Sailing without wind instruments is a bad idea, right?

  • We would love to get sailing to the Bahamas, but our wind indicator is broken! And sailing our catamaran without wind indicators is probably not the best idea in the world. Especially when it will be more difficult to fix from the Bahamas. So let's get to fixing ASAP!

Want more?! How about a little FAQ
    ❓Why Folsom Ocean Views?!
⚓️Because Folsom is Charles’ last name and it’s a play on the Johnny Cash Lyric "Folsom Prison Blues".
    ❓Why a #Catamaran?
⚓️Jes gets really seasick while #sailing and the upstairs galley really helps when we #travel.
❓You both work full time jobs?
⚓️Yup. Charles has a traditional 9-5 position as the Director of Customer Success and Jes owns her own business doing art commissions for clients. #WorkingandSailing
    ❓Where to Next?
⚓️We are not sure. Part of the fun of this #DigitalNomad #lifesytle is that you can pick your #adventures

That speed/direction indicator might be salvageable. Try spraying contact cleaner on the contacts. My guess is that they are corroded. Maybe the socket itself as well. I've noticed that Phoenix is definitely right there for the action. What a busy girl! Two cans of spray every boat needs is CorrosionX and Contact Cleaner. One protects electronics and boards from corrosion as a coating. Just don't coat until you assemble some things because it can insulate connections too. The military coats all their electronic boards with the stuff to waterproof them. Good job getting up there to the top of the mast, and not flipping out Charles. That takes guts!!

Great stuff. Love your vids. But please, please rig a second line to the bosuns chair attached via a different point on the chair or even better, a loop through body and legs.

.... Whew .. no cable pulling ... be interesting to see if it was just moisture ingress and if you can refurbish thus giving you a spare. Would imagine it is just a sending unit and and the computing is all done at the other end .. Charles I have no clue, just guessing .... seems you lucked out and got no little shrimps in your ears or did you don earl plugs for the bottom scraping .... sure looked like you had a fantastic day for a sail .... all the best for the new year and may this year far surpass your wildest dreams and expectations .... Thx for sharing Charles and Jess ... as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

Be sure to rig a safety halyard when you go up. And tie it to your chair rather than using a shackle.

The irresponsible twin scene was hilarious! 🤣
Just a little advice if I may....
the next time you clean the hull, you might want to make sure you wear a Diving Hood or something to cover your ears, to make sure no creepy crawlies and parasites get into your ears that's living on your hull. They can make you very sick.
I learned this lesson the hard way in Granada.
    Keep up the great work.

Jes - Awesome use of filming and editing to show your "party self" ! :)
Charles - Congrats on the "crossed-fingers" parts replacement fix. As a 37 year military electronics repairman & automotive instructor...I got to be honest..I cringed :). Was hoping you were going to go into the culmination of data you received from all your sources on how the system works, what was believed to be non-functional and what testing you did to prove the device was the issue and not the cable or lower electronics. Ultimately, your solutions was a success !...Enjoy and thanks for the videos !

I am cruising oceans as solo liveaboard for 7 years now - all that duration without wind instruments. So, unless I'm a genius, - rubbish, you don't need them. Some people would insist on having satellite weather too, prior to dropping their mooring warps. My observation: opting for cats might be the first step in the direction of going "soft".

Jess, I’m still laughing 😂 thinking about your split personality fun you 🤪. Great job, loves the content. Safe travels to the Bahamas 🇧🇸 Hope you guys are planning on spending sometime in Bimini. What Brand Bottom Paint you Have ? We have a ablative type that once underway washes off and Hardly any Hard Growth......Maybe Electrical Dielectric Grease on that connection

    • @FolsomOceanViews
      @FolsomOceanViews  Před 2 lety

Unfortunately we are well acquainted with the speed log failing as it gets clogged up pretty easily on our boat. And that means we may not know the true wind (but I can guesstimate pretty well) or the current, but thanks to GPS on many devices we always know our SOG.
