C.E.C. TL1 CD Transport - heavily modified. But is it a good thing?

  • This unit has been in storage for a long time and I was going to just replace belts and maybe do a servo tweak, if it weren't going to work well straight after that.
But to make it go, I had to manually "encourage" the turntable to actually spin. It appears that the spindle either needs to be re-lubed, or it is simply worn out, after being made to labour under heavier than designed for puck.
Maybe it is just grease, because it does get better after some use. On the other hand, it is not a first C.E.C. that I worked on and they never needed spindle re-lubing.
    We will see.

Re: 5:20 - well, Lukasz developed a bunch of mods for CEC transports - and he did end up building DACs from scratch, quite successfully. In other words, mods and modders are not always bad. Engineers for these types of companies have to design to a price point, and almost always make compromises in parts quality (given the typical 5x markup). The TL-0 uses a sh!tty Sanyo stock board that is the type you would find on sub $300 players, doesn't even use Oscons (really disappointing), etc. So there really are improvements that can be made by modifying, but you have to be smart about it and know what you are doing.
I do agree with the mechanic v. engineer comment on these mods - looks like it might have been Audiocom-uk.

I do agree that mods are not always misguided. Łukasz indeed built business on mods and he became known for fitting tube stages to CD players. However having gained all that expertise, he went on to make DACs and amps. He has never made a single CD player or Transport and modding them is where he supposedly excelled at. Why is it so if he knew so much?
Would fitting Os-cons really improve sound of CEC TL-0? This is very debatable. Os-cons are made by Sanyo and so is TL-0. They could have had them at factory cost. If they knew how to make a transport that half of the audiophile World is salivating when just looking at, don't you think they didn't try to improve upon the electronics in it? They did a really serious power supply yet they thought that their boom-box servo was good enough. Maybe then it simply does not matter what servo it has and what capacitors are in it. Maybe they do know what matters and what does not. Cost surely was not a consideration. It used to cost $20,000+ in Australia.

i would rather have sony's direct drive like the 557 . 227 . etc ...which i own works perfect

it was engineered as it should and some idiots adding weight like the factory would not think of that

Can you share the diameter and thickness of the motor belt?

I don't know that now. I normally do not keep records and old belts when I get them are very deteriorated and often non original anyway.

On the other hand, many accomplished designs have been tainted by unscrupulous accounting practices and where that is the case, a bit of TLC can work wonders.

Accountants indeed might be a problem sometimes, but these TL0 & TL1 Transports don't appear to be affected by them. They have a boombox servo, average laser mech and PSU and lavish boxes. All at a premium price. The puck surely was good enough and making it heavier wouldn't have added anything to the price

@@hear-net-au Absolutely, it's never the case with premium, top tier models, where barely any expense was spared. This one has been effectively butchered! Someone read too many audiophile magazines and not enough engineering books.
