A little update since uploading this video (5-Nov-2023), I am no longer able to disable postroll ads from now on. The checkbox still appears but I can no longer click it. This is also what will happen to older videos when you change the monetization settings.

Just fyi, this is the first video where I haven't been able to disable postroll ads anymore. The checkbox still appeared as normal but wasn't clickable anymore
... which is interesting as I didn't get any ads after the video (and I'm not a YT Premium user so it's not due to that).
Which is ironic, because I got my 1st CZcams post roll ad on this video.... (irony was because the video was about getting rid of them. Not meaning it regarding your comment here).
Too bad u didn't have #forsleep on this vid. Does it need to have that hashtag to submit it to the Google form? Or any ASMR video? Not sure i should submit this one, because it wasn't an actual ASMR video, but they didn't know that. 🤷🏼♂️

The post roll ad even on an informative video about the annoyance of post roll ads is annoying af, obviously. Thank you Luuk for all the time you are giving to help the ASMR community! I watch ASMR to help with severe PTSD, panic attacks, generalized anxiety disorder and yes, sleep. The post roll ads for me are stressful as someone who suffers with insomnia because once I've been woken up abruptly anxiety and disregulation take over and I have zero chance of getting back to sleep. I think CZcams execs probably assume someone who is annoyed by ads will buy premium but negative influence does not prompt me to purchase anything.
Sadly, this development has killed my ability to use ASMR on CZcams as a sleep aid. I'm getting ads before a vid, sometimes multiple times throughout a vid, and then at the end. I have PTSD and stress-related brain damage, being jolted out of rest by ads is _extremely_ punishing. I appreciate all of your hard work on this matter, Luuk. You're a complete gem. Thank you.

@@pardonjoon8835 The mobile version of Firefox allows add-ons including adblockers. There are also more complicated solutions to watching ad free CZcams on mobile but this approach has worked well for me.

CZcams has become so obsessed with ads in the last few years. First unskippable ads, then they doubled the amount, then both at the same time and now this. They really want to push Premium, don't they?
I wish there were ads that were done in an asmr style so this way ads can still occur but they won’t disturb the peace one has when watching asmr videos!

Yeah, that is a win-win for both the user and youtube. Fort a minute there, some brands did do ASMR ads but it didn't seem to catch on. This should be more in the conversation.
I remember there were those blenders adverts done in asmr style. And it was actual good asmr too. Proves to show that asmr ads do indeed grasp the viewers attention.

I'm so upset that CZcams keeps adding more and more ads. I remember when you could watch multiple videos without a single ad and now there is one with every video. I am glad creators like you are speaking up and trying to get CZcams to be reasonable when it comes to post-video ads. I have already fallen asleep to videos and woken up unpleasantly to some blaringly loud ad at the end.
It is incredibly aggressive for smaller channels as well. It’s like a deterrent. I subscribe to smaller channels and the smallest ones have the most ads sprinkled in. It’s awful.
I’ll report any ads I see and use the hashtag “for sleep”

Hey Luuk, we appreciate your efforts. They have not gone unnoticed. I'm also proud of our community for rallying behind you and showing support in droves. There is strength in numbers :)
Unfortunately, this was the nail in the coffin for me as far as CZcams's increasingly disruptive ad implementations go, and I've decided to download a browser that has a built-in ad blocker. I am not okay with paying CZcams simply to remove something that wasn't always there in the first place. I will find a way to support you and other ASMRtists monetarily offsite.

Like I said in the past, I use premium so it won’t affect me, but I find it ridiculous that they’re taking away the option for creators to enable or disable post roll ads. Thanks so much for all that you're doing, Luuk! What stops me from getting ads is the fact that I have an ASMR playlist. I've found that if I pick a video from my list and loop it, I won't be disturbed by an ad. I'd love to just let my playlist play the variety of vids I have on there, but it's not worth the chance of me being woken up😮💨
Impressed & grateful how much energy you have and still are putting into this. Your conversations with CZcams sound pretty circular - if the algorithm will eventually learn not to play post-rolls on ASMR, why not just let creators choose that up front...?

Completely agree; I brought this up and they said they don't think every single user will mind ads after ASMR, so that's what they want the model to learn. Don't know if it's worth the investment and risk if you ask me

I remember seeing a meme about 5 years ago or so, saying that “one day we’ll have the video as ads” (= so many ads in between that’ll feel like you’re watching a playlist of ads and in-between the actual video you wanted to see), and I think CZcams took this as a challenge.

a tip that may help people is setting a timer on your phone and clicking the "When Timer End: Stop Playing" option (scroll to the bottom of all the other sounds to find it). this will interrupt the video before it ends and it won't start playing again. unfortunately, i think this only works for ios, but it has helped me a lot :)
That stops a CZcams video that’s playing when the timer goes off? 😮
Ugh They heard us loud and clear = They are ignoring us. Not that this is the best solution, but if you have an apple device you can set a timer to end say 1 min before the end of the video. Under 'When timer ends' select 'Stop playing'. I assume Andriod has something similar.
Haven't heard of that in Android (I got one) but you were very nice to help some by giving that tip ❤ lots of blesses
Here's a possible work-around: We can add 7 hours of white noise or something after a normal ASMR video so that even if an ad plays at the end, the viewer will likely already be awake by then.

I love that idea! Or I wonder if the creator could put a time stamp when ads will play and people could set a sleep timer or have the phone turn off before that. Does anybody know if that's possible? 🤔
Good concept but I think 7 hours is excessive. My phone’s battery will die by morning. 😂

to combat this, ASMR videos need to be louder so the ads appear quieter, and youtube needs to do what twitch does: LOWER THE VOLUME OF ADS ON VIDEOS TAGGED WITH ASMR/SLEEP (though this can be abused by non-asmr videos, it still shows the ads regardless. and lets be real, so many ads are insanely loud for no reason)

More related to the topic on hand, I haven’t realized how annoying CZcams ads are since some changes that prevent ad blocker from working. Ads in the middle of the video and everything

Thank You for speaking out about this. We all have tried to speak with CZcams about this,but CZcams no longer listens to what us watchers want and just do as they please. It sucks cause we try to tell them and they just don't care. Which is a slap on the face to us
Thanks so much for your dedication to this! Lots of people will be switching to ad blockers/browsers that block ads, so youtube will be losing out on their money one way or another.
Thanks so much for everything you're doing, you're doing an amazing job. Let's all keep trying. Asmr is such a huge safe space for me, I'm not ready to lose asmr youtube... but do we need to start talking about alternatives maybe? Maybe soundcloud or blog sites like tumblr?
WHAT IF everyone stops using CZcams for a month and scare the shit out of CZcams until they leave us alone with their ads. I don’t like the fact that they make you pay for no ads. Make me pay for other things but not for ads. If every video gets 0 views what are they gonna do? And i don’t even want to think about the “influencers” that are doing this as a full time job. Ultimately, the power is in our hands.
I stoped ASMR cause of this problem. So now I just put it on SPA radio on Apple Music, to help drift me to sleep.

Thank you Luuk! You really are someone who does care people’s needs and benefits! I would suggest that if this ads thing still didn’t work out that well maybe you can consider to switch the platform (not sure if Spotify would be better but you can try maybe) if this could be an alternative solution
i like to use the automatic turn off feature on my devices on longer asmr vids so I'll fall asleep and my device will turn off before the vid ends

CZcams's algorithms can't even figure out that me downvoting and channel-blocking a dozen shorts about something means that I'm not interested. Have zero faith in their claims.
Holy crap… this has already happened to me a few times. I fall asleep to an ASMR video and then I’m jolted awake by an ad.
How do they know it won't play at the end of asmr? Some of us use white noise which isn't listed as asmr on yt. This is ridiculous!
They hope their models will learn from data that viewers don't respond well to ads after relaxing videos (the data contains information about how many times an ad is clicked, how many times it's skipped etc). So basically they can't guarantee those ads won't be served

Thank you. I would love a video with "work arounds". I used to listen to an asmr creator who had ads at the beginning and end, but back then there were little yellow/green blips at the bottom of the screen to show when ads were placed. (That was wonderful, so of course yt eradicated that.) I would watch the first ads, skip to the end ads and watch those, then hit replay and watch the video ad free to fall asleep to. It was a very slight inconvenience but it worked well and she still got her ad revenue.

I loved your suggestion to add some kind of # to differentiate actual ASMR videos for sleep from videos talking about ASMR or reacting to it. I really think actual ASMR videos SHOULD be the exception. otherwise youtube doesn't gaf about their audience nor their own platform (ASMR is one of the biggest categories on this platform, it's not like we're a tiny community, some videos reach millions and millions of views). this will cause people to leave this platform (and creators too). some people only open youtube to watch ASMR to sleep.
Anyway, I hope youtube takes the time to look into this and really be specific on the videos they're gonna put ads on. this will determine whether they care about people who use this platform or not.

This is sad. CZcams ASMR has helped me immensely over the past five to ten years but I’m increasingly going for Alexa’s relaxing sounds because it’s the only way you can guarantee you’re not going to be abruptly woken by some blaring obtrusive advert. The unbridled greed of this corporation is staggering. Their profits are so huge that the people driven away are expendable collateral damage.
I listen to the Sleep With Me podcast on my music player app with no ads and it's so helpful. If people have alternatives, they'll abandon youtube if the boundaries keep getting pushed. They're already mining our data - what more do they need???
They just want everyone to try to get premium, little do they know most people will just not use youtube as much (for ASMR anyways). I have premium but they just increased the price to 15.99!! Like what is going on?

I have always had somewhat mixed feelings about using an ad blocker because I obviously respect all my favourite CZcams creators and want them to receive every cent of ad revenue money they can get, but this is basically CZcams forcing me to use one... I should probably cough up and donate to people's Patreons and such.
thank you for all the effort you've put into this. sadly, I think youtube doesn't actually care, but perhaps I'm too cynical. i think one possible solution would be to make the asmr videos louder so that there isn't a big change in volume when the ads come in (i usually watch regular videos on volume 3-5/15 and the ads aren't louder in those and asmr around volume 10/15 because they're much quieter, so the ads blast my ears when i encounter them). of course, I don't know if that's possible without it negatively affecting the quality of the audio, background white noise, etc., so it may not be a solution at all.
Also not a bad idea, but I'm not sure what effects this would have in ASMR playlists where the new videos now have much louder volume that might also wake you up. Still, I think if you disable autoplay it might be a good solution :)

Thanks so much for trying. They say they listened to you but let's be honest, they didn't. It's all about profits, and now you have to be wealthy enough to pay for Premium to enjoy ASMR. ASMR has become a huge community on CZcams, but not big enough in their eyes. Hopefully this backfires on them. Maybe someone comes up with a separate video hosting platform target for ASMR and all the business migrates over there. sigh.

This is really sad, honestly I can't even count how many times I got woken up by the sudden loud yt ads. It's really annoying.
If you are using an iPhone, you can set a timer that will go off just before the video ends and select „stop playing“ as the alarm so the video will automatically stop playing before an ad can come up

If one of the new videos is for example 10 minutes long I start my iPhone / iPad Timer and use it with "Stop playing/Wiedergabe stoppen" instead of a ring-tone after 9.50 minutes. So I will not be disturbed by an ad at the end of the Video. and the new ads-policy will not change anything for me or any Apple-User. I don´t know if Samsung and others have this too...
This might sound silly, but how about make the asmr vid with base sound very loud so ppl have to listen asmr at low volume, so when normal ad shows up the volume is low that won’t affect the listener. Generally, asmr vids are quiet that you have to up the volume then when ad comes out it is so loud that disturbs the listener. Then creator won’t have to worry about ads and earn more money and also help ppl. And put a disclaimer to lower the volume.

A few channels seem to be doing this already, it also would help with forgetting to lower the volume after watching asmr
Unfortunately that'll reduce the audio quality quite a bit because you'll introduce a lot more background noise and hiss into it by ramping up the gain on mics or increasing the volume in post. There's also a risk of clipping and distortion which will be unpleasant to listen to.
I'm against ads at the end of asmr videos but I just know I will not hear a thing 😭😅😴 and even if I do hear sounds while sleeping my brain makes up reasons for it in my dreams and I don't wake up. However some asmr videos have really low volume so I increase it and ads are usually very loud. So maybe it will help if asmrtists increase the volume a bit.

Well, I'm happy to hear at least CZcams understands the problem, and hopefully, eventually ads will not appear on ASMR. Still a sucky situation though.
They should play an ad at the beginning and place low volume adds at the beginning. A quick add would be great that way no skipping. Advertisment for sleeping products.

Apparently there are modded versions of CZcams or like... 3rd party players that play CZcams videos like LibreTube? Something to consider for those who want to block the ads for free.

They're lying. They're going to play ads before, during and after all videos on the platform. Eventually they will also play ads to people who have premium subscriptions. (Most subscription streaming platforms have already started doing this. Streaming services are essentially just cable TV over the internet at this point.)

If I can contribute my "anti-post video adds" life hack: on alot of devices there is a way to set some sort of sleep timer that will turn off your device at a certain time or after so many minutes. For example on (im going to say MOST) Apple products, if you go into your clock/timer app, you can set a timer and then go to where it says "when timer ends", click that and scroll towards the bottom til you find "stop playing" this should turn off your phone when the timer goes off. (it won't even set off an alarm btw) So when I go to bed I find my choice in ASMR videos and set the timer for slightly shorter than the length of the actual video. I hope this helps some of y'all 🥰
well... my youtube lite is officially over. the full premium is pricy with a ton of useless features so yea.. i already got woken up by a screaming lady from an ad on another asmr video.
I don’t get why ads at the end of the videos are a thing anyway. Who watches ads after the vid is over? I close the vid and watch something else. In the event I do have the ads playing, I’m doing something else and not able to skip or close the vid so I’m not watching it anyway. I never understood ads after a video. Does anyone actually sit there after their video has played and watch ads?

If you have ad block you can watch with no ads but the downside is you don't contribute to paying your favourite artists since you don't get ANY ads.
For STUDENTS: please be aware that premium is heavily discounted for you. Where I'm from, my premium sub is only 7 dollars a month. I use ASMR as my form of relaxation since I don't smoke or drink, and I also use is as a sleep aid. Premium will be a must going forward if you're like me so make sure to get the discounts.
All to push people in to buying Premium to be Ads Free. First the unskipabel Ads and the Number of Ads played goes up and now you aren't even able to watch content for sleep because the Ads are waking you up again. I already woke up for some times and changed to a Musik platform for days were I needed to stay asleep. Its sad to just hear the sound and not see the creator but at the and when you start drifting into sleep and the Ads start blasting it's more annoying. I still try to support my favourite creators on CZcams but it's not as often as before and I think it will go down more.
