Motip Carat primer is acrylic as well. I think it works well because that specific formulation is specifically mixed for foams. Very informative video. Montana paints makes a similar primer, I may try. Motip isn't really available in North America, that I can tell.

Oh man, sorry to hear that! Motip's main site has the chemical formulation for that primer. Just like you said, the main solvent is acetone. Unfortunately, here in North America, the main solvent used in aerosol paint is MEK, which will eat through EPO. I've searched and searched and cannot find any acetone paint :(. Even Dupli-Color, a brand of Motip that is sold here, uses MEK. It must be something with our VOC regulations. I did find something that I think will be close, from a German company, Montana Cans. Graffiti artists use it. It's also enamel, similar to Motip Carat Primer, they've also got an adhesion primer specifically formulated for foam. I've not tried it yet but it's not cheap-around €6/can.
hehehe, I saw that one too man. I may pick some of that up to test. I can't tell you how many hours I've used up scouring the interwebs looking for THE absolute fix to this dilemma. Actually just got back from an art store, went ahead and picked up 3 cans of Montana spray paint (primer+light and lighter grey). I'm actually an industrial designer working in the UAS field. Trying to build out an inexpensive UAS for a company. They were wanting it painted and "hardened" to use out in the field. We'll see how this works. Fingers crossed. I will say, the clerk was optimistic about it's properties and they're usually careful to undersell results for fear of unhappy customers coming back in to complain. Said it was very tough and should flex enough to stay on the foam, esp if the primer is used. I will say, there seems to be about 2X the amount of paint in the Montana cans. She'd remarked they have a very high pigment count.
Hope it sticks. Would be a pain to rebuild the whole project. If it doesn’t work you can always consider laminating, although I always find that quite a pain when having to do large curved surfaces.
Alle lakken en spuitverven op basis van oplosmiddellen zouden je EPO niet moeten aantasten. Het beste is natuurlijk altijd een klein teststukje te spuiten voordat je je hele project spuit. Dan weet je t altijd zeker.

Hoi, ik hoop dat je gelijk hebt.... Ik heb zojuist een bus Motip primer en zwart gekocht. Ik heb eerst geprobeerd hem te verven met Acryl, waardeloos. Het dekte voor geen meter en als het ging opdrogen kroop het helemaal naar elkaar toe (eerst ontvet met Alcohol), het zwarte vlak leek wel een wit vlak met wat zwarte lijntjes. Toen maar van narigheid tape erop gedaan. Nadeel van tape is dat dit altijd naar verloop van tijd los laat aan de randen. Toen jouw filmpje gevonden, we gaan het proberen, ik hoop dat dit werkt (want dan ga ik nog meer kleurtjes kopen en mijn andere vliegtuigen verven). Ik heb er vertrouwen in!
Wim Snor He Wim. Zorg dat je m goed ontvet met aceton. Evt zelfs licht opschuren met een fijn schuurpapier. Dat verbeterd de hechting nog meer. Evt zelfs 2 dunne lagen primer doen en goed uit laten harden en nog een keer licht opschuren. Als je tape gebruikt pak dan niet gewoon tesa schilderstape maar die speciale die gemakkelijk te verwijderen is. Niks is erger dan dat er een stuk lak aan je tape blijft hangen als je m verwijdert. Succes en als je meer vragen hebt dan hoor ik het graag.
Werkt geweldig! Ik heb 1 vleugel gedaan exact volgens je aanwijzingen maar het licht opschuren is mij niet zo goed bevallen, zelfs met korrel 400 zag je nog wat vage beschadigen ontstaan. De tweede vleugel zonder opschuren, zo strak als je maar kan bedenken. Morgen de elevator en klaar. Bedankt voor de supertip!

Great video! I´m preparing to paint my FW MIG EPO and i was wondering about the necessity to be only water based spray paints...based on your video i can use all kind of spray paints on it (different than foam).
Yes you can but make sure you degrease the EPO first and use a good styrofoam primer. If you want to use masking tape make sure you use descent tape that won't stick too well. You might tear off flakes of paint.

I´ll look for the primer first...the plane come with a silver painting and i´m planning to paint in yellow, brown or maybe red..i don´t see necessity of sanding it and take the original silver paint first. Regarding tape, i´ll use the blue one (removing some of its natural grip to avoid what you said). Good advice!
Raphael Cintra if It's already painted I would check with the manufacturer what kind of paint they used and look for the same type of paint. Using acryllic paint on an aceton based paint can result in bad adhesion.
For paint applied using acetone degrease -> primer -> car paint, did you find you could mask over painted areas with masking tape and pulling off the tape did not remove the paint? Thx

It's completely wrong though. Styrofoam is not in any way made of corn starch. Styrofoam is expanded polystyrene, a plastic made exclusively from petroleum byproducts.

Als je tape gebruikt pak dan niet gewoon tesa schilderstape maar die speciale die gemakkelijk te verwijderen is. Niks is erger dan dat er een stuk lak aan je tape blijft hangen als je m verwijdert.

Oh and ofcourse make sure you use a good primer and wait fur it to really cure before painting.

+lars montauban Acryl kan altijd, zeker over een acryl verf heen. Acryl over een verf op oplosmiddelbasis kan wel hechtingsproblemen geven.
Weet jij wat voor verf rc vliegtuig fabrikanten doorgaans gebruiken? Ook verf op acryl basis?
Other foam is made out of corn starch that's why the acidtone eats at it. Epo is made of real plastic strans plus it it press together at high heat
