Klaus Mertens, baritone
Ton Koopman, organ - Hudba
This is the best version of Bist du bei mir ever, My Lord he really sang the consonants well, I'm so in love with his voice I wish I could sing like him.
The first time. I heard this beautiful piece was back in 1972 while I was stationed in Germany It was my first assignment after vietnam ,the music is wonderful but when you understand the lyrics it's amazing my wife who didn't understand much German couldn't understand why I was crying during the performance until I resited the lyrics in English so tender and heart warming.
When was I listening to this late in the evening last week, my six year old son came down and said he couldn't sleep. So I let him listen to this, and then he went off to bed.
This is a love song of all times.
He really sings the consonants well, not only the vowels.
It is in his mother tongue. Important note to song students: THIS is benchmark pronunciation! I'd say - and I do not exaggerate easily - unsurpassable.
I've never seen someone with so much control over their voice. very nice :)
Thank you, KM.
After having listened to seven God-awful performances of this miraculous aria on CZcams, you have given me great pleasure.
Impeccable diction, beautiful phrasing, agreable voice, elegant ornaments.
Bravo!
BACH/MERTENS/KOOPMAN--the holy trinity of music for me!!!

Totally agree
Future 2050
I fail to see how four people could dislike this wonderful performance.
Wen stört das? Der Geschmack ist verschieden. Aber vielen bedeutet die Aufführung sehr viel!
@@CharlyBach-lb9nz I just time-travelled thirteen years in the past. Thanks.
Und Danke, nochmals, Herr Mertens!
Should be played at my funeral.
:-) well, thank YOU! Tack! I am happy you like my Bach interpretations. I have a special place in my heart for good old Johann Sebastian... :)
Kindly,
Per-Olov
I like the not-written note that he adds himself just before the very ending note of the phrase.
Das ist großes „Kino“. Perfekt ... Note 1 ... vielen Dank für diesen tollen Beitrag!
What elegance and what beautiful sound!. Love the ornaments. Thank you so much for this gift!.
Absolutely wonderful!
It touches our hearts, doesn't it?
I do love this song. Muy bonita ornamentación. Ser schön und geistlich gesungen.
Played this on the trumpet as part of my CSE Music practical work. Didn't do very well but passed the exam in the end.
So schon. Ich liebe diese interpretation. Danke, Lutje Belgien
I don't understand people who put 21 "dislikes" (probably these people are just oafs, pardon me!)
It is outstanding and very very personal, individual interpritation and very educational
thnx a lot for posting. It is one of the rariest videos extremly useful for professional singers/ vocalists!!!
I personally ask for more videos with Klaus Mertens!
zinchel agree.
+zinchel I don't either
+zinchel I don't either
zinchel, great parte of this dilikes are due the proximity of the play bar and the dislike-like icone. at least, i dont know now, but some time ago there was no need of conffirmation, if you clicked wrongly, it was already counted.
Oh I disliked your comment (pardon me!)
Beautiful, peaceful, and well rendered! Very nice.
I went to a wedding once in which this song was performed. My jaw nearly hit the floor and for the whole duration of the song I was astounded that they were performing it at a wedding!
Klaus Mertens ist wie immer großartig! Danke fürs Ins-Netz-Stellen.
When sung at weddings, the wording should be as follows
Then comes the second stanza starting with:
Bleibst du bei mir etc.
This version lets the new couple be together for a while at least, before they start thinking of kicking the bucket !!
Liebe Grüße
Why don't you choose another song if you don't accept the lyrics (and the sense) ??
I love Klaus Mertens ❤️ 💕 😍
Absolument magnifique. Transporté.
Wunderlich! Wirklich klar und ausgezeichnet spielt. Danke!
Das ist einfach nur wunderschoen gesungen!
Magnifique voix ! Justesse et douceur ! Pur bonheur !
This is very nicely sung. A very good control of piano. The melismae are perfect, too.
Very good job!
I find it interesting that there are versions with both male and female singers for this aria. Both are beautiful.
Beautiful.
Great beutiful song by Stölzel!
"Bist du bei mir" (English: "If you are with me") (BWV 508) is an aria in the 1725 Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach (No. 25). It was therefore attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, but the melody is part of the Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel opera Diomedes, oder die triumphierende Unschuld that was performed in Bayreuth on November 16, 1718.
Beautiful, peaceful and very lovely voice technique. I love this song.
I really like this. Apart from being stylistically beautiful, and such a well-controoled instrument, it seems to me that there is a certain warmth and lightness/affection, which is appropriate; after all, it's a song about love, not about death.
Did this song back in 7th grade and it's still one of my all time favorites :]
Excellent rendition, very beautiful!
Incredible beautiful! Sigh...
Per-Olov
Magnifique!
thank you God, for JS Bach
the best version of this aria/
bravo Mertens!
There is no better Bach bass
Baritone ?!
@@petatap what I was thinking
I don't it's "better" but check Peter Harvey.
I agree with you! he manages to convey the theme of a piece through both the precise pronounciation and some acting. Also, I love the fine nuances in his voice. He has nearly absolute control over it, which is so hard to achieve.
He also performs great oratories like Mendelssohn's Paulus. I simply think he prefers "Liedgesang" personally.
Wonderful!! Thank you.
Absolutely beautiful. So many singers have performed this aria - Dame Janet Baker is my other favourite.
beautiful voice , beatiful music
Bach ist immer bei mir...
Nicht hier aber! Diese aria ist von Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel!
Grande Klaus Mertens!
I love this music!
Woah I just read the words to this song, that's really sad!
theREALyumdub I wouldn't say that it's sad... To me it seems like a love song, because the most terrible thing existing, the death, isn't anymore terrible, when she is with him.
Das ist doch mal schön! Es gefaellt mir. =)
This is the ultimate rendition.
Thanks for pointing this out.
Stolzel ist auch immer bei mir.
He's the best tenor ever
he is baritone
''Se estiveres comigo, então eu irei alegremente
para a morte e a paz.
Ah, como então seria agradável meu fim
se suas belas mãos
cerrassem meus olhos fiéis.''
This was not written by Bach. It was a long running misconception that it was. Stolzel actually wrote it and this was confirmed when a manuscript was found approximately twenty years ago. Do correct the description. Lots of others on youtube have made the same error.
Some youtubers have published it correctly citing Stolzel as the composer.
Stoelzel, to be exact, when there is no "ö" at hand.
Stertzel? Never heard of that nigga. Just say Bach wrote it and be done with it.
@@sameash2990 That sounds pretty unfair
Gr8t voice and interpretation
Wunderschoen!
Great. Just wonderful.
:-) Dear friend... thank you. That makes my heart warm to know.
Peo
Very, very beautiful...
I'm actually singing this for a choir competition, after hearing this I'm pretty excited to learn it. :D
Splendid version, excellent choice! Congratulations ...
Beautifully done.
Wow! Großartige Interpretation! Weiter so!
Fantastico
wowwwwww his voice is amazing
Great! I'm impressed
genial! Gute Qualität
wunderschön
Splendide
i am going to chooose this song for my vocal exam grade 6. :o) thanks for the video. beautifull!!!
Sublime!
Beautifully sung
I like how he uses his voice
echt schön
yes it is, he seems to be German.
I am an actor and sing it myself, 95% of the singers have no clue about about acting and what this song is really about
@zot500 I once sang this at a wedding! :D The couple knew what the words meant and they loved it. After all, it's "till death do us part" ...
@zot500 As there is no capital letter to the word "du", it is addressed to a human, not to God... It is an aria on fidelity of spouses. Attributed to Stölzel, from the opera Diomedes oder die triumpherende Unschuld.
@starwarsjunkie73 I know that. Just look at how many operas are about Orpheus, but this song is not by Bach. Yes, it has been assumed to be by Bach for a really long time, but Stölzel is most likely the actual composer. Bach did put the piece in one of his notebooks, but he did that with many of Stölzel's (as well as many other composers') works. Type "bist du bei mir composer" into google and look for the janetwasserman link, which gets further into detail than I plan to.
LINDOOOOOOOOO!!!
Mooi en uitermate verzorgd.
This is what I call barroco peroformance! 10/10
schöööön!!
Fabulous
well since he is a german baritone - and a very good one when it comes to pronunciations - I would say you should go for his pronunciation :) Its really a great version this one. Though he is not the baritone with the biggest voice he has a fantastic feeling for the musical style and are doing great me thinks :)
Che morbidezza, bravo!
gorgeous
@zot500
well, isn't it one of the most honest proof of love? One can die with joy and peace when his love is besides him.
After all, Bach composed it for his wife, which he loved very much.
Wow! Beautiful rendition! I love this song.
To whoever uploaded this, I sing a bit of this song on my channel for the segment Ellen is doing called "Ellen Here's My Talent", and I was just wondering if I could post it here as a video response? If you don't let people do that no worries, just thought I'd ask!
@zot500 An Alto friend of ours sang this wonderful Deutsches Lied at our wedding on 12/26/1969 in Our Savior Lutheran Church, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Yes its german
I love this since i saw "merry christmas"
(i´m german)
Bobsterwald: his pronunciations is absolutly perfect xD
The " Bist du bei mir " setting is by Anna Magdalena Bach only ? ( without the help of J.S. ? )
How did she get a copy of the song ? ( the Stolzel opera was in 1718 )
