- There are more than a million buildings in New York City that weigh 762 million tonnes (1.68 trillion pounds).
The massive cocktail of concrete, metal and glass is one of the critical factors causing the city to sink at a considerable rate of 1-2 millimetres per year, according to researchers at the United States Geological Survey and the University of Rhode Island.
But it isn’t the only cause.
In this revealing video, journalist Alexander Trowbridge asks experts to explain the unusual combination of natural events causing the Big Apple to dip, and how the city prepares to mitigate the situation.

What kind of One Piece spoiler is this
The internet being the internet again. Smoke and mirrors.
It's giving Atlantis realness
It's a little deceptive to mention CO2 emissions from buildings in a discussion about adapting to sea level rise and land subsidence. While reducing CO2 emissions may slow sea level rise in the very long term, it is not a mitigation strategy that will work over the next hundred years. It's much too slow for that, and New York City can't wait.
CO2 is completely off theme altogether in my opinion
@@luigicirelli2583 What how? Talking about glaciers melting and sea levels rising due to greenhouse gases and yet CO2 is out of the picture?
Stinking, not sinking.
The big U…I hadn’t heard about that. I thought the yanks were performing their usual “Naw, it’ll be fine”maneuver. Way to be proactive, guys! You need to do more of that. Infrastructure
I misunderstood NY is sinking economically with the title.
thats also true
well, combining sea level rise and land subsiding, the city "sinks" by around 5mm every year. that's not really a lot. it would take 200 years to sink a meter, which would be the point where the city is in trouble, sorta? i mean, it's not good, but it's plenty of time to fix the issue. or for the whole planet to become uninhabitable anyway
*The Bad News:* New York City is sinking.
*The Good News:* There are ways to adapt and improve around the city to reduce water intake.
It’ll make a good base for coral reefs once it’s underwater, the temperatures are super high, and humans are gone.
That's wild
Interestingly, when I see images of NY in various fantastic movies, where it gets flooded it always looks so natural to me. Like, people are supposed to go around in boats and elevated rails/bridges/passways, there are floating schools, shops, restaurants, etc everywhere, and you can cross the city via skyways between tall buildings.
Remember the anti homeless vents reviewed by that fixitfelix guy? That's what needs to be solved first
Water level rising and the city goes down..😢
Nope. Look at the Netherlands. Easily fixed.
And the "miles thick" ice sheet melted away when man discovered fire.....
No qualifications whatsoever, but denying scientific evidence is a celebration of ignorance and stupidity
why is everyone saying cities are sinking instead of water rising?
Watch the video again and pay attention!
@@user-xp7ms4bx2r there's no need rewatch the video; the scientist in the video are very confused
To give it a Gullible 🌎 warming spin .☝️
In the case of New York it’s both, and it clearly explained in the video.
@@kellydalstok8900 you can explain it, but it is not true, so, explain all you want, it is not true
And millions of Americans will believe it's a conspiracy.
How does reducing greenhouse gases make Manhattan sink less quickly? I don't see the connection. Unless they build a wall around the entire island, there's going to be a problem eventually. They need to take some lessons from the Dutch and Venice.
It won't sink less quick than it's doing now but if the surface temperature keeps getting up, it can sink faster
How interesting!
Well it will not sink an entire ground floor within your lifetime so dont worry about it.
aren't we in the boiling phase?
The sea rise/subsidence rate is 4-6 millimeters per year, according to this video. At the maximum 6 mm change per year, it will take 166 years for the current status to change by one meter, which approx. 3 feet, which is not at all existential. So buying real estate in NYC is still a good investment from a climate change perspective.
4-6mm a year means water levels in NY will be about 1m higher in 200 years time.
but it won't
@@luigicirelli2583 Ok Nostradamus 😂
@@rickenbacker472 water levels have remained the same for centuries - historian
@@luigicirelli2583 No, they haven’t. A lot of land ice is melting, which leads to rising sea levels.
And global warming causes more heavy storms. A few years ago a hurricane hit New York, which was an incredibly rare event. The city will get more of those in the near future.
As everyone knows, New York is one of the biggest and most influential cities, and this fact shows that it is one of the causes of pollution or harm to the world. I wonder whether the water is rising or the cities are sinking.
its both of them
the sinking is caused by massive amount of weight including human beings
Compared to other problems caused by climate change & species extinction - where is "New York" ?
Let's move to "Eastern Manhattan" in Japan! That's great, and have ferries!
underwater city 🤔
Yes, this is true... New York is under water very soon.
Please, PLEASE, be a REAL STORY 🥺 🙏
Why do corporations need to have their main offices in New York City? There are other cities to move to in the huge country
Because of the talent concentrated in one place. They all feed each other. Investment banks need lawyers, accountants, IT etc.
The majority of the US stock markets are here, for one. Business friendly state and city governments is another. As someone else said the talent pool here attracts everyone. Also we’re very close to Europe

terrible propaganda; all these people are reading a shared script - it's a telltale
Pretty sure the BBC needs to run a two special on how Democrats are destroying New York (oh wait, doesn't fit their narrative).
New York is one of the greatest cities in the world! We LOVE our city. First-class museums, concerts, dance performances, parks, and libraries!! And what a joy to live with a diversity of people who by and large live harmoniously together!! If you prefer to live elsewhere, that's fine. Different people want different things in life. But please don't badmouth how others choose to live.
