Going Undercover With Neo-Nazis | Aaron Bastani Meets Julia Ebner

  • Since 2016 we’ve seen mainstream politics has taken a turn for the weird, epitomised by the surprise success of populist projects like Brexit and the election of Donald Trump. And fringe views have continued to muscle into the middle ground, with conspiracy theories and far-right talking points trickling into political discourse.
    Julia Ebner has been charting this shift through her undercover work for years, infiltrating neo-Nazis, jihadists and Covid-sceptics to find out how ideas spread, as detailed in her books Going Dark and, most recently, Going Mainstream.
    She joins Aaron to talk about how sceptics become extremists, the prospect of a “digital middle ages” where facts no longer matter, and what it was like to be on the receiving end of Tommy Robinson’s hate campaign.

      As a librarian and bookworm, from a working class background. You can never have too many bookshelves. An older Librarian said to me, its not the book in a big library you've been told you should read. It might be the dusty one next to it. You never no what you might find, and make your own mind up. Don't be spoon fed. That stuck with me.

    Centre ground politics. I'm instinctively wary of. I remember the late Tony Benn prophetic warnings about it being a gateway drug for reactionary views and how it is not progressive at all. In fact, can be very dangerous. Cloaked in reasonableness, fairness & respectability. Plenty of examples throughout history, when centrism, has ended up smothering reasoned dissenting voices, true democratic processes and debate. Labour was once lauded as the party of protest. We seem to have no home for the disaffected and disadvantaged other than centrism, economic liberalism or the likes of Mr Tate, and Mr Trump right now. Scary.

      Centrists have always tended to support the far right, even if they don't agree with the ideology in its entirety, until it's far too late.

    • @tancreddehauteville764
      @tancreddehauteville764 Před 10 měsíci +7

      The problem is that centrist politics supports the maintenance of the status-quo, i.e. it is a fundamentally conservative political stance, irrespective of the fact that the actual Conservative Party is positioned to the right of centre. Therefore, Labour centrists like Blair and now Starmer, are, in effect, advocating a conservative standpoint on most issues.

      @WarrenPeaceOG Před 10 měsíci +3

      @@valq10 I think there's a lot more outright lies. We seem to disagree on degree. Example: official Venezuela stories are a complete inversion of reality. Also, I've seen Guardian examples where it says, Corbyn said "We must X, Y and Z" and if you click the link to the source, you get Corbyn saying, "We must NOT X, Y and Z." But people don't click thru, as you suggest. Similarly, headlines often contradict articles, and a majority of people only see headlines. During the Corbyn era, the entire British media lied so much I permanently filtered them out. Guardian is still running the impossible Manafort-Assange article.
      I notice I am thinking more in terms of propaganda than conspiracies, like Uighur Genocide or Tiananmen Square Massacre. I've recently discovered that much of my background knowledge of history and official enemies like Cuba, Russia, China, etc is as ridiculously untrue as when I was in high school circa 1980 and school pamphlets informed us cannabis would make us trans. Boys would grow breasts and lactate!🤣I was also fairly anxious about God and masturbating😇

      I think we need a more menacingly sounding word than 'nonsense' for these phenomena. I'm thinking of the one that would subsume the meaning of 'nonsense' but emphasize how dangerous it is. Don't get me wrong, it is nonsense, but what comes to mind when (at least I) hear 'nonsense' is one of those Lewis Carroll style poems, that are mostly inocuous and sometimes entertaining.

    This is true: there tends to be 'grains of truth' in conspiracy theories. To add, though: part of why those grains have such power in driving the crazy stuff, is that they tend to be truths that the mainstream avoids discussing (e.g. power of 1%er economic elites in 'democratic' processes).
    The mainstream needs to find the courage to discuss difficult truths, so susceptible people aren't drawn into the fringe spaces that do discuss them in radicalising ways.

    I'm somewhat sceptical of labelling generations as inclined to one side of the political spectrum or another. People (understandly imo) react against the pharisiacal hypocrisy of corporate liberalism. In a media conversation where that is called Left, some turn to the Right. What we have to do is make the actual Left case. Rosa Luxembourg's prophetic warning about the effect of class war from above unfortunately remains relevant: "we will have socialism, or barbarism".

    I do believe the main problem with masculinity feeling left behind by feminism is one of advertising. The enforced gender roles of traditional patriarchal society is what causes the ideas that: men can't have emotions; men need to be the head of the family; men need to be successful; happiness and comfort is for women, men need to suffer to be real men, and on, and on.
    Feminism, i.e. the push to remove the patriarchy, unspokenly also combats those things that harm men. But it has been unspoken for most of the time.
    The solution is to remove the unspoken part. Which I have seen happen, but it should've happened 10 years ago.

    • @bensanderson7144
      @bensanderson7144 Před 10 měsíci +1

      I disagree. The Patriarchy is a synonym for Christianity. Both are the same. Feminists would prefer the term patriarchy but in fact feminism was really smashing Christianity. Having said that, we are rapidly going back to a pre-Christian society, a much more Roman society, where sex becomes a recreational activity. The great irony of course is that feminists didn’t see this happening; most women don’t really want this kind of world. If you look closely, women want their traditional dignity upheld, their femininity, and they want to have children, and it must be said, they want to marry gentlemen. This appears to be a permanent condition, baked into the female condition. But we as a society will be dealing with this for the rest of this century. In the meantime, we are all going to be living as Romans, casual sex along the male pattern, an unspoken polygamy, a lot of single men and a lot of unmarried women that will never have children

    • @JhericFury
      @JhericFury Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@bensanderson7144 I have no love for Christianity, but Christianity did not invent patriarchal society, patriarchal society moulded Christianity to follow it's rules. I mean, you keep referring to the Roman empire as the "before civilization", how many female emperors have you heard of? How many prominent female Romans at all? None or very few, because they couldn't vote and had less rights than their male counterparts.
      You're also just incorrect about what women want, and what the point of feminism is: free choice.
      I'm not sure what you mean by "traditional dignity" and why you think it existed before feminism, but choice is main factor. Women used to be the property of their husbands, rape against a wife used to be legal, domestic abuse used to be legal, and women couldn't have bank accounts or work, so they couldn't realistically divorce to escape.
      I think you've fallen for a rather rose tinted, reactionary view of the past.
      It's also telling that your entire speech doesn't include any mention of gay, bi or asexual women, or poly women for that matter.

    I don't wonder why rich policymakers aren't motivated to tackle economic inequality. Sure, they may pay some lip service to some weak policy in order to construct a social image that they're interested in doing something about economic equality, but expecting a relatively rich "leader" to change the "system" (e.g., Trump or Sunak) that has become rich precisely because of the system that produces economic inequality ("the status quo"), is ridiculous. However, in a plutocracy, the public's democratic choices tend to be very limited (narrow-minded politics because it's being promoted by the richer group). Or at least, the general citizen only consumes the social media that promotes the status quo and attacks the "left". e.g., marxism, labour unions, etc. It's a monopoly and the majority have been disenfranchised (precisely because they don't have the money \ time to be social influencers. Any rich snob can buy their way into a plutocratic government where nepotism & buying loyality is how you get to the "top")

    I genuinely think younger millennials and older Zoomers were very left-wing but there’s been a bit of a split, possibly caused by the pandemic and new social media platforms which has made this generation more right-wing. I went to Uni in the North East after the pandemic and a lot of the students were acting like Twitter was real life, whereas I think someone a few years older would be able to distinguish between real life and online chatter. I also think a lot of the attitudes towards boys and men really made it a toxic environment which I fo think was pushing male students into the manosphere/right. I dropped out to study at home but these experiences have changed me. I think I’m more likely to have a negative response to someone applying collective blame onto men.

      I'm late Gen-X, and I can definitely see the pattern. It seems to be a wide variety of factors; some social, some economic, but mostly a response to their environment, rather than an active pursuit of conservative behaviour. I'm regularly around a university campus, and the visible hyper-focus on STEM-dominated career goals (right from First Year), could be seen as a sign of them de-liberalising, compared to when I was a student.

    • @nickstibbs1
      @nickstibbs1 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@SuzanneO707your age would slot you into the Gen X bracket, which is roughly people born between 1960-1980, but these are arbitrary parameters, and the values assigned to different generations shouldn't be taken too seriously, even if there are sometimes generalisations and correlations which make sense.
      In UK, there are clear economic and cultural differences between post-war period, and say mid-1990s onwards (eg. university fees, degree of nationalisation or sharp rise in house prices compared to wages).
      Boomers (roughly post WW2-1960) get blamed for a lot, but as you infer, each generation is not a homogenous group, and many oppose what the dominant group succeeds in pushing through.
      This notion of generational conflict has been stoked by media and pundits, and has a momentum of its own now, but there has always been some degree of enmity and difference between generations, as long as there has been change over time in societies.
      As of yet, Gen X have had a very low-profile when it comes to cultural analysis, with focus on Boomers, Millennials and now to an extent Gen Z/Zoomers. This is a historical quirk, and may change - ironically, Gen X were highlighted by a book by Douglas Coupland, which arguably played a major role in kicking off intense generational analysis. Most major politicians in UK now are Gen X, and many of the leading figures shaping the world like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Jordan Peterson are too. US is oddly going through a gerontocratic period, with first Trump, and now the explicitly old and somewhat senile Biden and Mitch McConnell.

    In this whole interview, not one mention was made of Hungary, which for many years now has voted in to office a party of national-conservative orientation. Some would yet characterise it as "traditionalist". The problem with the popular left in general, probably since the time of Marx and Engels themselves, is the almost complete and utter dismissal of the proven stabilising effect of the basic national-conservative outlook. This is what is often meant by the "silent majority" in the overall European political and historical context, and it's precisely the arrogant dismissal of this robust, yet ideologically non-confrontational voter base, which creates the vacuum for all kinds of extremists from the ranks of the masses (or proletariat if you will), whether from the left or the right side of politics, to exploit. But why honestly are you from the left so ignorant of the Hungarian example, which really happens to be the shining example for the vast majority of national conservatives, pretty much worldwide?

I have to say she seemed a bit empty to me and one of the least interesting downstream guests .. also Aaron’s questions weren’t pointed enough .. no need for piers Morgan style antagonism but there could have been a bit more questioning of her analysis .. think he might have been a bit starstruck 😂

    Great idea. Can't wait to watch it. I hope there will also be a "going undercover with neo-marxists" version as well. 👍

      Me too. Examples of neo-Marxism include critical theory, cultural studies, as well as some forms of feminism. Education rather than stupidity. Bring it on.

      Huh? You do realise this is an *explicitly* Marxist show... right?
      Unless you've got a definition for this "neo"-marxism, I'm not sure what you're getting at.
