I remember the Datsuns of the seventies, you couldn't kill them. They rotted out but wouldn't die.
My Datsun PU had all kinds of electrical issues and was so gutless I had to get a running start to get over a hill. My replacement Datsun PU in the 80's had a major engine failure just out of warranty. Haven't bought Nissan since.
It's true old type Datsun 120y, 160j, 200L were excellent series.
Present ones I have not experienced,

In the 1990s Nissan was going bankrupt yet made high quality, well engineered cars. After the Alliance they became financially stable and sales were way up but now made subpar, unreliable products. Go figure.

Actually the Honda designed automatic transmission was extremely reliable in the older lighter weight cars until the late 1990s, it was the extra weight and V6 engine that caused issues with the formerly good design.
Ramez ,Never owned a Honda but friends and family have no complaints from any but none ever owned a Honda Van. Those things are money pits and transmissions from Hell. Nissan did produce very reliable and quality automobiles back in the day but after Renault took over they are pure SHIT now ! Right down in the sewer with FIAT another joke to the world. A nightmare for anyone owning these rolling buckets of pure SHIT ! Anyone dumb enough to by one of these Socialist Communist Government Backed Shit Producing cars deserves the screwing they get. I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima from new still going strong, best car I have ever had.

Mr Bean ,Did save the company but at the cost of reliably and quality. Very sad Nissan was allowed to ever get in such a state. I would buy a Frontier Pick-Up with the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder but nothing else.

I have a 2011 Nissan Quest SL, 3.5L V6 and it has 480,000KM (Airport Shuttling) and the biggest thing that ever went wrong was the A/C lines which costed $600, I’ve always kept up with maintenance and it’s very reliable. Though Nissan doesn’t have the name of “reliability”, it does have its gems still.

I don't buy Nissans, but I have all the respect in the world for Mr Ghosn. Dude took an old company, falling apart in every way, filled with traditional Japanese types, and made it turn a profit in just 1 year. That's is insane speed!
Try to buy one and you would love it, here in Saudi where dessert is like an ocean. Nissan is preferred by many Saudis because of quality, durability and also value for money. GTR CARS are absolutely for the millennials and innovation will transform nissan into a generation of high-tech cars.
Closing down factories & laying off staff will do that! The greatest obstacle to Nissan pre-Ghosn day was the reluctance of japanese managers to do these.

It’s pretty easy to do when u make cars that are suppose to be reliable even more stylish and cheaper only to later find out that that you got cars put together from the lowest bidder with the lowest quality shared by a brand of the lowest quality - Renault. Like Carlos said, he wanted to make “PROFITABLE” cars.

Older Nissan's are better than new ones, nissan Cima FY33, Cefiro A31, N14 GTIR, S13, S14 and S15 Silvia, DR30 RS Turbo to r34 GTR Skylines and more.
Those are all low income sports cars, they are not big money makers for the company.

what consumer trend created the JUKE, this design really does make my head turn, every time I see one I have to look away.Japanese cars at this time all seem to share the same sharp edged design language with hard creases and funky highlights, describing all the current models in as few words as possible " Angry Toasters " says it best.
The Juke was desisned by Americans in America in the State of California. That's who Renault the French Shit Car Company that controls Nissan and has since 2000. When Renault bought a controlling interest in Nissan and drove Nissan srt8 into the sewers of France along with the reliability and quality that was once but no more associated with Nissan. The Juke is awesome. I'll admit when I first saw it I didn't like it but they are really light and have a great little engine that loves boost. There's 3 decent designs after 2000 the GTR, 350/370z and the juke. All the rest are garbage now and reliability has taken a huge hit.

True the juke designer's art score is a big fat 0. Nissan needs to make cars like they used to, something that set your heart on fire that u can drive everyday by everyday people. It used to have the march super turbo, pulsar GTI-R (Silvia's SR20 motor and Skyline GTR 4WD) and VZR-N1, datsun 510 (infiniti q50's granddaddy), silvia sisters aka s chassis cars, sentra se-r (ok, nowadays it has juke's MR16 turbo but not so much oomph as at least a civic or a mazda 3), laurel series, and more. Now either the mainstream models are dull to be honest (i had a grand livina during MS, the suspension is a bliss, ok for daily basis but not really amped most people) and the ones that make Nissan as a brand cool is way too expensive for some people or unavailable. 370Z is way too long in the tooth with puny changes since 08, n the GT-R is waiting 4 replacement but still better case than the Z with changes here n there, and the infiniti clan is fine (i liked the q60) but in its class its just dusted by lexus n the panzer triplets (bimmers, mercs, audis) by sales....even its French cousin Renault has more spark n spice (Nissan misses hot hatches, entry level sportscars, sporty sedan to keep up with AMG, and anything that make people's hearts racing). COME ON NISSAN, MAKE A COMEBACK!!

Back on 2004 my uncle bought a Nissan Sentra and drove 49 states with no issues. Now Nissan's can't be trusted, radiator issues, transmissions, sensors, it's a money pit. Thanks Nissan.
I bought a 97 Sentra as used car in 2002 and drove it with little issues until 2011. It was a good car.

Besides that, most people who buy new cars get rid of them after 5-7 years regardless of how long they'll last afterwards, so 120k miles is good enough. Not that the newest transmissions and software are as bad as they used to be anyway, relative to other car companies' CVTs, just more expensive to replace when they die under the second or thirds owner, which the original owner is not going to care about.
Depreciation and reliability aren't as bad as Chrysler/Dodge, Chevy, Ford, Kia, or Mitsubishi, so that's good enough, and none of those brands except Mitsubishi have financing quite as liberal as Nissan. What else, exactly, would someone looking at a Rogue, Altima, or Sentra be able to get financed for new that wouldn't be even worse? If your credit score is 450, you have kids, and you absolutely refuse to buy used, you're getting a Rogue even if it had a tape deck and the body were made out of cardboard. Mediocrity is a niche that nobody is better at than Nissan.

The old late 80s Nissan Hardbody trucks with the inline 4 cylinder with 8 spark plugs was one of the best trucks ever made. Had one with a 5 spd stick and put 400,000 miles on it, then sold it.
When car shopping I always go to the NISSAN dealerships for comparison. But always comes out disappointed with lame quality, ergonomics, driving dynamics, values and price vs the competitions.
Very disappointed with a company with such a long automotive heritage.

They should create an entire new market for North America with micro, mini, or compact urban pickups and cargo vans.
Also a small light weight mini sport car about the size of the Miata but with a hardtop. As most part of North America were not always dry, warm, and sunny.
Right now all their full size pickups & SUVs were nothing but a huge failure. They can't compete with the existing mainstream players. The Tacoma has grown upward in size & price from the last decades. Only lame compact pickup truck in the North American market is the Ford Ranger.
Nissan has the heritage and expertise in small vehicles. They should capitalize on the opportunities.
My good friend had an Altima from the mid to late 90s. Great car. However the 2002 redesign put the Altima in a new category competing directly against the Camry. I really liked that redesign and Altimas still bear resemblance to it to this day.
Im convinced that the 90s were the peak for Japanese car reliability and longevity.

I grew up riding my father's nissan sunny. We also used to own a nissan frontier (D22), sold it because it's manual (traffic jam getting worse, need to have auto, ended up buying hilux auto). I hope nissan will survive and improve, I have so much memories with this brand.
Now that Nissan is ahead in battery and electric car production, they should use their Leaf electric components to diversify the available body styles. Like, for example, 2 door coupe, pickup, minivan (VW-like), commuters (Smart-like). Because the competition in electric cars is coming.
The only thing promised is sadly the Nissan IMx, an electric crossover based on the Leaf and even with that they are saying 2020. They also have a cheap EV for the Chinese market, based on the Leaf.
I agree that they need to realize that other automakers are becoming competitive, when it comes to EVs, especially the Korean Hyundai Group has shown that they can produce an affordable long range EV with only slow production holding them back from stealing a significant market share. The Tesla brand is not a competitor, as it will never get to a price point where they offer a decent EV costing the same as a Nissan Leaf.
Electric is a dead market right now. And everyone knows it, including major brands. They are pushing CUVs and trucks out like mad.
hybrid hydrogen turbo engines are the future not electric.
I own a Nissan Versa '08 & had Infinti Qx4 '99 & the Altima '05. never had issues !!! apart from normal maintenance !!!

I used to be a big fan of Nissan but sadly nearly all Nissan products now sold here in the UK are very closely related to Renault products. They have Renault engines and other parts. I strongly suspect this is the reason why models like the Qashqai have their issues and Nissan no longer sit at the top of reliability/satisfaction surveys with other Japanese manufacturers like they used to. The fact is they are only really Japanese cars by name. I realise there are some exceptions like the Infinity and GTR products but Nissan are to close to Renault in my opinion. I would not buy one of their vehicles but will continue to buy from their Japanese rivals instead.

I had a little very well used 1973 (?) Datsun 180b with 4 wheel independent suspension, ~1800cc engine in 1980 still tough as nails, their little p/u trucks were also known to be very tough and equal if not superior to Toyota or Honda but something strange seemed to happen when they changed the name to Nissan and everything started to crash. They are no longer the equal to Toyota or Honda or Mazda or even Mitsubishi. I am not sure that Renault is the company to bring back dependability to the brand. I do wish that I hadn't sold my little Bluebird though! What a car, I used to race at up to 85mph across Canada and US from Alberta to SW Ontario.
They got rid of the Xterra and turned the Pathfinder into a soccer mom SUV. Thanks but no thanks Nissan!

A good CVT is great. No smoother driving experience available. Have only drive Subaru and Ford CVT's though so can't speak for Nissan. You like shifts? Man up and get a manual transmission.

Had a note for a week. It was absolutely horrible. Interior consisted of a mish-mash of parts thrown together, terribly outdated, the gearbox felt dated and loose.

Nowadays renault's running just fine in my opinion but renaults dont sell as well as at least peugeots (i wanna compare it to another french so it's fair) at least in my home in indonesia, but peugeot got their fangs back just as soon as they released the mk2 3008.

my eldest sister used to drive a 2001 Exalta Sentra here in the Philippines. she loved it but she had to sell it because of the typhoon ondoy that happened in 2009. then she bought a 2015 Sylphy (Sentra), she immediately got rid of it because of the transmission. Nissan's reliability is not the best especially nowadays :(

Despite the merger & part ownership doesn't mean first hand success Ghosn, he is a visionary besides that he's team maker philosophy was a lesson that many companies to day follow! A couple of years ago we had a Nissan Altima as a rental car for two weeks. Liked it so much I bought a Honda Accord a couple of month later. The Nissan was bargain priced, the Accord was priced like an Accord. Nissan in the US is a second tier company.
I purchased 2001 Nissan Pathfinder 5 speed 4x4, Dec 2000. Had one major issue a tail shaft seal leak. Got it fixed and later a rear main leak which I am still monitoring. Gonna get it repaired as it is annoying with drops of oil on doggy training pad on garage floor. Other than that vehicle still running only part changed out so far is starter.
with this CVT transmission strategy, I'm sure they will nearly go bust again soon
Renault is Going Into the default along with Fiat the fake car of the world ..
I think the CVT is an attempt to get a little better gas mileage. Those transmissions are not traditional but yield better acceleration than other trans types. The engine does not sound the same when accelerating but the functionality is actually better.

Very Sad Renault bought Nissan. The Quality once expected with Nissan is long gone now. I bought a new Nissan Pick-Up in 1987 drove that truck over 500,000 miles before it engine blew up. Most reliable automobile I ever owned. Kept new tires and batteries on and in truck. Kept the oil changed along with oil filer changes at 3,000 to ,5,000 miles. It died in my driveway in March of 2010. Thats 23 years of very reliable transportatio. Since Renault bought Nissan the reliability is long gone now. If I were to buy a Nissan it would be a 2004 or 2005 Model before Renault ruined it.
Wingate, I did the same February 86 bought new hardbody 861/2 $7000 and still driving it haven't done anything major to engine over 400,000 when speedometer cable broke so not sure exactly what mileage is now, changed oil At 7000 miles since that what book stated no problems have so many want to buy it but it's family could never sell only thing that could depend on all these years

I have owned 3 of the Nissan harbodies, one a 2wd when I was in the military and two of the 4wd models, one of which is sitting in my driveway now with 225k on it and no issues at all. I purchased a Frontier a few years ago and sold it within 3 months, weakest truck I ever owned
Oh the dumb comments on here re Renault. Nissan is still independent and designs and engineers their own vehicles. Renault has NOTHING to do with Nissans quality and reliablity problems - they are all to do with Nissan. Renault is actually the most reliable of the European manufacturers and has been for over a decade and their cars are very popular here in the UK and Europe.
As seen in this video. All car manufacturers are still missing an important part. Millions of drivers still want a nice easy to drive sedan vehicle. The push to SUVs is pushing a large population out of the car market.
One thing I like about marketing cars.... you get to make some sick racing cars, thrash them round a track, and if you nail that it boosts sales. Deson't that sound fun?

Nissan CEO & team you need fresh products again. How about update that old 370 Z with better ergonomic and drivetrains. Keep it simple, high volume, and price it reasonable How about a smaller low weight reasonable price simple hard top sport car about the size of the Mazda Miata. Add a urban mini pickup smaller than the Tacoma and don't follow the huge F150 size. Not everyone wants an elephant size. Keep it simple again. Add a small mini wagon little bigger ( about 6-10 inches longer) than the Mazda 3 Sport. Don't follow the new Honda hatchback with too steep slop angle roofing and hatch.

I worked at a Datsun store in 1975. They were reliable cars but they started rusting on the boat over.
IMO, Nissan is in the same situation today. Too many cars being built and sitting all over the place in TN. It's going to be the 90's all over again. I have seen this first hand with my father being part of the first group of Employees at the Smyrna, TN plant.

I bought a 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R in 1999. It might have looked boring but it didn't drive that way. That had the 2.0 SR20DE engine. I gave people rides in that and they were shocked at the balls that it had. Due to how I often drove it, it cost me a lot in repairs and it is the reason that I don't drive my cars like that today.

I am afraid this so-called turn around of Nissan will eventually leads to its death. Modern Nissans are not what they used to be, they were utterly reliable and dependable cars and trucks yet the new ones are a far cry from that. I owned 13 Nissan (still have two of them) but I doubt if I will ever buy a modern Nissan.
I have one of the last Nissans before Renault's input: a 2003 Almera diesel (model code N16 - Bluebird Sylphy in North America), designed in 1997.

One of the worst mergers in history is the merger between Nissan and Renault. Nissan's went from being a high quality and very respected brand 2 total junk with awful CVT transmissions, poor reliability and low resale values. Nissan has taken the place which held by Hyundai and Kia in the subprime market place

Agree 100% my 1987 Nissan Pick Up had over 500,000 miles on original engine bought it new and drove the Hell out of that little truck. It died in my driveway after a trip out of town. It made it back home with me in it when it gasp it last breath. Best vehicle I've ever owned. Since Renault bought Nissan I've heard so many horror stories about their lack of dependability. The Frontier only a few model years have had some problems but not like the cars..
In Africa we have the small pickup called the NP200. Its got a Renault interior and a Dacia engine.
My first Nissan was a new 1974 Datsun PL620, a pickup truck. I actually customized it and made it into a removabal hard top convertiable. And I also later designed a Jeep style soft top for it too. My 620 pick up got tons of compliments thruought it'a life when the top was down or when I had the soft top on it driving around.
I currently drive my late wife's 2o14 Altama S. I am 99% vary happy with the car but I will ALWAYS have concerns with any manufacture's CVT transmission. The CVT is a great idea an works perfectly so far at 50,000+ miles. However I believe any car companies CVT tran's weak spot will always be the drive belt that needs to indure massive frictional loads every secone it is rotating.
I disagree that design was a problem in the 1990s. In my country Trinidad, the Sunnys and Sentras were the best vehicles, affordable, reliable, easy to maintain, no electronics problems, and looked good too, even though looks are irrelevant when buying a cheap dependable car. The Sentras were strong. Some people abused them, running without water or oil, and the engine didn't die.
But the new vehicles are unreliable. Too many sensors problems, electronic problems, etc. Suspension is much weaker. The older Sentras still have a high resale value 25 years later in comparison to the new vehicles 5 or 10 years old.
Some of the strongest cars in my country were also the Bluebirds and Laurels! But Nissan stopped those cars in 2002 :-(
SR and RB engines were the best in the world. And there is no replacement :-(
But the Nissan Pathfinder was the best SUV available.

A friend of mine had a Nissan Pathfinder and he went off roading all the time. Later I had a girlfriend who bought one, and it was great for her too.

The car I learned to drive with was a 90s Nissan Altima. Sure I'm not the biggest fan of the new CVT and the average reliability, but all in all Nissan still makes some really great cars from the Maxima, GT-R and the Leaf.
the footage of cars used are often very wrong. You also Don't talk about the birth of Infinity, The shared parts with Renault, for some Nissan it's hard to know how much was designed by Nissan or Renault.
I think Infinity was a mistake, especially to bring it to other markets like Australia where they barely sell. Most Infinity cars are ugly bland blobs on wheels and no one buys them here at all.
There’s absolutely no doubt that Carlos Ghosn and the Renault-Nissan alliance saved Nissan.
However, it did come at a cost. True, Nissan’s were over engineered, but that’s what made them great. Absolutely bulletproof engines like the VG engine family is my case in point. They could be practical family car engines that ran reliably for decades like the VG30E in my ‘88 Maxima that I still own or twin turbocharged screamers like the VG30DETT in the 300ZX, not to mention the still impressive R32,33,34 Skyline GT-R’s with the RB26DETT still being relevant to this day.
Now it’s cheap, flimsy cars that communicate that just by a cursory eyeballing and the fiasco that is the CVT’s that fail at appalling rates in the Sentra and Altima and the fact that Nissan will practically finance anyone.... plus letting the Z and R35 wither and rot on the vine as the competition zooms right by. It’s sad as I liked Nissan’s more enthusiast based cars like what the Maxima used to be, it was so much more fun then a comparable Toyota Avalon, much faster and just as reliable, plus if you wanted Nissan’s flagship sedan with a manual transmission, Nissan obliged. Not anymore and now picking a ‘18 Avalon over a ‘18 Maxima is literally a no brainer.
I see it like this, an older Nissan is like a Seiko watch, tasteful, elegant, reliable and durable, like the Alpinist. Nissan’s current crop are MVMNT watches, stylistically they’re OK, but underneath are cheap garbage that at any price you’re massively overpaying for a mediocre product where you could literally find a Seiko that would be absolutely superior to it in everything significant detail for often times LESS then the MVMNT.

A 1997 Nissan Sentra GXE as my first car and I loved it and it lasted over 30 years. With that I did have brand loyalty and I know that Nissan has come out with excellent styled cars, but with underwhelming power. Also another issue I hear a lot from recent Nissan owners is the poor reliability of the CVT transmission. Its one thing for a component of the engine or a window regulator to go bad, but to hear from 3 Ex-Nissan owners owning a Nissan from 2016+ not go back to buy one, is a BIG issue. Nissan go back to 5-6 speed transmissions that is tried and true and focus on fuel savings elsewhere. Lastly, the NISMO line....when you buy a Sentra NISMO edition, you get no engine performance upgrades....why even?

Nissan cvt transmissions need to go and they need to put the 370Z transmission in their cars. Some people who buy used Nissans are having transmission problems at 100,000 miles.
Had a 1991 SE-R five speed, 149bhp, had it cooked by Jim Wolfe, a wolf in sheep's clothing, dusted a lot of so-call "muscle cars", 279k later gave it to a friend in Seattle, they don't make them like that anymore. I wish they would go back to a low cost performance car, with reliability but the industry is now what it is, supermarket shopping.

80s and 90s Nissans are 💩. I mean, sure their highend models are good, as with all the other japanese brands (plus more reliability) but their entry level cars are very much disposable cars.

They are very much alive, but with Renault gearboxes that die on owners a few years after the car is purchased from the concessionary, are darn expensive to repair and can only be replaced with a new gearbox that will again die on you as the original one did.
Hmmm, Renault are using Nissan gearboxes actually and a lot of the engines and gearboxes are shared design between the two companies these days..As far as reliability goes Toyota has had plenty of blues ( quite a few issues actually) as all companies who have embraced modern canbus computer systems...Most problems are with electric systems that are endemic in all manufacturers...eg most manufacturers use the Bosch ABS systems ...even Mercedes use this ABS system...Canbus issues are with ALL manufacturers some a bit more then others...You ask all your friends what kinda issues they have with their 5 - 7 year old cars and I bet you will find similar problems with all cars...The complexity is the difficulty in diagnosing if you aren't overly familiar with software programs...Overall reliability has improved vastly over the last 15 - 20 years since canbus became everyday on cars manufactured. I would buy a Nissan today as I think they make a great product. I have myself a Renault and a Nissan and both are great reliable cars plus easy to fix as I have found...I treat any repair as a challenge and learn what it is about in order not to be ripped off by a dealer/repairer and also not to have it happen again....too many people willing to blame others for their own ineptitude and laziness as I can read by some of the previous comments...and don't get me started on ignorance...

Well Ghosn pulled them back from the brink, no doubt, but I still wouldn't buy a Nissan today unless I had a lot of money to throw away on sport model. The Qashqai, to me and a lot of Aussies, is VERY underpowered with a 2 litre motor in a heavy body. It is a model crying out for a turbocharged engine better than the NIssan 1.6 litre turbo as fitted to the Juke sport. This is the same as the Xtrail...lovely body, beautiful interior but hamstrung by a conventional underpowered 2.5 litre motor with a laggy, noisy CVT transmission. The Aussie market has lost the small Pulsar passenger car (a real shame), the Murano (which was a great SUV) and the lovely Maxima.
If Nissan really wants to power ahead then, imho, they should either improve the CVT they use or dump it in favour of a reliable and proven dual clutch or modern torque-converter automatic of at least nine gears. They should offer smaller turbocharged engines of around 1.5 litres outputting around 130kw of power and ditch the naturally-aspirated clunkers. They should work on increasing the range of the Leaf (which is vital in countries like Australia and the US) whilst also lowering the entry price for that model. They should be offering a greater range of hybrids with the emphasis on economy AND performance. Just my two cents worth...

I bought my first Nissan a year ago a Nissan Leaf used 2015. I've been satisfied with it but the battery life looks like it will be limited and they just raise the price of replacement battery. And now I'm hearing about all the problems with their Transmissions but that doesn't apply to the leaf which thankfully has no transmission. But the dealer in the company has been fairly nice to work with. But for a long time I've been a Acura Subaru VW owner but never a Nissan. In their conventional cars there's nothing that really attracts me. And the leaf seems to be lagging behind the bolt in range by quite a bit a factor of two.
