“Saucer eyes” and “big heads”.
I guess she’s never seen anime chibi styled characters or played a JRPG before this game?
dosent make it any less weird looking?
Erlisch Well, keep in mind that the original version had big headed sprites (as did many older JRPG’s), so it stands to reason the remake would keep that aesthetic.
It's not Very Good Reminds me of Fable Anniversary next to Fable the lost chapters
I plan to get it anyway because i love Seiken Densetsu as a series
But that art is ehhhh also they missed the chance to make it Online Multiplayer and that REALLY makes me sad
Zsnes could make Online Multiplayer >.>
samuraigundam0079 It looks great on the SNES with that sprite base character design. However, it looks awful on the PS4 with polygons.
samuraigundam0079 Yeah, but the aesthetic was used very often simply because the SNES couldn't handle more realistic looking graphics and such, Final Fantasy on the SNES and other Square RPGs had the same art style, but when Final Fantasy moved to Sony consoles they started to make their characters a little less anime lime because the technology allowed for more realistic dimensions on their limbs, even though there is still a lot of fantasy maintained as it should be, they look more realistic, lot of programmers had to do it in order to fit something in a huge game with a lot going on, like RPGs of that era, compared to side scrollers that had way less scenario graphics and so, they had all the space in memory and in the carts to fit bigger, more realistic-looking characters.
I want a Chrono Trigger remake. Not a remaster, a full remake.
Even though I'm usually against rehashes, I would prefer an HD remaster instead of a remake. Chrono Trigger is already such an amazing game (top 5 JRPG in my opinion) that quire frankly I'm scared they'd mess it up by making drastic changes,
Michael Jacobs if it is anything lile this please no
I’d prefer if Sony allows us to re-play Chrono Trigger from the PS4’s PSN store. I have my DS cartridge still but sadly no DS.
They should have included it on the SNES classic, but yeah the DS version is the definitive version of that game. And if they are making something like this, i prefer to just play that version again, it has aged like fine wine.
I'm on the fence. I wouldn't mind it if a lot more time and effort were put into it - especially compared to this. I was stoked for the SoM remaster but now seeing it in its released form, not so much. CT definitely doesn't need a remake though - unless it got a treatment like Shadow of the Colossus did.
I remember renting the original game from blockbuster and playing with friends. Not too many console rpgs had co-op play mechanics back in the day. It also had some great music.
They better do a Chrono Trigger remake in the style of Octopath Traveler. That would be amazing.
YES YES YES
How about a remake that has a 3D and 2D mode like Dragon Quest 11 on Switch?
Yeeeeeeees!!!!
YES
They really better don't haste on choosing which artstyle (and engine) exactly they gonna use to implement such great achievement.
Played the snes version again from beginning to end.
Then tried the remake.
I was skeptical at first but it really doesn't disappoint!
It's just insanely easy compared to the snes since you can melee stunlock enemies non stop in the remake.
Besides that really enjoying it.
just finished the game, I enjoyed it. I liked the extra dialog they had at the inns and being able to quickly change weapons. My only gripe is I felt the remake was allot easier than the SNES version.
What console is it on please!
@@spreadthevegemite8064
PC.
it's a *REMAKE* not a remaster
Crystian Corona well it's an awful remake if you compare it to the effort done in Shadow of the colossus
Concelhaut looks like a great remake for this style of game honestly.
Kevin Strom absolutely, it looks incredible compare with the original.
The game are missing some very important lightning effects that is why the environment looks very pale.
I will say that I like the art for the characters but the environments are bland looking and don't bring the vibe the original has
"QUICK SOMEONE THINK OF THE ABSOLUTE MOST RANDOM NUMBER!"
"uh...7.6?"
7.6 is bad when it comes to IGN, its like getting 5 on other reviewer outlets
76%. It’s not really that difficult to understand, is it? Are round numbers all kids nowadays can deal with?
Remaster? It's a full on remake. Jeez.
No?
Everything is the same, except the graphics and some fluff, like voiceacting and some additional dialogues in inns.
If this were a remake, all the missing content would likely be in there, or other noteworthy changes to either story or gameplay.
This is essentially a Remaster.
Gonna wait on a sale. I've cut back from buying certain new games on day 1 a bit.
Agreed. Lesson learn from FFXV
Phong Ngo Lol, I was going to say the exact same thing until I saw your repply 😁
Spot on 😊👍
Yep, XV. Or every EA game. Haha
Ya know I go and say this and then give in and actually buy it lol but I like it. I found out a local GS had a physical copy so I got it. Last one to. Otherwise I would've waited for a sale on the digital copy.
idk what you're talkin about, i think the character models look great. the way you describe them makes it sound like you've never seen chibi/anime art style before lol. however i do think it looks weird that the mouths dont move, especially for that angry lookin kid lol
Also, yeah they are kids
You're kidding right? They look like they've been ripped straight out of the PS2 era. Plus they didn't even bother to animate their faces.
I think she meant their design doesn't make much sense for that type of game, since most of the time you see their heads and not their weapons and arms, with is very weird for a action rpg.
But also, the super blocky animations don't help either. I think I would prefer a remaster with lots of filters for the original spritework (like the megaman collections) than a 3d remaster with below average animation.
It feels like you know more than the reviewer, which is very less likely.
How you guys have 15.2M subscribers astounds me.
I can't wait to play this after playing through the original so many times.
Is there a reason the magic system wasn't mentioned? Or that you can level up your weapons and such? I feel like a good chunk of the game play was left out while complaining about big eyes in a JRPG. I'm confused..
I'll wait till it's $20
or just get SNES version which is far superior
support this remake version becomes top selling of SE games if you want secret of mana 2 remake happens in the future.
I dont think it will take long to happen.
I get it when it's $10 :)
kyotheman69 it's 80 dollars so no
Can't wait I've picking up my physical copy, memories all over again seiken densetsu series still much love.
The 34 year old me is definitely buying this for the 10 year old me!
same
Why don't any of you just, you know, by the same game that 10-year-old actually played and enjoyed?
By npurchasing the remake, you just show how low your standards are while not doing justice to what game you actually enjoyed back in the day.
@@ericcartman7420 whatsup cartman
@@ericcartman7420 because its damn near impossible and probably crazy expensive to find secret of mana for snes.
@@Chaosintejas512 emulating snes is ez
I got this on steam and whenever i play it it opens for 2 seconds and closes itself what can i do to fix that.
I loved the story as a kid. Can't wait to replay this gem.
There is no HD remaster of Secret of Mana. There is a remake called "Secret of Mana". I'm kind of puzzled how a gaming journalist can't even get basic facts right.
@Doin it
That's... what it is. Yes.
IGN:MAKES ME WANT A TRUE REMAKE
Trials of mana on switch : hold my beer.
Yea....no.
@@stonecold5373 yea. .yeaahhHhh!
Feels like most reviews from IGN are rushed reviews w/lil to no investment to whatever game they review.
This reviewer sounds like a kindergarten teacher teaching us how to brush our teeth -_-
Reviewer isn't aware it's a remake not a remaster.
Thoremac if it is a remake why does it look like a ps2 game
It doesnt.
Thoremac is right, though. Remake is basically something that was redone from scratch. Remaster is something you can describe as "enhanced port" - a game that is still based on the original source code, but with better textures, framerate, gameplay improvements, etc. Secret of Mana may look dated, but is still a remake that was done from the ground up.
I think a remaster would of been nicer, fix the dialog redo all the sprite(and background) work using 1080p(or even 4k wouldn't be any harder) and it would of been much better for it
Thoremac Says something about the quality of this remake lol
Was this made using a public game engine? I'd love to make a game with similar design.
This isn't a remaster at all...it is in fact a remake. Lol, the reviewer. Doesn't really matter I suppose since the game still flopped hard everywhere.
Um, in the scene where the sprite is just running nowhere the sprite is being controlled by a player but you imply it was done via the computer.
they missed a huge opportunity to do a hand-drawn 2D remake. would've been amazing.
Is this available via download or disc? Where do I go if I'd like to buy it?
Georgie this is you 3 years in the future. You can buy it both ways, YW.
The ice country is simply beautiful to look at in this update
How the hell are the character models weird? Youve clearly never seen anything from Japan.
Because Japan character models are weird.
Dylan Salinas I've seen (and love) a lot of japanese design, but even I have to admit that these look a bit off.
She's part of IGN's anime podcast...
I think they look off too.
Does this mean that if I've seen a Picasso painting the 2nd one is not going to be weird because Ive already seen one? Man you really need to rethink your logic.
Picked this up yesterday. The simple gameplay and bright graphics is really refreshing.
I'm gonna wait till it's on sale.
It's like someone ripped the soul out of SoM and made a crappy mobile phone version
Was the person reviewing this even born when the first one came out ?
arsenewenger30 She is reading from a script.
I hate to say it, but the reviewer clearly has never played the original, any other game in this series, or seen anything from Japan ever in her life.
shes clearly not in to jrpgs
believe it or not, she's INTO JRPG, but sadly, she's the worst reviewer on IGN imo. She's that kind of person who said "I'm sorry, I'm a Pokemon fan so I don't think it's right to..blah blah" when asked about whether or not she watched Digimon. Plus, this unproportionate character artstyle is NOT new, if she played some of the DS Final Fantasy or some less known JRPG games. I shrugs my head when she said that, and all that nitpicky stuff.
She's actually IGN's JRPG expert. She played a ton of Japanese games. I agree 100% with her. The art direction is awful sorry
Its A a female and B with ign so most likely never played any games before and is in it for the easy money
cirescythe ...what? Are you 12?
Well, I'll judge it myself after playing but 7.6 ain't too bad.
I played it. It's pretty bad.
I love this game. It's my first introduction to the Mana series and I love this art style. It reminds me of the DS remakes of Final Fantasy 3 and 4 which I also love. And very much looking forward to the Trials of Mana Switch Release.
I recently purchased this and played through without any crashes. Could be a year's worth of patches has addressed those issues.
As to the sudden difficulty spike - I never encountered it. Both this remake and the original make it fairly easy to just run around enemies and avoid encounters. If you always do that though you won't level up and so the fights you do have to take will become extremely difficult to impossible.
If you take your time, keeping spells and weapons on all characters at maximum level through grinding you'll be of a level to breeze through the game with no real difficulty. SoM has always been that way.
That said, the grinding can be obnoxious. Sitting and casting the same darn spell over and over is very obnoxious - there's a reason modern games don't do this. But you can only change so much about SoM before it's no longer the same game. This remake changes about as much that can be changed while remaining recognizable to veterans or the original.
So will secret of mana 3 be HD soon?
Another journalist complaining abut difficulty. Difficulty is not a negative. GET GUD SCRUB.
JYDeAlberto spell good correctly first mate
Russ Mawson that s the meme dude
A balanced difficulty is nice but when games get hard out of nowhere like they took Viagra we have a bit of an issue lol. Dark souls is awesome tho
Colin Gamagami The original had the same spikes.
JYDeAlberto Complaining about difficulty is fair when it’s not contrived. Wolfenstein 2 for example has ludicrous difficulty spikes in an otherwise easy game. Cup head is tough, but it’s never the games fault if you die. You have to balance difficulty, that’s what she mean by ‘uneven’.
How is it 20 hours? The first game was like 60 or more if I remember right.
Can you still overwhelm enemies by spamming magic on them like the original?
I was really looking forward to the remake when I first heard about it. Then I heard the voices. So glad my parents let me take the super nintendo when I moved out.
This game needs to be remade in the same way Seiken Densetsu 3 was with Trials of Mana. Secret of Evermore also needs the same treatment. They could take my money now.
Okay, so what's the difference between a remaster and a remake again? I am puzzled.
is this game have connection with dawn of mana ?
i like that they havent changed gameplay they probably would of made it all wrong if they had cant wait to play this
I'm assuming it's local multiplayer only
"AI isn't very smart" yet clearly shows that player 2 is the one getting stuck
Rob Cotto Bro.....it's IGN.
Rob Cotto they.... They did not just do that........
They used it as footage. Obviously she has a reason to say it.
Meghan Sullivan it is really annoying as I played the original so many times, 😁 though I wondered if it may be not as common in the remake that there was a need to display it as shown in the video (with player 2 I mean). No complains about the video, it's good.
MR Eroned yeah im not sure if shes the one that edits the video or just writes the review. American reality tv is the worst culprit of patchwork editing
This should have been a 9.99 mobile game
Is it coming to switch does anyone know
But the character models look exactly like the clay ones that were shown in the SNES instruction manual...
This is the only argument I'll actually accept towards the art style
Still they should have brought it in with modern Anime art styles
Should I get this version or the SNES original?
Bruce Wayne SNES
Any is fine, whichever you like the most. I'd go with this one as the old one has some dialogue issues, being an old game and all that.
Rob Cotto is the dialogue "people die when they are killed" bad?
C_Cole 96 not THAT bad, but there are some inconsistencies, like, most of what characters talk in the game are displayed in a single window per "sentence", but there are some instances where 2 characters do in one window, I dunno if it's just me but I find it annoying
Rob Cotto I finally got some cheap games for snes today, but there's a slight problem the visuals come out in black and white. I really want some classics for it but since I'm having issues with it I'll just consider getting this for the PS4
I actually really appreciate you mentioning the idea of mom and dad playing co-op with their kids.
Yes it's weird that the mouths don't move, but why are you bashing the character model design? I think the design looks great.
thevenin26 they just feel entitled to having a semi realistic artstyle and models in the same vain as other $60 remakes.
What looks great here? Sorry, but the characters look like toddlers.
+IAN no one is saying this needs realistic artstyle at all?
You guys really need to review The Legend of Heroes - Trails of Cold Steel Series, the second one just released on PC and could have used some exposure.
It would have been great to have the original on the 3ds with spell selection and inventory on the bottom screen so you wouldn't have to deal with the ring menu.
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW THEY ARE WERID?!
sunsbookishgamesx fr wtf 😂🤔🤔
its a shtty remake
There's nothing weird about it. It's a style. People are douchebags.
I'm pretty sure that the characters head in the original is a lot more bigger than in the remake, and when they got slightly shrunk compared to the original they call it weird......
This reviewer doesn't seem to get the Japanese style of character. Graphics could've been a bit better for sure, but hey. She gave it so much flack, it sounded like it was getting a 4-5/10!!
What platform
I don't really mind the slight oddness of the character models but the mouths not moving when speaking? I expect that from Nintendo Wii U, not PS4.
Wow, is THAT what the icy trees look like? I know their color-shifting was necessarily synchronized on the SNES, but in 3D it just looks ... off.
You've obviously never played a JRPG before if you think it's late game is supposed to be easy.
Kids these days are spoilt. If they can't kill the boss in 1 or 2 hits, its way too hard. Back in my day, there were not FAQs, easy mode or autosave. If you died and didn't save, that's on you. Any wonder Dark souls is so popular. Because its freaking hard!
Bahamuttiamat ok, calm down grandpa
You can listen to the classic music that's a huge plus
Think I’ll just wait for NI No Kuni 2 for my next jrpg adventure
I wish Square-Enix did a similar style remake for Chrono Trigger on PS4, too. This Secret of Mana remake is close enough to perfect. I love it so damn much.
Can you turn the voices off?
One of the best reviewers I have heard. Thanks for the parent and child part of the review. I love playing with my kids and this is something I will check out!
I would love a Legend of Mana sequel.
An diorama style
i dont think its fair to comment abt the graphics of games, especially if they are true to their own style. each game has their own style, moreover if theyre JRPGs with anime-ish or chibi-style graphics. it shows how little these reviewers know. but thats not really anything new. article writers/reviewers, of not only games, but sports, news, etc, most of them dont know what theyre talking abt.
Yeah when I saw their mouths not moving, that bugged me...I mean if you can remake it with such lovely graphics and animation, you can animate their lips too
The only thing I truly hope for is that they kept the National Scar easter egg.
The game has been completely remade, it's not just an hd remaster. The reviewer says this makes them want a full remake, which is what this is lol
I bet they were aiming to match the art style they updated the first game of the series with. Adventures of Mana isn't as complicated, but it has very similar style, gameplay, and mechanics. I wonder if they'll bother updating the third in the series AND localizing it finally. Then maybe after that, we could get a remaster of Legend of Mana.
I played this game to DEATH with a friend of mine. Back in the day when localisation was good. I remember the tree summon having a Bavarian accent. lol
the question is... is the beastman still here? i enjoyed him the most
Should’ve preorder one 😩
Support this if you want Sony to hear you out on potential remakes instead of having them waste their time.
We can see a potential Vagrant Story, Threads of Fate or Parasite eve 1 and 2 HD remasters.
So I should just play the original on my SNES Classic?
Yes
The character models match the style of the original, Chrono Trigger, and tons of anime. I hope she wasn't expecting the characters to look realistic.
As for the difficulty, my friends and I beat the original game when we were in elementary school. Though frustrating at times, the overall difficulty is not as hard as say FFVI.
I’ll wait Until There Make A Option To Mute The Voices
Did they fire the mouth animation person? Even FFIV DS made an attempt.
This is a remaster, not a remake. That's why the difficulty spike and enemy AI are relatively unchanged.
This is literally what I actually want from the FF7 remake. Cartoony, traditional, lighthearted Square Soft graphics. Advent Children graphics will spoil the soul of the game. After the Enix merger it felt like they just slowly lost their way. I don't even think they want to make games anymore.
FF7 was also huge departure from sprite graphics. Many actually complained about it back then if I remember correctly but it worked. FF7's story is not light hearted and more realistic graphics could work better. In the end it's all who and how the game is designed.
Yeah, but cloud dresses in a silk dress. Id put money on that not making the cut. It was also the first 3d game in mainline FF series. IMO 4 and 6 were more serious (I would say 5 but you just cant suplex a train), more of the time. It had a TON of comic relief, every year when I replay it, it reminds me how lighthearted it really is. Escaping a bunch of helicopters on a bike and a 3 wheeled pickup? snowboarding down a mountain and collecting balloons along the way? The 2 hours in the gold saucer? Yuffie as a character, with her recruitment and the Wutai sidequest? They have a hidden attic full of cats in Wutai. The chocobo shop in mideal? The story feels deep and heavy in retrospect or in a wiki entry but when you're in it, you spend less serious time than you remember. imo that's why the game is so perfect. It deals with heavy topics like climate change, eco terrorism, kidnapping, self sacrifice, etc but the game never brings you down emotionally. It's like listening to an up beat death cab for cutie song vs a radiohead song.
My point is that graphical change is not the issue. In fact, graphic was never the issue with square. It was the one aspect of the series that was consistently praised for. Core story arc in FF7's is dark with it's imminent doom plot. Aside from the light hearted side quests you've mentioned majority of story has depressing theme. It's modern settings could benefit from realistic graphics also. But like I've said, it's who and how the game is designed. Developing landscape has changed for Square and dedicated talents behind previous titles are not there, so I won't expect Square to recreate the same experience regardless of the graphical changes.
Kyle spoil the soul of the game? It's not a happy go lucky romp through the world, it's got some adult themes in it. Make the graphics as realistic as possible.
Kyle I said this a couple of times before...they should start focusing on movies, their CGI movies are so godamn good.
Advent Children was absolutely awesome, Kingsglaive was...damn that movie was so good that it made me absolutely hate crybaby Noctis. Nyx should have been the protagonist in FFXV.
They should just let the Final Fantasy games die and make movies of it instead.
Wow can’t believe the mouths don’t move. That’s a bummer. Changed my mind because of that, it just takes you right out of the moment
Cannot wait to play this on the PSVR.
Nice review. Will be buying this for psvita
Awesome review keep it up.
_The heroes' large heads..._
Yeah, I know, *very* uncharacteristic for a Japanese video game.
What is she even talking about? Has she been living under a rock?
They couldn’t make the mouths move when talking?
only 20 hours? hmmm
How can one play Secret of Mana without the original soundtrack of Hiroki Kikuta? I mean, it's seen as one of the best gaming soundtracks ever created but in this video it gets only mentioned one short time. Without the original music SoM is only half the game.
I'm glad the AI still does that! did you try and switch characters? It seems she missed out on the point of the game mechanics being intact and feel like 1993 was the WHOLE idea behind this game
I liked it and this is coming from someone who loved the original, honestly my favorite game from my childhood aside from FF6. The voices were annoying at first, but I got accustomed to them. I liked the little skits that occur between the characters when you stay at an inn, since in the original there was hardly any dialogue between the trio unless the story called for it. My only complaints would be that the AI of my party members is really lacking since they won't attack an enemy unless i attack one first, also it seems like 60% of my physical attacks miss their target. I know the original had this accuracy RNG, but it's really noticeably bad in this remake. I don't know why people are bashing this game so much, it's not like they were going to do a version with FFXV graphics.
Also the lady doing the video doesn't seem to know what she's talking about. No offense.
Aww it looks friggin adorable
Easily a game I'd buy for $20 and I've never played the original before. It's nice to play a gem I missed.
I still think it would have been better to just give us a localized version of the trilogy that already came out for the Switch.
I would've bought that in a heartbeat. This, not so much.
What I wouldn't give for a localized, bug-fixed and rebalanced Seiken Densetsu 3.
Will probably never get the rebalance though, but I guess I'd be willing to settle for the first two.
I think this remake is fantastic. I don't know what this review writer is talking about. The game didn't need changing to begin with, and the "difficulty spike" isn't a problem if you played rpgs before. One thing I personally didn't like was the remade soundtrack, I played most of the game with the original track. You know... aside from the crashes
Looks like a mobile game, the original looked way better IMO
true
This is better. Original for old school gamers who still like to play 8/16 bit games.
Remake version need support if you all want the sequel, secret of mana 2 remake.
Cocksuckaroo please learn to spell, looking at that hurt
This awful remake won't get my support and if there is no SoM 2 remake, it's maybe better.
Brianstorm are you smoking crack?? This game looks awesome wtf
Did people really have a hard time with the difficulty in late game? As long as you’re keeping your weapons and spells at their appropriate level you won’t really have too hard a time. If anything, I found the mid game harder than the end game. By the end your magic is so laughably powerful that you can basically steamroll everything.
