Businessman Purchases a CASTLE To Prove Everyone Wrong | Dragons' Den

- James Brown's story starts at the age of 5 when he first visited a Castle... since that day he's ventured to own one himself. James is seeking £80,000 in exchange for an 8% equity stake in 'Baltersan Castle' - he plans to sell timeshares to people keen holidaying in the highlands but do the Dragons see James as a drinking buddy more than a business partner?
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Its a shame Touker wasnt there as at least the guy would have got office space in London.
It's frankly a sad story - the man grew up poor, saved up, took some debt, invested 125.000 pounds to get a futile project off the ground. He would have been better advised to buy small AirbnB/rental properties over the decades since this is part down his alley and would have been easily financially feasible if he started in the 1980s. If he managed to scale that, then he could have built himself that caste with the proceeds of his successful business and would be living happy as a clam in his own castle by the time he came out on the Dragon's Den. It's frankly a sad story of a lost life dream - possibly also a story of how he wiped out his meager life equity as well.
MrBourchakoun some people are just dumb or made for failure
true and the problem is that you don't become wealthy investing based on emotions so I can understand nobody invested because it's clearly a bad investment even if he manages to build a dream castle. You can buy dream castles for like a million dollars in France with huge propreties but because the maintenance costs are also about a million per year nobody wants them, it's only liability.
@@IamGragon666 I think dumb is a bit harsh, he is a dreamer with fantasies abound and no one in his life daring to tell him he is being foolish. Rather than having life lessons being a reality check he dives head first into the imaginary and tries to see it to the end. He is a romantic at heart, a poet...but not a scholar nor a realist...there is something to be admired about that.
Bit harsh. Its just money. At least he pursued his dream. I agree with the original statement, perhaps there would be a smarter way to accomplish the dream but I aint going to knock a man with a vision. There is reward in the journey not just the destination
Frankly.
Whenever a pitch has come in with a poster on an easel, it has never gone well. Whenever your idea is so crazy that all you got is an easel to show, that says all there needs to be said.
He kept it like that for about 15 years then tried to sell it 2017.
Mark S What’s he gonna do, being a castle into the den 😂
Shame seemed like it was his a real strong motivator for him...people can take a downward spiral without a sense of purpose
but where's the other easel that shows how it would look restored, or at least another easel of how it once looked?
@@christopherbradley7149 that's the point. If all you got is an easel, then that tells you you don't really have a real business.
@Graham Barker There is no castle. It is just some blocks falling down. He owns nothing but some land. He has no business. So the easel is the indication of that.
How about making an episode of "what happened to" ... all the poor sods on this show?
That might not go so well
There is I called dragons den pitches to riches and it a mixture of people rejected and people who had an investment.
Excellent idea
elguitarTom Yeah, seems like no one invested in anything in the first season of DD.
This guy is one of the few I've actually looked up. He's been trying to sell this building since 2008. It is still a ruin.
Bless him, I quite liked him and hoped it wouldn't have gone this way. 120 grand is a fuckton of money for someone in working class Britain :-(
This show went out in 2005. The castle went up for sale in 2017 unrestored for £150,000 and the owner was the same man - James Brown. In 2019 he was still the owner, pitching the castle as a future music school plus holiday location. You can see from his record that he is sincere and tenacious, but you can also see that big money investors (and buyers) don't have confidence in his project. I have bought at auction a much smaller, neglected house and every job takes longer than I expected. I live in the house - I'm here now - so I don't mind the time I invest but I wouldn't touch that castle. It's very much a castle in the air!
Very interesting pitch and thanks for the background. How was your experience buying at auction?
It’s faster to say that he’s wasted his money

Sadly he passed away shortly after.
Mmm no he didn’t. This was recorded in 2005 and he was trying to sell it in 2017 for £150,000.
I looked this guy up, as of 2017 the castle looks exactly the same, it's still a ruin, with no walls or windows etc. And apparently it is at risk of collapse. The bloke put it up for sale at a discount price of 150k, so undoubtedly he lost a shed load....shame really
He bought the ruin for 25k and he tried to sell the same ruin for 150k?? 12 years has passed and clearly time hasn't cured his delusions.
@@mosc7pc2 i think it was mark twain who once said , shut up
He put it up for 150 because it’s not got planning permission/rights and he began rebuilding it. All of that cost him almost what he’s selling it for. anyone with his vision and a bigger set of pockets will swoop this up
mosc7pc2 he spent over 100K in planning permission etc, so 150K is maybe high but not completely ridiculous
Shame
The castle was never finished. The owner from the clip listed it for sale in 2017

"But it's just a ruin."
"Ahhh. Yes. Thank you"
Duncan: Apart from the castle, what have you got?
James: Do you see the fence here?
You'd think a Scotsman would know better than to walk into that one
Pardon my ignorance good sir, but why is the fence comment funny? Unfortunately idk Scottish history
@@BufoOnTheBeat Its only funny in the sense that he is acknowledging that he has added next to nothing of value that can be seen visually.
He is well aware of that fact but rather than attempting to deny it, he chooses honesty to disarm Duncan by purposefuly making a joke of it... rather than 'walking into' what would have been a swift rebuttal from Duncan.

- scary experience with ghosts
- medieval festivals

As of September 2020, the castle is for sale, and in need of restoration
Baltersan Castle, near Maybole in Ayrshire, was built in 1575 with the semi-ruined property “ripe for restoration,” according to owner James Brown.
Mr Brown, a marketing manager from Ayr, bought the castle in 1992 but his hopes to turn Baltersan into a private residence club, with five bedchambers and a grand banqueting hall, never materialised.
from the title I thought this was going to be a businessman heckled into buying a castle during his pitch to prove the Dragons wrong 😂

15 years later this castle is still a ruin with zero restoration done to it, in fact, it's now in worse condition. This guy paid £25,000 for it but he now has it for sale at £150,000 😲

@@loveiscontrol6123 - No, he said he spent 120k on architectural plans for how he wanted the restoration. That's not investing it into the castle, the castle is still untouched, so it's maybe worth a little more than he paid for it but not 125k more, he is dreaming.
Would cost a million to renovate a castle. Scotland 's freezing . No hot water. Be like staying in a barn. I'm out
Absolutely
This is just kind of sad..
This castle was still up for sale in 2017 for a cool £150k, so if anyone wants to buy a load of bricks in the middle of nowhere......look no further 😂
Honestly... I would. If it were 150k with no strings attached. Unfortunatly its "pay 150 for some bricks... also if you move a brick you get sued for destroying historical property"
The castle isn’t in the middle of no where it’s a mile if your lucky from a town plus just beside it sits Crossraguel Abby owned by historic Scotland both sitting on the a77 a very busy main road and the route to Turnberry hotel
Wonderful guy, deserves a deeper look, to see what planning permissions etc he actually holds
Even if this castle is never restored he can still make money, there's a lot of historic interest and he could do research into the site and charge a small fee for tourists plus licensing on photos and drawings of how it looked etc. And if it does restore it gradually, that could be turned into a TV series would be quite interesting to watch.
Looked up baltesan castle on google. This episode is from 2005. Nothing happened to the castle. I would have loved it for that guy to pull it off.
Shame after the 15 years its still untouched, was hoping he’d go far, seemed like a decent bloke
I love castles, too, and will always fondly remember visiting some in Edinburgh, Quebec, the Italian countryside, etc. If I was loaded, my husband and I would have a mini replica built on one of the better streets in our city. And it would absolutely be my 'baby'. I would never walk away from it, not without major qualms and only if I HAD to sell it. So I don't believe him. And he's drastically underestimating costs of repairs, wiring, plumbing, furnishing, post-winter maintenance, etc. I felt bad for him, and cringed quietly.
I want to learn to be like this man. How he handles adversity (effectively rejection in this case) with such grace, charm and resoluteness.
