Haven't played the second one but the first one is Battle system definitely needed refinement because sometimes all it was was just a random mess and it was like maybe I'll get lucky maybe you won't maybe your energy will get drained maybe you won't so it wasn't consistent and that inconsistency could really f*** your day or you could get lucky and just completely demolish a boss with a couple of hits it's ridiculous and stupid how the system worked I mean I straight up just demolished the first boss while a regular enemy will just take me out with one hit

Anyone who said NIOH was too much like dark souls didn’t play a lot of dark souls. There are similarities sure but they are very different in style and execution and game place is massively different.

Its a souls-like set in the Sengoku period there is no way around it. Its funny because Fromsoftware themselves already moved on from the Souls formula and created something different with Sekiro, yet the other companies are still releasing outdated and obsolete clones like Nioh 1.5, The Surge 1.5 and Code Vein. I just hope that they pick up the pace next year.

Tbh, I don't really see them as very similar at all. Beyond the "bonfire" system, that's about it and both being action rpgs.
Souls was about the atmosphere, lore etc
      Nioh was about the action.
Both IPs are far from perfect. Hoping Nioh 2 fixes its flaws, which Souls had a weird case of just neglecting a lot of its issues over the series.

@@RJMacReady1 not sure if anyone answered you yet but I've played a small part of the demo
(As I only got it at the 2 days left mark cause thats when my PS4 said "hey check out this demo you wanted to try out that I waited till the last minute to remind you about")
But I managed to make it up to the big snake...which I hate...just saying but anyway to the questions
      1. Most weapons from the previous game are relatively the same which is good give a sense of familiarity but the new ones...took a bit of getting used to the glaive was cool in many ways not just appearance, the hatchets are probably my least favorite not for any reason in particular they just didn't..."tickle my fancy" but having an extra ranged method of attack isn't a bad thing especially when/if you run out of ammo
      2. I can safely say there are some returning enemies but a lot of new ones as well, which is very good otherwise those of us that played the first game would be running circle's around this one and that would be sad and disappointing
      3. Map design, no the area's I went to were not the same old repeat of the first game they may be *similar* in appearance (ie. Cave looks like cave castle like castle) but are not the same in overall design and/or layout as the first game if that makes sense
However take what I say with a grain of salt as I never got any of the DLC for the first game

It's only Nioh 1.5 to people who didn't like the first game. Not enough has changed for people to all of a sudden fall in love with Nioh's core mechanics if they didn't already like them. But for people like me who adored the first game, Nioh 2 is shaping up to be everything I could have hoped for. There are enough changes (soul cores, dark realm, and enemy yokai Ki actually mattering are my favorites) to make it feel like a sequel, yet it's not so different that it's lost its identity. It's precisely what I was hoping for in a Nioh sequel.

I really liked Nioh 2. Like Cas said, the new editions are greater than the sum of it's parts. They made the game so much more fun, to the point where I had played 40+ hours across 3 characters and was still wanting to play more when the Alpha ended. I can't wait for it to come out.
Oh, another small change that Cas didn't mention is that the spirit stat is gone. Spirit in 1 unlocked more stats on your guardian spirits as you put points into it, as well as made your living weapon stronger. Now, each guardian has it's own stat requirements for unlocking it's bonuses. EX: Needed 15 Str to get +20 fire attack. It makes picking a guardian that suits your build all the more important.

Yeah it’s basically Nioh, just more customizable and a little deeper mechanically with larger (and slightly more labyrinthine) maps. I loved the soul core system though. The diversity of the spells you can use and how ridiculously over the top some of them are is great. I mean you can call a massive bull/spider’s head out of the ground to eat people, summon skeleton archers to shoot fire arrows on either side of you, then transform into a demon and smash things with a giant flaming club all in one combo. What’s not to love?

I played Nioh earlier this year for several months and even beat floor 999 of the Abyss. Hundreds of hours racked up. And yet if you asked me right now what a ki pulse is or how the combat system even works, I would not be able to tell you. It's like turning on the tv and leaving it on because you have nothing better to watch. It's dull looking with PS3-era graphics and is an uninspired game with none of that weighty feel to combat that dark souls has. Sekiro showed how a game can be both fast and weighty. Nioh is more akin to the button mashing arcade style clipped looking gameplay of your typical hack-and-slash or even dynasty warrior blandness, with the added repetition of methodically having to do a ki pulse every few seconds like a robot. Now I remember doing the ki pulse I just don't remember what purpose it actually serves... The only thing memorable might be some of the cute spirits you collect and when you go super saiyan and unleash your living weapon when in a tight spot, which can get old after a while. The repetition is exacerbated by the lack of enemy types and even the cheap level design that reuses segments of different levels to create "new" ones. The grinding is never-ending as weapons and armor you find or craft will be outdated in five minutes and there are only a few attributes that really matter so the rest end up being trash, and they drop by the bucket-loads. It has none of the intricacies of the loot system in Diablo and is a poor imitation. So Nioh 2 looks like even more a rehash of a rehash. Like with Nioh, I'll probably wait for a big sale two years down the road before even thinking of buying it. And only as filler in-between better games.

Here’s the thing. Yes, I feel Nioh 2 is worthy of being called a sequel, and there are some very notable additions and improvements, and they’re appreciated.
BUT, I can’t say that it holds the same level of true advancement and innovation that I would typically like to see or expect from a sequel.
It undeniably feels, sounds, and looks a bit too familiar/similar. I would expect that from annualized titles, but not from a game like this.
But I enjoyed the beta, and look forward to N:2’s release. I just would have like something a bit more than what Nioh 2 is.
So much of Nioh 1 is reused and not altered in any notable way that It was noticeable. From sounds, to animations, to in game assets, all the way down to map/level design.
It feels like they’re playing it incredibly safe in an attempt not to throw the delicate balance of the game off... but it ends up feeling a little too safe and ultimately makes it less distinctive as a sequel.
I truly believe that if you took someone who had never heard of Nioh, and had them play both for one hour, they might struggle to label which is the OG, and which is the sequel.
I was calling Nioh 2 “Nioh 1.5” from the moment I played the beta. It just feels more like an amazing expansion than a successor.
Also I wanted to say that yes, there is a different feel to the actual combat, and it’s subtle... but I legitimately went back and played N1 right after the beta, and it’s damn similar.
And you’re right, sequels don’t necessarily have to reinvent the wheel. But some of the changes are kind of lateral.
Though some of them are welcome, it really serves to make things feel *different* though not always *better.*
    I

WarriYahTruth but it’s isn’t perfected. It’s improved. There’s still a level of “jank”.
And the fact that so many people are having the same conversation means there’s some validity to the question of if Nioh 2 has done enough.
And it’s not about it being a better game than the first, it’s about the where it sets the bar for a sequel.
And I’m sorry, a 3 year old game should have more improvements than subtle adjustments to the combat.
I still enjoyed it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not problematic as a product.
I also don’t know what Sekiro has to do with Nioh 2.

Like 90% of the skill tree is from Nioh 1. I get it it's cool when devs go for consistent combat systems throughout games but look at DMC5 for example, it took almost everything from 3 and 4 and added like a billion moves to the point where you ask yourself when is it going to end.

Nioh is great because of the faster mechanics all the way around compared to DS games, and even Sekiro, which is better with quicker attacks, blocks parry and item execution. But i also like the running jumping turning straffing etc than DS. DS still is king with story/world/giant bosses and secrets. But I give Nioh the vote for more enjoyment as a whole. Sekiro is too linear and just like the DS series titles, leaves entirely too much out of the game that u truly really do need to know or have an idea of from the very get go. While this is supposed to not hold your hand, and add a bit of mystery to the game and let u find out on your own, it is also pretty damn unforgiving and down right frustrating, resulting in making u have to get online and watch videos for every single thing the game entails so that u dont "miss or pass something by too early on". Same goes for boss fights. Dont wanna lose XP over and over? once again gotta get online and watch how to videos in able to progress. And to me, thats just not fun. Thats no diff than buying a 60$ game at Gamestop and also getting the 20$ strategy guide to go along with it. Why in the fucking fuck do i want to read a book, only to turn around and play it right after? Once u know what to do and how to do it and where to go, the sense of suspense and thrill and fun is gone. But if u dont tell us some of the most important bits right out the gate, then we have no choice but to search for tips and hints, which basically ruins a single player game when u do it enough times. I dont mind doing this for MP titles but for SP it takes all the fun out of it. Im primarily talking about my frustration for sekiro here more than anything lol, but what i am saying goes hand in hand with DS, and Nioh didnt have alot of this "need" to look elsewhere. If u grind enough and collect enough and get certain drops and rolls etc, u were going to be a bad ass. On DS and Sekiro it may not matter how good u are, some of the bosses may be beaten in 60 secs but thats in hindsight after u died fucking 50 times, OR had to get online and look for help to complete. I just dont get the point...anyhow sorry for my long rant lol
