    Please, if you don't have a multimeter get one before going forward. You may not need one but the last thing you want is to get in the middle of this repair and not understand what wires are what. I will even help you use it if you email me. This guy above is around $10 from Amazon and may save your life or at least a lot of frustration.

    Can I install Blades on the ground before installing motor up?

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  Před 10 měsíci +2

      It depends on the model. On this one, technically no. To be more accurate, I believe you can install all but maybe 2 blades on the floor and then just install those when you get it mounted. If you install all of them on the floor you can't angle the fan to hang it.

    Good instructional video. The only thing that would make the video better would be deleting all the negative comments about your son. He did a great job! You’re lucky he even wants to work with you after you publicly humiliated him with your unnecessary derogatory remarks! Even if your comments were made in jest, they can still hurt and discourage!

    Thank you for the video. I used it as a reference to go along with the manufacturer’s instructions, and everything was a cinch. I was replacing an old fan because the light kit became inoperative. My light kit was originally tied in with a wall switch, and the fan was hot at all times. I basically matched the old wiring to the new one. I had two hot wires (red) tied into the fan hot (black), another single hot wire (orange) tied into the light kit hot (blue) and two neutral wires (white) tied into the fan’s neutral (white). My home was not wired with a ground, so I simply tied off the ground wire to the fan. It works exactly as planned. I leave the chain for the light kit always on, and control the light with a wall switch. The fan is controlled by the chain switch. I had my one son helping me with the job, and just like you, I was busting his balls the entire time. He’s a good kid and very mechanically inclined like his old man. These people giving you crap need to chill out. They obviously don’t have a sense of humor.

    I got this exact fan and your video was a big help. Even with that your son was light speed ahead of me even using the video as a guide.
    This fan was put up in my patio and I live in Florida so there is a lot of moisture.
    On most fans adjusting the blades is simple. With this one, it's a pain in the neck and you have to remove the light kit.
    Before I attached the light kit I turned back on the power and tested out the fan which was making a lot of noise. It looked like the blades were grinding on the motor so I had to slightly loosen each blade. I spent 3 hours and got to the point where there was no grinding sound for the low and medium speeds, but still present for the high speed. This fan on medium is faster than the rest of my fans in the house on high speed so I just threw in the towel and thought that was good enough for me.
    Sorry but I haven't read every comment so this may have been posted before. At around 21:35 the globe is attached with only the bowl cap and finial. However, these two parts are just decorative. The hex nut was not removed before putting up the globe. The hex nut should be removed. Then put up the globe, secure with the hex nut followed by the bowl cap and finial.
    The fan looks much better than the rusted-out 30-year-old fan that was up previously. This is the 5th fan I put up in my life and definitely the most difficult. Making adjustments will be a much bigger pain in the neck than the other fans in my house. Your video made a hard job a little easier.

    Hi Clint, I found your video while trying to find instructions for adding a wall plug wire to a ceiling fan. I understand that is not what you are doing here, but noticed you offered help. So, here is my dilemma: I rent a room from an elderly woman. In this room when I moved in was a ceiling fan that didnt work. This fan was a regular ceiling fan, that was wired to a cord ( like a lamp) and plugged into wall plug. Her son, who only has one leg, who installed this fan, said he would repair it. So I took it down off ceiling. He opened it up, and wiring was all melted, so they went to Home Depot, and purchased a new Hunter fan. With lights too. They also bought a new cord and plug to put together with new fan. So, the cord they bought has two wires in a decorative goldish plastic coating. No white, black, green wires, Only two wires in there like a regular cord for an old lamp at grandmas house? And the plug, has no ground on it, only two prongs. I think this may have been the problem in the first place with the melted wiring in the first fan?! I am worried her son doesn't know what hes doing, and will ruin another fan, and possibly start a fire in my room!! So do you have any thoughts?? Shouldnt the cord contain a blue, black and green wire?

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  Před 5 lety

      What they bought is called lamp cord and it only has 2 conductors in it like you see. It is not appropriate for this task. Depending on how long you need it, you can buy premade cords at Lowes or Home Depot that have bare wires on the end for this purpose. But definitely don't use that cord. You could make it work, but I don't recommend it. Since you have to pull on metal chains and such for a ceiling fan, I would want at least a 2 wire cord plus ground.

    Mine had 10 machine screws to be taken out from the bottom of the motor. If you go by the manual you will mount the fan and then take the screws out upside down from a rotating housing. haha So make sure you take out these ten before you hang.
    I got 8 out and spent 4 hours trying to get 2 out. You cannot get your drill and drill bit close enough to unscrew. I am going back to Lowes for an extension.
    The 10 machine screws would have been so much easier to take out on my lap. You have to fit an exact angle with your screwdriver to apply any torque. The screws are not deeply seeded so the notches require a perfect fit. I tried all 20 of my Phillips screwdrivers and even 3 flatheads on those two problem screws, They must have driven those two in with a machine.
    If the extension does not work I will have to go through hell twice (taking it all apart and starting over)but once I have the motor on my lap I know I will get those two problem screws out.

    Thank you for this helpful video. With your help, I DID MY FIRST ELECTRICAL WORK! YAY!
    I did try my suggestion, assembling it all before lifting it up. Even with certain difficulties, I suspect that it was easier than the manual or (sorry) this video. My notes:
    (1) I first took down an older version of the Lansing type. If the set screws are tight, it turns out that they CAN take the weight of the whole thing. EDIT: but like the video says, never rely on them or on the wires holding it up!
    (2) Regardless of how you put it together, you should consider a magnetized screwdriver. Believe me, it's a pain in the tuchis when you drop a screw into the case -- but at least if you're assembling on the floor, you can shake it and all to get it out again, more easily than if it's hanging.
    (3) A problem: if you do full pre-assembly, how do you set it down on something? The down rod stuff and the light kit are designed for being hung, not to rest the whole weight of the assembly on it. I put it together on my lap (there's that natural gap, after all), and then set it down carefully in the gaps of the styrofoam in the box, and it didn't break. I think it would be better to set the body upside down on a table or something, attach the fans, attach the light kit (without the glass shades or the bulbs). Then turn it right-side up and carefully rest it on your lap or on the styrofoam (or something thick and soft) to attach the down rod, canopy, and yoke cover. Then hang it. Then wire it, attach the canopy to the bracket. Then attach the glass shades and the light bulbs. (Or instead hang it before attaching the light kit -- that kit may be fragile.)
    (4) The guy in this video hung it in seconds. It took me about a minute to get the ball into the bracket, and my arms got really tired. I think my problem is that I'm a klutz, and also I didn't plan a good cleared way to get it in. Make sure the ladder is back a bit so you're leaning forward stably. Move all the wires out of the way. Go up a step on the ladder if needed to look at it easier or have less lifting. Lift it with your strong arm and use your other hand to guide it in.
    (5) The blades did not get in the way of hanging it -- I didn't notice any tilt. They DID get in the way a LITTLE bit while wiring it and attaching the canopy. But it wasn't a problem: I nudged the blades out of the way with my hand or with my head if needed. Since the circuit breaker and power switch are off, that shouldn't be a safety issue. And I could stick my head between the blades, or reach thru, all I needed to.

    Clint, this was a great video, we bought 3 fans, all 3 Lansings, 2 brown and 1 chrome. We put the chrome on up first, and absolutely no wobble when the fan is going. But the second one, we have some wobble when the fan is on all speeds. We put it together just like the first one and so we are wondering what we might have done wrong, or could do to correct it, before we install the 3rd one. Thank you!

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  Před 4 lety

      Good question. My first recommendation is to make sure all the blades and blade holders are tight. If so, you just have a fan that is out of balance. Most hardware stores actually sell balancing kits which include little weights you can put on the blades to stop it. I doubt you have the problem with the 3rd fan as it's pretty rare today.

    Installed this fan before I saw this video. Saying the blade mounting procedure "sucks" is a gross understatement. Have put up many such fans over the years and never had such a difficult time with the fan blade attachment. Lousy design. Plan to take the other two I purchased back to Lowes.

    I used the instructions alon with your video for my fan installation. I had red, white, black up in my ceiling. Connected them per your instructions. The light came on but the fan did not. So, I rewired it according to the instructions. White on white, green on bare copper and black and blue on black. Threw the switch, but nothing happened. I'm now scratching my head.

    • @MPERIALENTERTAINMENTD
      @MPERIALENTERTAINMENTD Před 4 lety +1

      @@ClintHolland There is one switch on the wall. Behind the switch is a mess of wires, both black and white, but only one red. It also appears that the switch in the living room is connected with a panel of switches in the kitchen. It is confusing. I decided to hire a Lowe's professional installer to come out and finish the work. I also learned the blue box in the ceiling won't support the fan. So, my simple install turned into a cluster. Lol, sigh, I tried.
