My golden retriever named Willow is now a Tuck imitator! She always follows me out to the garden to see what yummy eats she can nab. She pulls the cukes right off the vines. I pulled about 3 of them off the vine one day and put them on the ground. When I went back for them, they were all gone in her tummy :).

I recommend a lettuce called Four Season. It is a red-green leaf lettuce. Here in Zone 8 NC, we “only” got as low as 22F last year, but the lettuce grew all winter unprotected. Hard freezes in the 22-25 degree range did nothing to it. Same thing with Red Russian Kale. Bulletproof. It’ll grow all winter unprotected and survive dips into the teens at night. If you’re in a zone that dips into the teens, just toss a frost blanket over your bed. Colder than 15F or so and you’ll benefit from a hoop house.

The ease and speed of growing radishes have made them a staple food for me. I used to think I didn’t like them, but then I started cooking with them differently. Roasted in the oven with garlic and herbs is amazing, and they can be cooked up in soups/chilis, added to hash, and of course salads. If you let some keep growing, they get potato sized! Seed saving is extremely easy. I plant them thick, and when I start thinning a few days later I add the delicious greens to everything.

I planted radishes in late May, they look pretty & healthy, but I don’t see any radishes showing at the top of the soil, sticking up. I pulled the green leafy part up, but there’s no radishes under the soil. They’re in a flower bed that’s in shade until noon. Why aren’t there any radishes yet?

    • @SK-lt1so
      @SK-lt1so Před 3 lety

@@jonihughey1352 Sounds like you need more sun.
Try putting some seeds in a pot and move them to the sunniest part of the yard. Potted plants need to be watered more often.
      See what happens.
I've grown good radishes in pots.

James, you didn't mention beets as a cold hardy fall crop. I've had mine planted for two weeks now and they are doing well. Beets and carrots can be left in the ground well into winter if you mulch them with straw after they get bigger. Idaho winters in the "banana belt" region aren't too cold either.

I wasn't going to plant carrots again because I couldn't eat all that I grew last year and this spring, but I learned something here. Fall carrots develop the sugars that make them sweeter and better. Besides, Tuck can't be wrong about how good and satisfying it is to munch on a fresh picked carrot in the garden. Thanks for helping me get back on track with that!

I live in a zone 4b area up north and have a super short growing season that doesn’t get that hot in the middle of summer.
Last year I found a $40 moveable mini green house on amazon, and I grew yellow heart winter choy and some lettuces on my deck. I did have to gear up and go outside after heavy snow to swipe several inches of snow off the top of the greenhouse so the sun could get through but IT’S POSSIBLE! And cheap!
I reused that old mini greenhouse on a raise bed in late Feb when it was below freezing until early May when it reached highs of 50F. It defrosted the soil enough to sow winter hardy seeds and I watch for slow germination and slow growth until the weather warmed up enough. I had to weigh down corners with bricks and even then it blew away a few times in super windy storms.
But the $40 mini greenhouse is surprisingly resilient! I plan on using it again this late fall/winter. I bought a backup for when that one falls apart.

Thank you James! My first predicted frost is Nov. 14 in Northern California. I’m planting short crops like crazy. Soy beans, light red kidney beans. I put in new watermelons because we love unending watermelon. Cucumber, mustard, onions, cherry tomatoes, Swiss chard and cauliflower are all in.
I have several different radishes and I forget what else. I have kale, spinach and lettuce going already.
We must have had a record heat wave in Northern Cali but thanks be to God it has only hindered my harvest. I’m still going to have a crazy mad harvest of tomatoes, squash, pumpkin, chia and different beans.
You keep me inspired James. I’m working on a food Forrest and seed bank for my grandchildren. I’m 62 and me and my little ankle biters are having a blast gardening, growing the food Forrest, growing food, EATING the best food of my life and staying ahead of the heat. ☀️
Take care! You and the Tuck household be blessed in Jesus name!

This channel has inspired me to start my own fruit forest and raised gardens. Summer is my busiest time at work but I get out in the the back yard almost everyday to get ready for next year. I hope to have the wood chips in soon so I can plant some fruit trees this fall. I lost my dog Tucker this winter so I love to see your Tucky in the videos. Thank you, James for your energy and enthusiasm. Give Tuck some love from me.

Yo James! Try Lacinato Rainbow Kale (bred by Frank Morton), it's super cold hardy and has the nice Lacinato flavor and texture. The list looks great! I would have to add #13, Beets! You can eat the leaves of Beets & Radishes, excellent thrown in a frozen fruit smoothie. Thanks for the heads up! 🙏 Hope everyone's garden is abundant in 2020 🌻

  • @UrbanGardeningWithD.A.Hanks14

Don't forget Brussels sprouts! A winter harvest is much sweeter than planting in Spring, for the same reason as carrots et al. Good list though.

James, I love your channel! Have you done a video about changing seasons in the garden, crop rotation, etc? I'm interested in how you keep track of wat to grow, when. Thanks!
