It HAS to be related to the Dark-Dark fruit’s powers… we already know that it cancels out other DF users abilities when we saw Blackbeard grab and punch Ace and doesn’t allow Blackbeard to phase thru attacks like other Logia users since it absorbs hits and amplifies them. My guess is that since the Dark-Dark fruit can suck anything and anyone in he sucked out the power from Whitebeard’s body? Maybe he sucked out the “devil” from the Tremor-Tremor fruit into himself or maybe he sucked out Whitebeard’s own soul idk but more info is needed. However it seems 2 fruit powers is the max Blackbeard can absorb cuz he seemed to need a free hand to wield both powers simultaneously
