My first year of Sports Betting and Betfair Trading for a living

  • Here is a review of my first year of Betfair trading, which didn't include Bet Angel. That came later.
    Though to be completely honest, I started by arbing. This is similar to what you see when matched betting in modern markets.
    It was an era on the Betfair betting exchange where sports trading was unknown, where gambling or trading sports for a living was deeply scorned (no change there then) and dropping out of a well-paid job to do it was just plain crazy. Even Bet Angel didn't exist at that point, that was still to come.
    My motivation to become a professional Betfair trader wasn't because of desperation but a desire to do something that somebody hadn't done before and to do something special.
    Here is my story.

    Really interesting video, great level of honesty. Would you say that with more people trading now, that your profit margins are smaller? Or do you think this has been mitigated by the extra markets and liquidity that have been added to Betfair since it opened?

      I didn't have week by week data for the left-hand side of the graph so it's just the average of the values the right-hand side is my progress by the week from that point onwards. The left-hand side is also full of newbie errors that everybody makes so it's slightly lower probably mainly for that reason.

    I keep asking people about value. Is it essential to find value when scalping? People just throw the 'only way to win in the long run is to find value'. But is this true when scalping?

    • @betangeltv
      @betangeltv  Před 3 lety +1

      No, you don't need to know anything about value when scalping or trading in general. When trading you are trading volatility in effect. You may have to anticpate what the market is doing, but knowing value is not that important.

      I worked for a consumer technology company before doing Betfair full time. I would travel around Europe project managing for them. Completely different from what I do now, but I had been trading in my spare time on financial markets for a long time.
      I never went to University and started my working life at a software distributor.
      There is literally no job that would have paid me as much as doing this full time.

      I've always been reluctant to 'sell' the concept in terms of what I achieve as that's come after 20 years of practice. Something I do naturally can take a bit of time to learn and encouraging people to use larger stakes can be very risky if you have never traded before. So I've always been cautious on publishing results.
      However if I did you could probably pick any period and it would be in the tens of thousands spread across a few accounts. I run manual and automated stuff on seperate accounts. But as I said, I'm well practiced.

    • @flyingguru517
      @flyingguru517 Před 3 lety

      Well this year net pl would be what people is interested, not 20 years ago to see what is possible these days

    • @betangeltv
      @betangeltv  Před 3 lety

      I'm actually getting better over time as I learn more and use features like automation to work harder in more markets. I'm unsual though, so bear that in mind. But I won on all 28 races at Cheltenham this year and I've had record Derby, Grand National results to name a few. I'm still miles better than when I started 20 years ago.
      My 'worst' year was still my first.
