I just did mine, same heater, 10 years old. The coils were so dirty I don't know how the unit was still working. This video made my preparation easy by having all my tools ready to go. I'll be servicing my water heater again in two years next time. Thanks for the video. Ryobi 1/2 inch impact gun removed the anode rod with no problem.

One thing I’ll mention: While you were talking about Aluminum anode rods, you mentioned that you never drink your hot water.
I agree that I never _directly_ drink hot water from the tap, but it’s not unusual for me to use hot tap water while cooking, or particularly, say, when getting water that I’m intending to heat or boil (for example, in a teapot.)
Anyway, just thought I’d mention it. And, again, thanks for the video.

I have the Geospring heater but mine has an anode rod alarm light and code “F16” indicating that the rod needs to be replaced. I did not see a wire attached to the top of your old rod and you did not replace with a rod that has the attachment for the sensor wire so no problem but if someone has the sensor wire on theirs then they need to get the replacement. Since GE no longer makes this hot water heater you can buy the replacement from Bradford White which I think bought out GE hot water heaters. The rod will cost about $200.00 so you need to decide if you want to get one without the sensor for about $50 and just inspect from then on. Thanks for the great video.

Just for future reference - When refilling your tank, have the PTR valve open until water does start coming out otherwise the tank may pressurize too much and could have all sorts of repercussions. Great vid though!

@@DIYJIM It is enough to have a valve open at a faucet. Same concept of pressure relief. I wouldn't open the TPR if you don't need to, they can be tough to get them to re-seat. If it really does "overpressurize," then the TPR would open on its own.

This was a great video! Thank you! I have the 80 gallon Geospring. I was not getting the same hot water output I has previously and suspected a bad heating element. This video gave me the confidence to tackle my issue. The factory magnesium anode rod was a non-bendable 48". Had to bend/break it in half to get it out due to ceiling height clearance. Replaced with a bendable aluminum one from home depot. Also replaced both heating elements because one was bad. My tank drained very slow - suspect partial sediment blockage.

If you’re going far enough to drain it down you may want to pull out the elements and inspect or replace them. Had the same model that burned out the top element tripped the breaker. Replaced the element but wont turn on the top or bottom element or compressor. I wasn’t able to find a replacement board so new water heater time for me. Thanks for the video though.

I learned something. As far as drinking hot water, if you’re making tea, you might use hot water in the pot to get a jump on heating the water. Now I know to always use cold water.

I purchased a similar GE GeoSpring Heat Pump water heater back in 2016 and it started throwing fault codes 6 months after the extended 5 yr service warranty ended. Bradford now covers these as GE no longer sells this type of heat pump water heater. I just replaced the fan and Bradford sent the part for free (10 years parts) but, again labor is NOT included. Literally 1 month later it throws a FF code and stops working again. Now it looks more serious and unfortunately nobody works on them. My HVAC guy sniffed it looking for a leak, but couldn't find it and he said the evaporator coil looked very rusty (this is located in a clean conditioned space) and said unfortunately they don't work on water heaters. I called over a dozen hot water heaters service companies and plumbers in around Atlanta and no luck and Bradford doesn't have a support/ service list. So looks like this is now going to be a standard electric heater until that stops working. Highly recommend not buying one of these heat pump water heaters and just buy a Rheem Marathon.
That sucks I guess I have been lucky so far. Not sure what I would do if I had those kind of problems. If I had natural gas were I live, I think I would try on demand hot water. Thanks for watching

Just found this and wow it great.. Since this is a heat pump and there is a drain pan it would be better to use a liquid coil cleaner like used on residential HVAC service to really clean the coil vs vacuuming the coil.. you want to remove the dirt on the fins to help with the efficiency of the unit. My brother has one at his house .. and is not aware of how to properly service them.. and it seem MOST plumbers are afraid of them.

wrap the first 18" of stub out on the top water pipes. They are big heat sinks. Its like $3 to insulate them too.

Thanks for video. Mag rods come in .6 and .75 threaded Dia. I assume this is .75 with 1 1/16” nut top looking at video. GE no longer has this part and no help. Most are 42/44” long I’ll have to cut or leave it 3” long.

Great video Jim! I have the same water heater. When I started the filter light was on. After completing the maintenance the light was still on. Is there a sensor I could clean? Or another step needed?

Great video first I've seen that tells of both killers of hot water tank missed the third one though when you start to find it gets to the point where it ownly gives 5 gallons of hot water before it goes cold plumbers say replace it with a new one all you need is a new dip tube also what make is your hybrid I'm looking at going low budget solar and I need one that can run on 110 volts can this one

I have the same water heater. every time i run the hot water on bathroom sinks and showers, water smells like rotten eggs. last service was done in 2016. I had cleaned up all p-traps. Do you think is because the A Node is dirty? thanks fir the help in advance. May God bless You and your family.

Likely the anode needs to be replaced. I noticed mine also started smelling a little like that and just ordered a new magnesium anode (they didn't have in stock locally).

I have the same hot water heater. On the bottom there is a square ish panel with an electrical symbol on it. It started very slowly dripping water, any idea what that would be?

Could a hot water heater with an heat pump be used instead of an air conditioner. From what I've looked into the temperature drop is at most 4° I do believe.
It does make my laundry room colder but in a big room not sure if it would help much. I guess it would help some.
I have a geo spring as well. Are the a node rods basically universal? This will be my first attempt at DIYing this. I see several places along th pipe fittings that are leaking and need to fix them too.

I have an electric 60 gal hot water tank that is working fine but about 8 years old. (10 year model). Do you think this hot water tank is worth the money for replacement?
When I bought my heat pump hot water heater I was able to receive a rebate from my electric company, after the rebate it cost about the same as an electric hot water heater. I like that it helps a small amount as a dehumidifier also in my basement.
I have this exact heater. I have the F9 and F4 codes. F9 is lower element and F9 is the fan not starting. I ran the diagnostics and the fan runs fine. Just won’t start when it’s supposed to. Any ideas as to why? I don’t think it has anything to do with the lower element going bad, But, I will update tomorrow when I replace it.

Do you know the diameter of the anode rod? I have a 50 gallon geospring. And it’s 39” in length? It seems as though there are no 39” rods made. Can I buy a longer one and cut it to length? Thanks.
I cut my rod to Length, I’m not sure what the diameter was.

I'm wondering if maybe a heat pump water heater that never uses the traditional resistance heaters really ever creates sediment like a traditional water heater? Also, would the anode rod be consumed if you're not using the resistance heaters?
I use my heater on hybrid mode. Hope this explains why. But that is a good question I’m really not sure. I never thought about that. Maybe I will do some research. Thanks for watching
What size is your rod? I have the 80 gal model, and it’s a 61” rod, and I’m having a hard time sourcing a new one. Any leads would be helpful!

Great video! I’m going to be getting a Rheem hybrid electric water heater soon. One question though…does the anode rod go the full length of the tank? If so, how did you get it out without hitting the ceiling?

I never change heating elements until the stop working. Thanks for watching. I really do not think the heating element gets used much if you are using the heat pump mode

@@kennytran9240 it has to be getting close to needing changed. I don’t think you need to be in a rush. It all really depends on how your water is where you live. You can always just drop the water in the tank a few inches and change it. You don’t have to drain the tank if all your going to do is change the rod. Thanks for watching

Maybe you bumped a wire that is connected to the fan. Sorry can not help more I never had that problem.

I have the same water heater except the top of mine is gray and I have an f17 code which is the anode rod code I looked down in at mine and it has 1 wire hooked to the anode rod, I did not see you unhook a wire in your video, any suggestions can I put just a regular anode rod in?
Sorry I’m not sure, you are right I don’t have a wire connected to mine. I would try looking it up in the manual.

Maybe you could try to take the valve off but it is going to make a mess if it starts to flow again. If you do get another hot water heater, maybe think about installing a filter on your water coming into your house to try to filter out some of the sediment. Hope you get it fixed sorry could not be more help.
This was a very informative video. I have the same water heater . A few months ago the filter alarm started beeping. I did all the cleaning just as you did but after a day of use the "beep" comes back on. Could the A-node rod cause this?
I really would not think the A-node rod would cause this problem. I have never had an alarm on my water heater. Sorry i can not help more. Hope you get it figured out.
I had that same issue for years. Mine is one of the earlier generations. I think I bought mine in 2012 or 2013. I finally contacted the company that bought out the Geospring line and/or support. There was a known issue and they sent me parts to install to resolve it. It has happened a few times over the past several years, but nothing like it was doing previously. I tried to change my anode rod at that time and could not get the old one to break loose. It looked almost like it or the housing where it threaded in was bent out of alignment. My socket kept wanting to round off. I finally gave up.
I found this video after having several alarms, and after having marginal hot water, it looks like the heat pump was shutting down because the heating coils in the thing have mineral deposits on them.
Why have i heard guys say to do away with the anod rod....makes em last longer ?

We have the same water heater. I followed your steps to drain/flush the sediment out of the tank and I could not get a flow to come. No water was coming out of the hose. I followed all over your steps too. Any advice?
Sounds to me your hose is clogged can you use a shop vac and vacuum the end of the hose to see if you can unclog?

Sorry not sure I would think they would sell them where you bought it. Everything in this country is getting crazy.
Home Depot sells universal one's they work just fine. Just get the right wattage. The 80 Gal Geospring uses a 4500W in the upper and a 4000W in the lower.
