- At the end of FP's spring training trip to South Carolina, the senior rowers hand pick and cox their own boats for a team race know as the "Gator Boat Race". The two varsity coxswains, Arthur and Ian, are the stern pair of the boat and rower Paul coxes it. This is the first time Ian has rowed and the first time Arthur has ever rowed port.
I️ love how bow six just don’t care, they just keep rowing along no matter how many crabs stern pair catch.

i have NEVER laughed so hard at something like this. its relatable too because this is exactly what i sound like when i cox. i just laugh at my crew when they catch crabs. the dead voice part is too real.

I'm so glad I'm not a novice anymore. I remember those days and they make me feel sick - crabbing and rowing with my blade on the water rather than above it!

When I first started learning how to row, I definitely caught crabs, but I think the worst mistake I made was rowing the opposite of what I was supposed to do. This video made me laugh so hard! Poor Arthur.

I’m more concerned about who taught this guy how to cox - I really hope it’s a rower in the coxes seat rather than an actual cox because my god that was some of the worst calls etc I’ve ever heard 😅
@@evasofia07coxes still usually need to learn the basics - I’m by no means a good rower but I have to know how to do it on a technique level to be able to instruct my crew properly

Well, 6 years later this shows up in my recommendations... In fairness to these guys, when I (a crappy master's rower) coxed for the first time I learned that I couldn't steer and count at the same time. All the jobs in the boat are hard.

Update...27 March 2021. I finally got it. I didn’t realize that these were coxes that were (trying) to row. Explains a lot.
I’m a new rower, and I’ve seen a couple of people in my boat catch a crab. I have never been in a race. I decided to research what exactly catching a crab is. I found this video helpful because it told me exactly what NOT to do.

In Australia we call them a cox....yes it’s short for coxswain but we NEVER call them a coxswain. In the same way a bosun is never called a boatswain even though bosun is the abbreviation of boatswain.

It’s actually quite funny when you know what’s actually happening.
It’s a good idea to get the coxes to row in a race...they get to realise what the rowers are going through.
I love this, we are going to try to get our coxes out in singles in summer but hopefully they will do alright!
Surprisingly the sloppiness made this very entertaining. I just started rowing with 1 ore after using 2 for a while
as a cox who has a pretty decent rowing form... this is hilarious

Man this is like if we had 8 more of my one coxswain and just gave the 9 of them their own boat. Between the cox not knowing if the piece is over, stern pair taking turns catching crabs, stroke seat just standing up in the boat, and the bow 6 just saying "fuck it, we ballin'"

Try to keep the oar always against the oar lock. Push a bit outwards to keep the oar there. Keep your arms straight before you catch. Remember arms then legs. Great job though

That's pretty funny. I've been a coxswain for almost 2 years now, and theyve actually had me row lightweight category, i'm bi-swepsual (row both port and starboard) for our lightweigt 4 and 8, and I'm a sculler. ive also been told by the team that im the favorite coxswain of 5.... I'm on par' with our slower lightweight, but im not actually the slowest. still funny to see other coxswains.

All good fun but I am a bit surprised how bad they are. They would have spent hundreds of hours in these boats and you’d think a natural curiosity would have driven them to find what it’s like in the engine room. It’s not like they were track cyclists or high-jumpers.
