Speaking from experience) 🤑😕

Love your energy and great to see how excited you are to restore your new home. I restored an older home and my challenge was to not get sucked in by all the wonderful things I saw, but to remain true to the era of house (and then added modern touches for modern living). And that would be my advice for you too. Can't wait to see what you do!

I’d love to see Drew do a “how to” video on how to go antiquing. It’s one thing to fall in love with a piece to the point that you cannot live without it. Okay, but just purchasing antiques because they are old.… Why?
Before buying you need to know why. And then you need an education so you don’t get taken for a ride. You should have a good idea of typical prices, which manufactures/craftsmen/designers are good, signs of authenticity, etc. It’s a long list.
But you don’t have to learn the hard way by mucking it up to begin with. You really can gain an education in a type/style of antiques fairly easily.

Great antique shops. On Sunday, August 21 is the Long Beach flea market. Here’s the tip lots of these vendors are at the Rose Bowl but raise their prices because of the location. Always go early too, but some will lower prices at closing because they don’t want to pack it up or are on their way to go picking and want a lot of from for more new stuff.

P.S.A. Antiques are more expensive/pricier because most of the time they are 1- made better than how it would have been made at a "fast furniture" for lack of a better term store and 2- they're definitely unique and if they've lasted this long they are sure to last you much longer as long as you treat them with care, and if they have up-keep stick with it.

Same with other things also! You are going to have so much fun with this house!
