Many people are so welcoming of other religions lately but Christians are demonized where I live it's annoying but God tells me to love them anyways that's what I do.

Between our religion being used as a political axe, horrible injustice being done in the name of the Prince of Peace, and the fact that many of us are really judgemental of others, Christians have done their best to taint the teachings of the Lord.
There is nothing in the world that has done more damage to His teachings than the ones professing to follow them.
That being said, we Christians are by nature flawed. Thus the search for redemption.
But yes it's awesome that Simon (who probably thinks it's all BS) is respectful of our religion. It is appreciated.

for a man who isn't a Christian believer I admire your courage. All the time people claim that the Bible is just a fairy tale and the facts presented are just fiction. When archeology proves that the Bible was right they just move to the next claim, without admitting they were wrong. You just give credit where credit is due. I admire that.
There are a lot more claims in the Bible that are simply objectively untrue.
The Exodus, for example. It is claimed variously that either two million or thirty thousand Jews escaped Egypt and fled to Israel.
The average human being produces right at 320 pounds of feces in a year. Multiplied by 30,000 people, that's 9,600,000 lbs.(4,800 tons) of feces per year, or 192,000 tons for the entire Exodus of 40 years given the lowball figure of 30,000 Jews. That's a lot of feces in the hot, dry and comparatively tiny Sinai desert, and we would expect much of it to have fossilized - but it hasn't. There has been no fossilized human feces (or anything else - camps, bits of firewood etc.) found in the Sinai.
Using the high ball number of two million we get 640,000,000 pounds (320,000 tons) of feces per year, or 25,600,000,000 pounds (12,800,000 tons) of human excrement for the entire Exodus era.
If the former number, you would expect the desert to have pretty consistent piles of human excrement found at regular intervals. If the latter it should be almost covered in it.
Nowhere to be found
Who does that? The books of the Bible were written in antiquity and touch on events of the day. Some they got right, some they got wrong, and some they made up.
I don't know why anyone, believer or agnostic, would deny that.
The Bible would not exist had it not been for the belief systems that preceded it, from sumerian to babylonian to assyrian to akkadian to hellenic to egypt to roman to paganism etc etc.
There are historical observations within the works, yes obviously, but even that is erroneously presented even when there is historical backing.

I never understood how a person can believe in a fixed system built on such flimsy pillars as that of the abrahamic theologies.

And with all its errors and mistakes and historical fallacies how can a person in the age of information and remotely believe this nonsense.

The flood story is based on much much older myths and legends which the Bible retells to the tooth but changes names and date and regions to fit its own narrative.
How many christians speak the old tongues? Barely anyone, how many christians can attested to the bible, none for none of them know the previous works, they merely go on blind assumptions.
Honestly I find the whole thing incredibly pathetic given the blood thirsty history of the christians and their murderous nature, no religion in history has been as sacrificial as that of the judiac religions none have also been nearly as destructive as the judiac religions.
And after all that bloodshed and destruction, entire people groups eradicated, languages lost histories rewritten in the light of the new themes religions instill upon the population, and after all that, people still have the nerve to say, "I need not to think for myself and I feel you should join me for else you will go to hell and be damned" well I usually tend to reply with "fuck off ya imbecile" and it usually works.

I saw on a program at least 10 years ago, archeologists did find a wrist bone with a nail in it that the archeologist said was of a person who had been crucified by the Romans. The archeologists said that the Romans knew enough about the body to know that the bones of the wrist were strong enough to support the person, while the bones in the hand weren't. That is why the Romans actually nailed the person through the wrist not the hand.
The ancient Greek language did not have separate words for 'wrist' and 'hand' which is something that caused a lot of confusion on this topic. Yeah, its believed that the nail went between the bones of the wrist but the Bible says 'hand' because that's the closest translation English had to the Greek word used there.
See Shroud of Turin . It shows bloodstains on the wrist and feet
I haven’t heard of the discovery of a hand, but there was a Discovery of a long, iron nail in a heel bone found. I remember growing up and this was atheists argument that people could not have been crucified. Are you kidding me!!?? It was there MO for major crimes. Atheists have since quietly backed away from that argument-like they always do-and moved on to others that have been proven wrong as well. The claim is always on page one of the news paper; the retraction is always on page 6. Jesus is out Lord and a Savior, come out of His heavenly abode to portray the ultimate price for His love for us, and even today people spit on Him.
They also crucified through the heels and not the feet - skeletal bones have been found proving this, knees were turned to one side and the nails put through the heel bones.
@Pat M I'm not at all convinced of the Shroud's authenticity, but it is interesting to note that recent studies on the shroud failed to find an explanation for the image's creation. If it was painted by some guy in the Middle Ages you'd think there would be plenty of ways we'd be able to tell that with our modern technology.

All good mythologies and legends have some basis in reality. I don’t see why the Christian mythologies are any different.
To paraphrase CS Lewis, Christ is clearly a corn-king like Osiris or Dionysus in that his dying and rising is representative of the natural agricultural cycle. The difference between the myth of Christ and the myth of Osiris is that Christ’s is a myth that actually happened.

If you guys are going to go down the bible path, I would love for you to do some series on what the bible says in Hebrew and compare it to what the English version is. And/or include what it was like to live in the time the individual books of the bible were written.
That's a very good Idea. And II Kings 2:23-24 would be a great example to highlight.

If you haven't done so, you should look into joining some digs. Many will take amateur's/volunteers. My grandfather (David Livingston) was a Biblical Archeologist and started Associates for Biblical Research (ABR). he passed away, 10 years ago, but he used to take volunteers (I was lucky enough to go on a dig in 1996). I'm not sure if ABR still does digs, but you might check it out.

Thank you for presenting this! I am Christian so I have a bias of course but I think it is important to understand that the Bible is not only a religious text but also the written history of a people. Of course with a religious outlook on life but nontheless a description of their time. I think the Babylonian invasion describes it well. The history is fact, the outlook on why it happened is religious. That doesn't mean that the bible will be 109% accurate in describing history but it is also not a book describing only the supernatural aspects of life. Another comparison might be the story of Troy which was long believed to be myth, however it appears the historical part of the story actually took place. That is to say the ancients were much better at keeping their history alive than we give them credit for.
The irony of worshippers declaring a book to be a history of a people, and using that book to condemn, torture, and murder the people whose history the book speaks of.

Over and over we find proof across all cultures and geographical areas that ancient peoples' oral histories are more accurate than we once believed. First and foremost the Hebrews considered their accounts to be history. The religious/supernatural aspects notwithstanding, they were meant to be factual accounts of historical events so we shouldn't be terribly surprised when the events themselves turn out to be true.
@Gerald H yes, but my point is that things presented as historical facts in ancient accounts very frequently turn out to be true. Whether the Hebrews originated them or repeated them, the basic facts tended to be conserved.

The term used to describe what King Uzziah was stricken with was Tzaraath....a skin disease that is said to be spiritually inflicted. Shows the inward spiritual state. Is definitely why he was chased out of the temple. What is noteworthy is that it says he remained afflicted until he died. Typically this is temporary

Studies in relation to the Big Bang and the formation of the universe has shown that the order of events are pretty much identical to the biblical creation story.
Mind, only the _order_ of events. Not the events themselves. As in, light came before matter, life started in the oceans, and that humans were quite late in the evolutionary race. Stuff like that, which would have been unknown at the time.

It seems likely to me that anybody tied to a cross is highly likely to be untied by their friends. A nail through the heal would be a dead give away of anyone that had been crucified, even if they escaped and survived.
Crucifixion is still considered one of the most brutal forms of execution. It was invented by the Parthians and perfected by the Romans 500 year later. Rome used teams of professional soldiers/executioners to do the job. They made no mistakes and nobody lived once it started.
Dr. Mark Eastman, a physician and emergency room doctor did a speech on Jesus death on the cross from a medical perspective, describing how the body reacts and breaks down. It’s a good listen to a horrifying way to die.

A neat channel to look at is Patterns of Evidence. The first feature I watch deals with Exodus but also goes back to evidence for Jospeh and slavery of a Semitic group of people.
I think the most important discovery of the past 100 years is Gobeli Tepe, the age of those monoliths is proof that forms of high civilizations may have existed before the younger Dryas which was as close to biblical deluge than any other natural disaster.

Yeah, OK, catastrophic floods are a thing... But think about what you're eluding to: the story of a worldwide flood where two of every land-dwelling beast was gathered into a single boat (that's 6.5 million species, x2 a male and female of each, 13 million individual creatures - utterly impossible). The vast majority of which do not exist in region the story took place. Did they all come over to the Mediterranean for a holiday? Then after the flood, the kangaroos hopped to Australia, pandas lumbered all the way to China and poison dart frogs jumped all the way to the Amazon and stayed there.
I mean, have your faith if you want to but this is just a fairy-story, written at a time where people had no understanding of how big the earth truly was, how many species there were, etc.
"Noah's Ark" isn't even the first, it's just the Hebrew version of pre-existing flood myths - eg. Ziusudra or Gilgamesh.
This story also suggests that the entire world's population is the result of Noah and his family repopulating, as everyone else perished, right? But with modern genetics we can see we're not all related back to a single family, less than what - 6000 years ago?
It's just a morality tale like any other myth from any other culture, nothing more.

@@thejagman22 It wasn't every type of species that went aboard the Ark, it was every "kind" of animal (which would be land animals and were probably young) and there could be maybe around 60 000 - 70 000 at the most that could have been in the Ark and they would fit with room to spare. 2ndly the Earth looked way different. The flood is what caused the continental separation and various geographical land changes like new mountains and valleys, new lakes and lands or disappearance of lands etc.... basically it shaped the world that we see today. I have calculated that that it would need a population growth rate just above 2.5% from 8 people to reach 8 billion and it would take about 6000 years (i know calculating growth rates is tricky with many variable and assumptions) but in simplest terms you would need that amount, which calls into question the millions of years the school textbooks tell us and for some reasons they always show for many years until around 5 000 BC if i'm not mistaken the population just starts to grow linearly but before that there was no growth at all for millions of years 🤣 that's the more fairytale than anything. Many tribes and nations from various continents recorded through out history and ancient history specifically the flood legends and some very close to Noah account which is fascinating and makes sense because people would have talked and passed the story of such a disaster from generation to generation and for most the story will get distorted - think there is about 100 flood legends. The problem with science and religion isn't what they are, but when we misapply their answers.
Generally speaking, the underlying purpose of science is to answer "how" questions, whereas the underlying purpose of religion is to answer "why"questions. This is always how I understood it.
So, if I were to ask you "How did you get to the store?", the answers would be like "in my car" or "down Main Street". If I were to ask "Why did you go to the store?", the answer would be something like "to pick up milk and bread".
The age of enlightenment split the previously intertwined concepts of knowledge and wisdom.
Throw the fact that even though the Bible and other ancient documents were written by people like you or I, and you have potential wrinkles of confusion everywhere due to the separation of time, language, and culture.
This is why I like Simon's stuff. He tries to get as close to the truth when he shares his nuggets with us.

I read an academic paper a year or 2 ago about a city that was found in the Levant that had evidence of being destroyed by a potential meteorite impact. Bricks were found melted and walls were blown apart but there were no signs of an invasion or battle. My university teacher had the theory that the nails were rarely used as they were expensive to make just to punish some thief or petty criminal. He said they were used for important people, someone some people might want to risk death to save them and cuts the cords. Nails could not be taken out so easily and rapidly as cutting cords. And their feet were rendered useless, so they couldn’t just run away. Like Jesus or this person in this hidden tomb. He said we would know if we ever found Jesus’s body because he would also have the hands nailed, suffocating his healing powers. Because as Simon said, no nailed hands were ever found.

Well, the catholics have 73 books in their Bible, the coptic Bible has 81, and the ethiopic orthodox Bible has 84. Even the KJV used to have 80 books. The Bible only tells you what the church wants you to hear.
The Bible wasn't written in Latin nor Greek. It's not a European creation. It pre-dates European knowledge of such. The books were written over the course of centuries throughout the Middle East and northern Africa (Ethiopia on upward). But it never started out as Christianity. It originated as something else first, then as groups move apart, it splintered into what we call Judaism, Christianity and Islam as different groups gained power. This is evident as all three share some of the Bible and recognizable names and how Islam gave form to the Sunni and Shiites with Christianity being an export from Judaism to Europe splitting into Catholicism, Protestant, Orthodox, Presbyterian across Europe and in America, it sub-splintered more to give rise to Baptist, Mormons and JWs.
@@nicholastime1513 Most of those "extra" books are peripheral works that came much later than the original 66. Usually they are regarded as interesting or even useful, but non-essential in terms of doctrine.
Also, please stop saying the Bible is dumb. It has a lot of amazing universal wisdom that would be useful to everyone, if only people were willing to actually pay attention to it.

Also, logically, a cross shape doesn't really cause asphyxiation, having your arms vertical does though, as you eventually cannot support your weight with your legs and slump, causing your asphyxiation by compressing your airway.

Truth is truth. You can try to twist it, you can misrepresent it, and you can misunderstand it. But it is what it is and it will always be that way. Perhaps if you are interested in actually knowing what is true you could give the idea of God and His word the Bible the benefit of the doubt and try praying to him and read some of it with an open mind. Wouldn't that be the scientific way of approaching it? Forming a hypothesis and then testing it out?
