Dr. William Birkin was a virologist who worked for Umbrella Pharmaceuticals in the 1970s-1990s. The head of the Golgotha Virus research project,[4] he turned against the Umbrella Corporation after failing to achieve a promotion to its executive. The company's attempts to prevent an unauthorized deal with the US military served as a catalyst for the events of the Raccoon City Destruction Incident.
Sherry was born around the year 1986 to Drs. William and Annette Birkin, two virologists who took part in t-Virus research at Umbrella USA's isolated Arklay Laboratory. Sherry's relationship with her parents was strained due to their busy work schedules and, despite their early 1990s transfer to the Raccoon City Underground Laboratory in the industrial district, she was frequently neglected but still loved them. Her parents were senior researchers in the G-Virus Project, a eugenics project that oversaw the creation of Golgotha, a Progenitor strain they believed could be used to improve the human race. Little else is known of this stage of Sherry's life, though she was a student at East Raccoon Elementary and her mother entrusted her with a special locket for safe keeping, which was related to their research. As a potential security risk, Sherry's safety was important to her parents, who wanted her to stay away from strangers who could be after Golgotha.
Brian Irons was a Raccoon City police officer who served as its last Chief of Police in 1998. Financially-corrupt, he had intimate knowledge of the Umbrella Corporation's research in the city and received bribes to keep them from being investigated. He was killed by Dr. William Birkin during the Raccoon City Destruction Incident. - Hry

William Birkin is a fascinating villain. He's a sadistic sociopath who's killed countless people in the name of his research, but he genuinely loved Annette and Sherry. And the fact that he fought furiously against G's control, not only to protect his daughter but also to prevent himself from attacking Leon/Claire during the G stage one boss fight, shows that he was capable of feeling humanity. Too bad that it came too late.
Mia where on earth are you getting that he tried to stop himself from attacking Leon or Claire..? In g1 he grabs you instantly upon seeing you and slams you through the metal walkway.
Yeah he's attacking you, but he also stops himself during the boss fight and gives you a few free shots. If you look closely, sometimes when he goes to one knee William will use his left hand to hold open the giant eye on his arm so you can shoot it more easily.

I can be wrong but there is one thing that bugs me about it. Indeed William Birkin was a narcissistic genius. Even his wife tells Claire that they both were married more to work. He conspired with Wesker for an assassination and was willing to become a monster for mere revenge. He didnt think of his family then.
But suffering makes a man understand and sympathize. Maybe when he realized what he was becoming that his eyes opened to reality that it was far worst than his own expectations. He speaks morbidly in some moments like "help me" or "kill me" and even "sherry". He had two opportunities to infect her but only did third time it happen. It is only in time of suffering and purgatory he might have understood that deep down something remained in him that was humane.
Otherwise yes, he was a jerk throughout.
This is EXACTLY how I see it! Redemption is possible for literally anyone, but for the worst kinds of people, they NEED to pay for what they did first, most of the time through a taste of their own medicine, in order to realize how terrible they really were. Do they deserve a second chance? Well maybe not, but the fact remains that the potential for change is always there.

stage 1 of g, is a fight for the body while g is taking over. It's cutting off his part of the brain as it readies itself for it's actual head to come out and take full control. G2 is the end of birkin, he can still resist, barely but it would only happen if the new head is destroyed. G3 is when all humanity is lost and his motor functions. Its terrifying and sad to see how they really showed it in the remake. When the new head gets destoryed and he mutates into g5, you can slightly hear William. You have to look up the actual audio for what william says in his diffrent stages. You can slightly hear him, off and on, in the final stage before he gets blown up. It really bothers me how much people say that william isn't protecting sherry...He may be a bad father and husband, a monster, but the game shows he cared more about sherry then annette and in stage one, he DOES protect her. Sherry is not infected UNTIL the head takes over. He is shown fighting the mutation and in pain, badly, during stage one. Yes, g wants to mate with her but WILLIAM had control in g1. SHERRY IS NOT INFECTED UNTIL G2, WHEN THE HEAD COMES OUT...William PROTECTED sherry against irons. He easily could of grabbed her head instead and she gets away from him.

He was bad person who made a Virus capable of destroying everything, experimenting on poor people, and overall he always had selfish intentions.
The only reason he got infected was because he betrayed the company he worked (even tho they were bad) so a team of mercenaries was send off to stole the virus from him. He tried to grab his gun but he was shot and killed off by the team.
In his last breath he got really mad so he infected himself with a sample he has hidden, he turn into a monster to kill every single mercenary.
Now, he still was kinda there after turning into a monster but only a little. And, even tho we don't know the true intentions of the monster, he did save her daughter's life at this moment.

This seems to be a hotly debated topic, but here's my hot take...
William Birkin protected his daughter 3 times, and they were NOT motivated by reproductive impulses: 1) "defended" her from Claire (whom he initially perceived as a potential threat) 2) rescued her from Irons' clutches (whereupon he immediately buggered off, despite having ample opportunity to implant Sherry at this point if he had a mind to), and 3) saved her from Mr. X. It was during this final fatherly act that we see the last flickering flame of Birkin's former human psyche snuffed out as the G-virus takes total hold, manifested by the sprouting of a "monster head" and the permanent "monster vocalization" shift. We witness the precise moment where William truly perishes and all that is left is the G-monster who immediately launches into implant-compatible-host mode, charging the elevator, sending it plummeting, pursuing Sherry (while Claire is KOd), and catching her (off screen) to implant.
I always assumed that William did care for his family deep down. Sure he did immoral things and being neglectful to Sherry but when he was denied the promotion and knowing they were going to take everything from him, including killing him and his family, will called the government for extraction to get him and his family to safety. This show that William, while not being a good person did love his family. But in the end he lost everything by his choices. He lost his humanity, his work, his wife, and lost the chance to be a good father to Sherry.
Basically William saved Sherry so he is like the Anti-Hero or something.
Oh no, William Birkin is _not_ a hero by any means. He’s killed countless people in the name of his research. However, he felt genuine love for Annette and Sherry. This is just a matter of his love for his family being his only redeeming quality. Otherwise he’s a villain through and through.

Birkin felt the intense, horrific, and unimaginable pain that he put his test subjects through firsthand, and it's possible, while unlikely, that this could have forcefully implanted some form of empathy into him. He also tried desperately to protect his daughter from the monster he was becoming, in a last-ditch effort to give her SOMETHING other than neglect. I think it's possible that Birkin could have turned things around, had the story gone a different route, since his constant suffering, and his loss of humanity was the lesson that he needed to learn. He needed a taste of his own medicine (literally!) Not sure that he deserves/deserved a chance to redeem himself fully though.
