  • Musician extraordinaire, the late "Git-tar" Keith Allison sat with me for what turned out to be his final interview. We discuss his Texas roots with Mike Nesmith in College, his move to California that led to stardom on "Where The Action Is", his entree to The Monkees/ Boyce & Hart, co-writing the song "Auntie's Municipal Court" ,playing on their recording sessions, wrangling the Monkees to appear on the "Happening" TV show in 1969, and more.(Part One).
special thanks to Lesley Clack, Terry D'talia and James Commento of Raider Rooter

What an incredible interview! Loved it! I'm struck at how similar he looked to Chip Douglas as a young man. Like they could have been related. Good man. May he rest in peace

I planned on doing several interviews with Keith, we had so much to cover, but unfortunately one was all we got to accomplish before his health prevented us moving forward.

CZcams keeps recommending your page to me, and each time it's another awesome interview. What a blessing that you were able to capture Keith's thoughts for posterity just before he passed. Keep up the great work!

Keith Allison was a great guy and one helluva guitar player. I miss his playing style, and the man himself. And here’s a little known fact about Keith - his real name was Sidney Keith Allison! He was smart to use his middle name as his professional name. I mean, “Gittar Sid” just wouldn’t cut it, as opposed to “Gittar Keith”! And about Frankie Laine, he was the singer of the theme songs for a plethora of Western movies and TV shows, including “Rawhide”, “Blazing Saddles” and Tim Conway’s 13-week-wonder of a Comedy Western TV series called “Rango” in the 1960’s. In addition, he owned an automobile dealership, Frankie Laine Rambler. I’m betting that most of the people reading this don’t remember the Rambler (which came in several models). They were made by a company called Nash (that was also the maker of the “Nash Metropolitan”, one of America’s first truly compact cars). The company later became American Motors in Kenosha, Wisconsin

Mr. Allison quotes Keith Richards as saying "you take a bit here, you take a bit there" when composing. Chip Douglas credits George Harrison with the same quote.

How did he die? Was he ill at this time? Other than the heavy mascara, and maybe looking a little tired, he seems with it and his memory was perfectly fine. It's a real loss to the classic musicians community.

21:10 The Monkees never tried to fool America into passing themselves off as a "real" band but they got a raft of shit from the slightly older fans who worshipped the Beatles and gleefully pointed the fact that they used the wrecking crew out constantly. The Beach Boys? yeah, they used plenty of the same musicians but had Brian and Mike Love WRITING great songs, and their fans at first had NO IDEA they weren't playing on the albums! THEY GOT A PASS.Meanwhile the Monkees were deluded into think "We could do this hit song thing" NO, YOU COULDN'T AND....DIDN'T!
