Cass Scenic Railroad - The Assault to Bald Knob

Cass, West Virginia is widely known as one of the 'must see' places for true logging Shay action. I had never been to Cass before, and due to their 50th anniversary falling on a weekend, I decided to make the trek down there (a LONG one) to see what it was like. Words are unable to describe the amazement, sounds and power these Shays have. Lucky for me, I was able to ride behind a pair of Shays as they tackled the sometimes nine percent grade along the trip all the way to Bald Knob. Even though it was rather cloudy, the expansive view from the top of the grade is breathtaking. This video takes you on a ride all the way to top of Bald Knob, with a brief stop at Whittaker Station. You'll see the engines steam up the grade, take on water during a summer shower, and get up close and personal with these truly amazing machines. If you haven't gotten the chance to experience Cass, I highly recommend you take a look into it. You cannot find this kind of action anywhere else. So, sit back, turn up the volume and enjoy the sounds of thrashing gears and steam whistles while you watch vintage Shay locomotives of the Cass Scenic Railroad assault the grade to Bald Knob!

Nothing is more beautiful than the 6-chuff beat (still 3 cylinders) of a Shay working up the mountain, paired with a whistle quill that is only used at Cass. I love Cass and West Virginia!

I had the opportunity to visit Cass a few years ago. It was a wonderful trip and I've been wanting to get back there. This video is DEFINATELY a motivator. Awesome!!

It was Awesome, I rode Shay No. 6 in early October of 2011 to Bald Knob. I highly recommend this ride. My best memories are from this trip to Cass and also to the Durbin and Greenbrier Rocket. 2 trains in one week
