  • The Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, WV is the place to go to see Shay locomotives in operation. These geared steam locomotives were designed for logging operations and the like. They're slow but powerful.
This video shows Shays No. 2, 5 and big No. 6 in operation. "Big 6" is unique, built for mainline railroad operation, and is far larger than any other Shay locomotive.
In this video, I have focused on the men who run and maintain these machines. Without sealed roller bearings, central lubrication or long-distance fuel tanks, these locomotives require a lot of oiling, greasing and watering.

I went here a few years back. Don't remember a whole lot because I was too young. Would love to go back. Also, it's hard to believe that good ol number 5 turns 110 years old this year!!!

Awesome video! Would you happen to have any clips with Big Six blowing its whistle?

Ryan Seals Thanks! Sorry, but no video/audio of No. 6 other than what's in the video. Certainly no whistlefest like the show that 2 and 5 put on!
