I love the fact that there was a classicist composer who incorporated guitars into his pieces. It's truly exquisite! What an innovator! All hail Boccherini! :-)
I admire Haydn and Mozart a great deal, but my heart is with Boccherini! Being Latin myself, I find Boccherini, as I find Vivaldi, as an exemplary representative of "Latinity": full of a joy for living, colorful, rich in subtleties and nuances, sometimes melancholic (but never nostalgic), poetical, elegant, with an impeccable sense of "buen gusto", light-hearted, sunny, and so many other beautiful things.
Hermoso......
***** Thanks! Glad to know you also enjoy Boccherini!
Ibis Sanchez-Serrano Sehr gut dargestellt.
Jose Carlos Serrano Sanchez Thanks, quasi tocayo! ;) I agree with you! I always debate this issue with my friends musicologists and musicians. German music owes a great deal to the Italians, in particular Corelli, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Porpora, etc. By the time of Haydn and Boccherini, Vienna was culturally an Italian colony. The same with Dresden during Vivaldi´s time. No music can match the Italian´s sense of melody, subtlety, joy, lyricism, and color!
+WA_rocks Really? Are you jealous of the Latins? By the time of Haydn, Vienna (and Austria, in general) was actually an Italian colony, culturally speaking. And composers such as Haydn and Gluck (and Mozart) owe an enormous deal to the Italian composers such as Vivaldi, Porpora, among many others, who were the true innovators. And there is no better example of Germanic indebtedness to the Latin one than the Bach-Vivaldi case, not to mention that one to Corelli. Even if you do not like Vivaldi or Corelli, this is something you cannot deny, simply because it is a more than proven fact! Read some music History if you want to argue! I can provide some excellent bibliography, musical examples and scores, if you want to pursue it!
The first five minutes was all it took for me to want to hear this in its entirety. This is beautiful from start to finish.
What a wonderful group of comments there are on this page ; for the most part, so civilized, sensitive and Intelligent, akin to the music itself. I'm sure Boccherini would be grateful for the recognition and praise given him here . A few points about Boccherini for those who know little of him. He was, in his own era, as well renowned as both Haydn and Mozart, more often than not, more highly praised and recognized than was Mozart. Beethoven in his early life (when Boccherini was still alive) referred to Luigi as the " greatest living Composer". He was "the Composer" who introduced the string Quartet to the World at large (and not Joseph Haydn, as is so commonly and ignorantly claimed). He was one of "the great innovators and most original geniuses of the whole 'Classical Era', in fact one of its founding fathers, along with Haydn, Vanhal, and many others who have been equally ignored by music historians, and critics. The complete Corpus of his work displays a breadth and depth of creative invention, originality, variety, depth and foresight which few composers have ever equaled. Hence Haydn's recognition of Boccherini as a Genius in his time. The String Quintet as demonstrated here was Boccherini's own unique "specialty", created originally out of practical necessity during his tenure in Spain. Every significant composer of consequence, during the mid-classical period (circa 1762-1790) "borrowed" from Boccherini , due to his innovations, especially in the String Quartet and Quintet productions of the time. He is "The Father of the" Classical String Chamber Ensemble": with respect to the quartet and particularly the quintet: no other composer came close to equaling Boccherini's output, or the overall quality of innovation and originality in this field, Haydn and Mozart included.Neither of which two's Quartet outputs equals Boccherini in depth and imagination. You can find, throughout the very large body of his Chamber music, elements of the Baroque, Rococo, Gallant, Classical and Romantic Styles. His music often foreshadows even Beethoven's late Chamber works, and clearly Influenced Beethoven's Second Symphony: it is full of Boccherinian elements. [and at times even Schubert's style "appears" in Boccherini's works]. Beethoven utilized many of Boccherini's innovations, and his unique individual, non-conformist "style", being a mark of Beethoven's great output also, e.g., Beethoven's Opus 127 String Quartet, final Allegro is a "borrowed tribute" to Boccherini throughout the entirety of the movement. The latter non-conformity being a thing Boccherini is often criticized for by today's armchair "music critics: and simple minded "theorists": There are very few individuals (as experts) who have taken the time to explore the full body of his work, which is very large. His musical output has been completely misrepresented as being essentially "light", dainty and feminine, yet you find hundreds of passages, and many, many dozens of movements that display the strength vigor and power of a Beethoven: And Boccherini embodied Refinement and Grace like no other classical composer: in this He is unsurpassed; and which taken as a whole provided a "blueprint " for much of what is the now commonly recognized "Classical and Romantic", "style" "feel" and "signature"; certain elements of which Boccherini was the principal innovator. There have been no serious major studies of his Life and Works, other than cataloging, and a couple of books . But that's it more or less, but there is (justly) a Boccherini revival underway today, and some serious study of his Work currently underway. The listening public at large have been somewhat duped, or even brainwashed, into "thinking" that, "Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven", are "It" as far as the classical era is concerned , and, that these three originated virtually every major element of the classical style, which clearly was not the case, as this was a "group and time specific phenomena", that involved the contributions of hundreds of composers, publishers, copyists, performers and many many more. Mozart being the "poster boy", and darling of the high classical period, is often given the credit for "all" the labor, devotion, innovation and uniqueness of that particular period, yet ironically, Mozart didn't innovate a single major element of the Classical Style; not one! These were all in place when he reached both physical and musical maturity, in his early to mid twenties. So public "perception" itself has much to do with Boccherini's "neglect". As for myself, I find Boccherini's works, especially his Quintets, to be the highest expression of the Classical Spirit, in its most "intimate and personal voice" , an "expression of the beauty of the living Soul of Luigi" being reveled in dynamic sound and joyous bursting energy, that covers the full range and expression of human grace, tenderness , nobility, pathos, empathy and devotion, in giving voice to a higher truth,, and a more noble and compassionate ideal, "exquisiteness, power, energy and refinement personified". Gratzie Luigi...
...Wow !...your comment is a precious thing indeed !!!....Thank you very much !!!
Yeah, you're just bloviating.
Boccherini has to be the most underrated composer. His music is fabulous but he never gets the recognition he deserves.Perhaps because he did his work in Spain, not Germany or Austria.
"Perhaps because he did his work in Spain, not Germany or Austria."........interesting opinion . fortunately ie who was an Italian .......
The Italians' prowess in music was well known all over Europe. For example, the choice of Salieri over Mozart as court composer. But still, it would have helped Boccherini to be working in music capitals of Europe such as Vienna or Munich.
Janak Varma
Boccherini had orders to sell his music from all Europe when living in Madrid or in the country house of Osuna duchess. Considering that in that time having good connections in Spain meant you had a straight access to all America market or the southern half of Italy, Napoles kingdom, that was a rich and a major musical center in that time, I don´t know how it would helped him living in Munich. In fact, it was only in Spain he had permanent jobs. When the bear is dead, everbody is a good hunter.
Boccherini is one of my favourites. I even named a character in one of my novels Alonzo Boccherini to pay tribute to him. His Cello concerto 9, especially the second movement, is my second favourite piece, second only to Bach's Cello Suite 1.

My more recent love for Late Baroque and Early Classical music has often been generated by my love for the guitar and mandolin.
What great music and playing,
Thank you for posting-John
*Wonderful concert ! A guitar lover/guitarist should enjoy this !*
*Eccellente concerto ! Un amante della chitarra/chitarrista dovrebbe apprezzarlo !*
whenever i thought about classical music i thought of it as sullen and dreary never so lively and joyful as this. thnx for posting it
i listen that when i go to bed for take a little sleep, its so peaceful but strong and energized too.
messer citrazzo... your selections give us the opportunity to be close to real, meaningful music , far from noise and you name it. Merci bien.
thank you. boccherini is exquisite!
Boccherini does it again.
My Favourite Composer bar non.
A beautifully stated sentiment. my friend, Je suis entièrement d'accord .
I have listened to many composers, but in terms of having theme flowing after theme, Boccherini has no equal. It is as if he does not know when to stop. Any effort to get into these pieces will be richly rewarded. His inventiveness is quite extraordinary. I am surprised that the final movement of the fifth quintet, which is my favourite of the five, 2:21:10 is not better known.
So special, like all Boccherini's performances.
Thankyou from the bottom of my heart.
This is a REAL treat!!! Like many, i tend to think of Boccherini as a sort of "second class composer", when compared to Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Tallis, Byrd, Schubert, Rachmaninoff and the boys - but this is WONDERFUL music: artistic, relaxing, cultured.... i'm happy i clicked on it!! Many thanks for posting.
J. Ross Mayhew "and the boys"
For theme inventiveness, I think he has no equal.
Luigi Boccherini embodies the Mediaeval ideal of beauty and living,he is very melancholic, but in his melancholy he has a kind of strength and a nostalgicval feeling for the years that passed away.He is sweet, joyfull and romantic. It is a wonderful piece.
Vivissime grazie
I love the artwork to these videos!
A while back when I was taking Call-a-Ride to Starbucks in Webster Groves, I was listening to this entire CD. Thank you for giving us the full list of the CD tracks!

Thank you for the wonderful performances you have uploaded. I heard the ending part of the Guitar Quntette C-durG-453 on WCPE years ago, and have ever since been wishing to listen to it again. I am very glad to have found it included in your upload as the last piece. It has been a great pleasure to listen to all the pieces of your upload.

Thank you for this amazing video.
Excellent moment musical. Merci pour cette mise en ligne.
My Goodness! Today I truly discovered Boccherini!
Incredible!
Thanks!
Great music and art combo
Thank you for posting it. Boccherini is not so well known by several people (with the exception of the Menuet nd perhaps the Fandango from one of the guitar quintets), but he was a great composer. I heard that he also wrote several string quartets of which relatively few are available to me.
just amazing
Gracias !
Astounding.
Music is fine. Painting is totally awe-inspiring.
Awesome
Incredible masterful, colored, passionate Music. A lost for people that only rely in classical music clichés programing.
Picture fits the music, great video.
Woow this is amazing 😘💗
Fabulous
This feeling in my chest could only be described as beauty.
such greatness was routine once. now it is a treasure, and the streets abound with a pathetic excuse for 'music'
LINDO!
la exquisitex hecha musica grs
Super. .
Superb. For those who love this music, We have just posted an interesting archive recording made by John Williams of the Guitar Quintet in D. Some of the quality is not 100% but most has survived the years! I will now listen to all the quintets with pleasure ... !
One of my favourite pieces of "European Art Music"
good shit!
+ForceOfWizardry in your brain
+ForceOfWizardry Don't use "shit", show some respect to the old classical music please.
Chill out
I one time listened to this while taking the bus to Starbucks in Webster and this would continue to run. But also in the days when Mozart, Hayden, Schubert, and Boccherini were living, when they would write a song for guitar, they would have mostly either a string quartet join in with the guitarist or sometimes a flutist join in.
Me corazón se inspira con esta música
What I particularly like about these pieces is they are not really guitar quintets. The guitar is one of five instruments. And it works.
This Music just doesn't get old - but I do !
1:35:00 really great
Agreed!
fandango
Non?
If you do not know Boccherini then give these pieces time. You will appreciate genius.
cool
It would be lovely if you would include the artist and date on the amazing paintings you use to present the music.
looks early 17th to me. It's like flight to Egypt, Christ less! ;)))

Grandioso compositor!! Este quadro é de qual artista ?
preciosa
Depends on whether you're talking about Boccherini or whether you are new to string quintets in general. If you've been listening to lots of string quartets and quintets and just don't like these much, that's one thing. If you are new to this type of music, it takes a while to develop the taste. Try Schubert's quintet op. 163 to break into quintets. Lots of strong themes. Also Brahms op. 25. Other works take a bit more time. The guitar is a nice addition here, adds a great timbre.
Hi, I'm new to classical music but I just love this SONG! This SONG is so good, just like that famous SONG by Mozart that goes _da, duh, da, de, da, de, da, de, daa!_ I just love SONGS like this.
Yes men
good
🎼 💚 💖
Jorgel...perhaps the feeling in your chest ..is not just beauty but the harbinger of that old demon...La Grippe....the flu'!
clap clap clap
