      If they at least talked about a few other random 360 cameras and how they compare... this would feel much less of a shill. But hey, making contents are NOT cheap, and someone's gotta foot the bill... all things being said, I am glad Insta360 pays up so I can continue to enjoy their videos!! Kinda, but they brought that up straight away, and I'm pretty sure that was a different brand camera. In the world of 360, that matters. I've worked in 360 extensively and Insta360 is clearly the leader (kinda like DJI when it comes to drones).
      Ultimately, as long as they clearly label the video as sponsored (which they did in multiple places), I'm happy they're getting compensated for their work...cuz it's not like I'm paying them.

    I spent about a year with a One X2 as a supplementary camera on my channel and I found a lot of things I liked over my GoPros. At one point I even considered ditching the GoPros and using two Insta360s. But over time two major cons came up. Even though the app is great and very intuitive the reframing and export takes time and if you film a lot of footage like I did it balloons the workload a huge amount. Secondly, the protruding lenses are a real problem. I killed my first one very quickly with just a single drop. Lens replacement in NZ costs 2 thirds of the retail price. The protective sticky lenses fog up and scratch even easier and only the originals work, knock offs distort the view. I had to replace at least one set every couple of trips no matter how hard I tried and they are expensive. They also aren't waterproof. Because the lenses protrude the camera becomes unuseable in rain because the droplets distort the view. The pro protective case is even more expensive and scratches just as easily. In the end I probably spent half the value of the camera on protective lenses. So even though I really like the results and especially the long battery life, workload and the extra costs had me sell it. So just keep that in mind but they are great cameras and everything you mention is true. Just make sure it fits your use case.

      I actually found the Meta Glasses to be a more useful product for fishing. I might need to get a pair with polarized lenses. It was a nice alternative to a cheat or head mounted GoPro and were gonna wear glasses anyways. Plus I could take calls while on the water hands free.

    The X3 is pretty great. Here's another myth that seems to be glossed over: the 5.7K only refers to the 360 spherical video before output. Outputted video is 1080p max, though the software does allow you to upscale from that in the export settings as shown by Jordan who inputted a 4K res.

    • @pelanth
      @pelanth Před 7 měsíci +1

      The 1080p max is in the phone app. You can export upscaled but it's important to note that the more you zoom out, the more resolution you use. So you can zoom a little out from the standard view and get real 1440p.

    I have 4 reasons why I choose to film with the old, reliable DJI Action cam:
    1) Insta 360 X3 turns on really slowly. At least 15 seconds. Often what I want to film is already over.
    2) There is always the extra step of having to go through an additional program and of course extra data. By the time it reaches the final result, the video takes up at least 2x more space.
    3) Video quality is only for social networks and extra shots. Definitely not good as a basic camera. Even 4k Single lens it has such a fish eye effect and everything is blurred beyond 3 meters.
    4) There are many more automatic options on the phone app than on the computer. On the other hand, video editing on a computer has a higher resolution. If only they could get it together.
    Conclusions The camera is only suitable on bright days for social media entertainment videos or as interesting shots from unusual angles. Ideal for mountain climbers because you can get a drone-like effect in the view "from the side".

    I got one and I thought it would be great but the video looks really bad, it looked like a webcam from a laptop, maybe it only works in bright daylight but I didn't get a chance to find out because after the firmware update that was required by the app, it would no longer charge so I returned it. Basicaly it only looks ok if the video is in a smaller size but on a 1080p or 720p television it looks really bad like an old webcam. The resolution is realistically less than 480p once you export a video especially shooting indoors even with normal household lighting you would need very bright lighting to make it half way decent. The fake drone shots are cool but that only looks good in bright daylight and definitely only on objects or buildings not on a humans face.

    0:45 in fact 360 video is pretty bad in VR, you dont have any stereo 3D and even the big 360 cameras that have 3d capability, do so by stitching from the 4 to 8 cameras, which results in an inconsistent stereo (as in distance of things is seemingly random). VR180 is a much better format for VR, as it records using 2 lenses spaced as far apart as you eyes with no stitching and higher pixel density since its 180°. But yeah 360 is great for flexible editing and the freedom to rotate anywhere and for drone shots, where everything is so far away, that depth is not noticeable anyway.

    Had the insta 360 x2 and it worked well but hated the tiny round screen and it got really hot when charging and editing when sat still, sold it and bought the insta 360 x3 once it had been out a good while and got a much better price, it’s an extremely versatile camera, for fast moving water sports is fantastic and yes I own go pro as well but it’s the fact you miss nothing and can get the exact frame you want and pan around to view others on the water. The screen is so much better on the x3. Only one thing you did nit talk about is the lens stick out and have to be careful not to scratch them or drop camera on tarmac ect as it will scratch or break lens, the fix is buy a dive case for water sports or lens covers and you can get metal cages for them to protect your investment. I have had no freezes or any malfunction at all and had no buyers remorse as I often do with this 3rd generation camera. 😎😎😎😎😎

It's easy to overlook this fact because it's only mentioned in a text caption at 00:13; otherwise, this video follows the format of Chris & Jordan's regular reviews. IMHO, this is borderline deceptive and undermines the credibility of this channel. There should be a small "sponsored content" text overlay over the entire video.

    I really had those ideas too, until my friend let me try his Insta 360 and saw his footage, really amazing, still it is not magic, the merge line between the cameras is a bit blurry and a 360 degrees image area is huge so the resolution is comparatively small, photos or stills are not comparable with a real camera or phone

    This is the first one of your videos I thumbs-down, and I have watched every last one from TCS to PP. I get that you have to make money, and I am happy that you are. I'll even watch and like the videos, but if you're going to post an ad, just label it as such, and don't try to insult your viewers' intelligence.

    😕 I’ve never liked PetaPixel’s willingness to debase itself with sponsored content funded by companies that it also reports on. Jaron’s insistence that he keeps firewalls in place to protect editorial independence is a lot like a restaurant manager insisting that the cigarette smoke can’t make it out of the smoking section.
    Never thought I’d say this, but… sorry guys, bye.

    the bottleneck of forcing files through their software is the worst experience. 360 footage needs a direct path from camera to NLE, no middleman transcoding or exporting step.

    I love you guys and have great faith in your integrity, but shilling for a specific camera company is a slippery slope. Do beer ads or car ads, that fine, but you've spent a lot of years building your credibility in the photographic community.. Don't ruin it now, please!

    you should make a video about the dishonest / decpetive marketing of insta360 and them asking youtubers to compare the ace pro to the gopro and not the dji action 4. with the gp having a smaller sensor of course its going to look better than a gopro... this is deliberate deceptive marketing and they are taking the public for fools
    insta360 are a scumbag company and deserve zero support and it needs exposed.
    look at peter lindgrens review - he just so happened to love the ace pro compared to the gopro - know you know why.
    While you have $1 in your pocket , some scumbagf somewhere will want it and will lie to get it.

    Professionally, I have always been attracted to these 360 cameras, especially coming from a VR background where we used to shoot a lot of car interiors for the manufacturers. The issue with 360 imaging generally - at least commercially in say hotels, planes, cars, yachts... is that the real work is in preparing the space. Not only does the client want to see their 'product' looking perfect, but there are things that they don't want customers to see. For me, these cameras are fun and have potential: frankly I would buy one in a heartbeat if I could think of an application where I could get from shoot to final export without the footage getting trimmed out of the timeline. As a saddo who uses geared tripod heads to get all my verticals, straight and parallel, I may just need some OCD therapy to use one of these cameras!

    You didn't delve into the complexities of editing raw video on a PC. The reason the app seems so user-friendly is that it doesn't handle raw footage. Editing raw footage in Premiere Pro can be a nightmare, even on powerful, modern PCs. Also, many of the myths you mentioned are new to me, and hang out with a lot of camera nerds.
    Also a huge killer is that the save files are not seamless you lose about a sec of footage between each save file.

    You forgot to debunk one very persistent 360 myth and you even mentioned it: "the selfie stick gets cloned out". This is not true! This is not something special about specifically Insta360 cameras, or their selfiesticks. This is just that everything thin and straight enough will automatically disappear in any 360 camera's blindspot (like the mic-adapter on the side)! Nothing magical or computational!

      It’s also lower resolution which ch makes it look worse. They shoot in 5.7k for the complete 360 view. When you crop in to see the area you want to have viewed in your video it much lower resolution.

    I've never used one, but from what I've seen, you either make a really visually interesting shot, or you make an even worse shot then if you just used a regular camera. A lot more misses then hits. And the hits, I still can't help but think what an even more expensive setup would be with better dynamic range, more cameras so you don't get that fish eye effect with bad dynamic range and low resolution. But for the price, I really should not complain. But I still wont buy one.

  • @NoahBuehler
    @NoahBuehler Před 7 měsíci +3

    Yeah, to bad the Image quality sucks. I want to see a 360 cam with a APS-C or fullframe sensor, so that the DR is acceptable. Also it needs at least like 12k in order to have enough resolution to still look good after editing.

    • @lonerider68
      @lonerider68 Před 7 měsíci

      Kandao Obsidian has eight APS-C sensors for 12K 3D 360 footage that you are asking for - but it's going to cost a you a bit (can't get quality without paying for it).

    DPreview is not anything like it was, unfortunately the same with Chris and Jordan...
    Sponsored video uuugh...
    Also: I have a Insta360X2, but the quality is just not good enough.
    We used the Camera a few times in the car and it gave some special shots, but in the end the quality is just not good enough. Not enough dynamic range, not enough sharpness, not enough resolution, often very noisy.
    Only good for very specific shots, and also you are actually editing twice... First the 360 footage, and than afterwards you make the real edit...
