Sebring December Poor HPDE Driving

  • Corvette driver is an HPDE4 student and turns 2:38 second laps in a C7 on slicks. Over slows in the corners and mashes the gas pedal in the straights keeping smaller engine cars from passing.
    Had an understeer moment coming out of T17.
    The kit car gave me 2 (back to back) point bys and mashed the gas in a car that weighs around 1500lbs and has a big v8 in it. Ya, I can totally catch up to you on the straights...

    I don’t let myself get worked up with drivers like that, just go through the hot pit lane and let the 2 track workers time you back onto the track. Takes about a minute max and you’ll be done dealing with the douchebag driving.

      This was years ago but the part you don't see in the video is me doing exactly that. I ended up catching back up to the Corvette in the same session even pitting. I only compete in Time Attack now or wheel to wheel endurance racing

      Trackdays are primarily for challenging yourself and your car, not other drivers and theirs. If you want to challenge other drivers at trackdays challenge them on the stopwatch, not at wheel to wheel racing, especially if you're this much slower through corners lol

    I know this videos old but I’ve been there. It’s corvettes usually, people who have a lot of power but not a lot of skill. If you can’t get a good pass on them honestly best thing to do is just back off or get off track for a second and hop back on when there’s a gap. We’re all out there to have fun and the best thing to do is avoid conflict and deescalate things. Cheers!

If one of my students did this, I would remove him from the track.

    You look quick and these chaps look a lot less experienced. Getting wound up will never make you faster, improve your race craft or make these guys move out of the way any quicker. It's annoying what they're doing but trying to stay calm and collective and either stay close so they move, go to pits or hang back and you will have a much more enjoyable day out on track.

    This reminds me of being behind most Harleys/cruisers on a public curvy road. Mash the throttle on straights so you can't safely pass, then baby it through the corners.
    I've never driven on a track, but I hope my first couple times out I learn the rules of the road and how to be a courteous slow driver :) Even I could tell though that the Corvette was doing you dirty lol. Gets in front of you just to overbrake and ruin your line.

  • @ISpinUWin
    @ISpinUWin Před 6 měsíci +1

    I’ve posted a lot of examples like this too. It is sooo annoying. Another one is when you get a point to pass and they don’t let off the gas so you can get by. The often get mad because they don’t think you are trying. Well just because my car has less HP doesn’t mean I am not lapping the track faster. You know fast Miata drivers must live this nightmare often. Anyway after a lap I usually go into hot pit, report them, then when I am back on track I’m far enough away from them. But - sometimes I catch back up and have to do it all again.

    must be frustrating being a faster driver in a slower car. Koodos to your driving abilities! Always great to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
    But no need to get upset at slower drivers. This is HPDE and everyone drives at their comfortable pace. But giving middle fingers, trying to pass without point bys and intimidating other drivers from behind has no place at an HPDE event. If you were to get involved in a crash with any of the slower cars, you would be 100% at fault!
    If you have problems with any of the drivers on track, bring it up to event organizers.
    I hope by now you would have learned being patient and respectful of your fellow drivers on track. We are all out there to be safe, have fun and enjoy our time.

      You obviously aren't familiar with HPDE etiquette. If you get caught on the track, you're obviously slower overall, despite you having more power. It works out better for BOTH parties if the slower one lets the faster one by, and if necessary because of the faster one's lower power, give him a few turns to put some separation distance between you. In this way, BOTH of you get to concentrate on your laps without interference.
      In fact most organizations will discuss this during a drivers' meeting, and many will black flag you for doing what that Vette and that Seven did. Repeated offenses may even get you kicked out of the event.
      If a stock Miata catches me, I let him by and I do NOT just blow back past him on the first available straight. I ease up until he gets a few corners to leave me behind. If I didn't do this, I would rightfully be ashamed of myself. An HPDE is not a race.

      different cars, despite their vast horsepower differences, need to be able to coexist on the track. some cars are inherently better than others in certain parts of the track. by giving a driver a point by, you’re acknowledging that they’re faster than you. this implies that you respect their pace and are letting them by so you both can get on with your day. if the corvette lets him by, he’s just going to catch right up with him again. that’s just how it is unfortunately. however, if he lets the corvette by, he’ll just get caught by him again. it’s truly a lose-lose situation; neither driver will end up happy from this scenario.

    • @robertkorn
      @robertkorn Před 3 lety +2

      At most track day events, it is the responsibility of the car giving the point by to also back out of the throttle a bit to let the other car go by. It is not 100% the responsibility of the car getting the point by to make the pass, it is a give and take.

    Going to an HPDE event and getting all pissed off at the other drivers is pretty bad form. I know it can be frustrating (and yes, the Vette driver was being...difficult), but it is strictly a fun type event with drivers and cars of all different speed levels. I see guys in their 70s at these things, driving $200,000 cars slower than I would drive on my way to the market, and on the other spectrum practicing racing drivers whom I'm sure I have held up on occasion. If it is too slow or frustrating for you, take the next step up to time attack or some other type of racing.
    I understand the frustration, but if you are going to flip the bird at other drivers who paid their money just like you did, just because you don't like how they drive, IMO you should be kicked out. It isn't supposed to be that kind of event.
