  • What are some things that you should know before visiting India? How expensive is India? In our India travel tips guide currency tips, transportation, hotels, safety, food and health. We share what we loved about India in terms of travel along with what we hated about India on our trip. Now let's explore travel in India in depth!
Official Exchange Rate = $1 USD = 64.14 Indian Rupee (current as of May, 2017)
Transportation in India (City to city)
    1) We highly recommend train travel in India over taking the bus
    2) Book your train tickets in advance online (we used cleartrip.com)
    3) If you don't book tickets in advance check at major train stations to see if they have tickets reserved for foreign travelers under the tourist quota.
    Local transportation
    1) If you're traveling at a budget or mid-range level you'll definitely be taking your share of taxis, auto-rickshaws and man-powered rickshaws.
    2) Try to know what a ride should cost in advance by researching, asking at your hotel or asking a local
    3) Be prepared to bargain as rickshaw drivers often try to rip tourists off
    Accommodations in India
    1) Hostel in India - can start as low as $2 to 3 USD and upwards
    2) 3 star Hotel in India - ($20 to $40 USD)
    3) 4 or 5 star Hotel in India - (sky is the limit)
We tried to book our hotels around areas of the city we'd be exploring by day and night. Staying on the outskirts means much longer local transportation time.
    Health in India
    1) Make sure to get all of your recommend shots and vaccinations before going to India. Check online or with your doctor to find out what you need to get specifically
    2) Carry hand-sanitizer and wet wipes to clean your hands and dirty objects you may encounter like filthy door handles
    3) Drink only bottled water
    4) Have Imodium handy in case you get sick to your stomach
    Safety in India
    1) Dress modestly (especially if you're a female)
    2) Don't arrive late at night in train stations
    3) Safety in numbers if you're a female traveler
    General Travel Tips for India
    1) Don't try to do too much or have too fast of a schedule (slow versus fast travel)
    2) Pick a particular region and don't try to cover all of India
    3) Mix up smaller cities with bigger cities on your itinerary in India
    What to eat in India
    1) Research restaurants online on sites like tripadvisor or food vlogs
    2) Only eat street food or at restaurants that are busy with locals
    3) Ask hotel staff or locals you encounter for recommendations
Budget meals in India can be had for roughly $2 to $5 in USD per person and fine dining get really expensive.
Things we LOVED about India(I love India)
    1) Incredible train rides
    2) Amazing attractions
    3) Diversity of regions in India (how different they are)
    4) Beautiful temples, mosques and architecture
    5) Great value in terms of what you spend for what you get
    6) The sense of adventure not knowing what will happen
Things we HATED about India (I hate India)
    1) Getting sick and having stomach issues
    2) Getting hassled by aggressive touts, rickshaw drivers and vendors
    3) Often not arriving on time or as scheduled
    Final Thoughts
India is one of the most adventurous countries we've ever visited as travelers. We loved our time there but it can be a polarizing place. Most people love it or hate.

India Travel Tips | Things You Should Know Before Visiting India Travel Video Transcript:
We've been back in Canada for a while now. And we've been editing all of the video footage we've shot in India and now that we're done with that we thought we should share a few travel tips for India and just maybe talk a little bit more about our experiences. So that is what our video is going to be like. We're going to be doing also kind of like a budget breakdown so if you see us staring down at our computers that is what we're doing. Yeah exactly and this will be a little bit different than the city guide tips we did because we're doing this kind for all of India as a country.
This is part of our Travel in India video series showcasing Indian food, Indian culture and Indian cuisine.

I went in 2011 for the world cup. I only saw a few games and spent the rest going all over the country east, west, north and south. As my first trip overseas I remember the first day thinking how am I going to handle this. However by the 2nd day and allowing myself to live the culture by the end of the trip I was sad to leave. Truly a life changing experience and one I wouldn't change at all. Beautiful country and people. Thanks India

India can be divided into 3 regions -> North, South and Northeast. These 3 regions are very diverse and vary from each other. In this trip you guys did some of the north region.
North - I felt you missed hill stations like Shimla, manali and Nainital from the states of Himachal and Uttarakhand. Punjab state in the north itself has a different food and culture altogether. So next time if you plan to visit north again, you can cover up these areas.
South - There are 6 states in south india with each having their own language and culture. You should enjoy the backwaters, house boat etc. in Kerala and then visit the temples in Tamil Nadu. Hyderabad is a great place to try the biryani and experience the islamic monuments. You can go to Goa for all the fun, parties, booze and beaches.
Northeast - There are 8 states in north india where around 200 languages are being spoken, which means the most diverse region in India. You can google and research which places you can visit here.
So in the end you can't have all of India in your 1 trip. Here each state is like a different country with its own language, clothing, food, festivals and culture. So before planning your next trip, research thoroughly and plan wisely ;)

Thats right India will never rule the world, because we don't want to. we aren't megalomaniac like the Chinese govt. most people every where are cool. your aim is to rule and that makes you more enemies. most people love India, while most people are scared of china. you might like that, but its must be very lonely. So nah... we don't want to rule the world, we wanna be happy and have freedom. freedom must be an alien concept for you i presume.

Sam and Audrey, I thoroughly enjoyed your India vlogs and appreciate and second your fantastic advice for India travel. I am a fellow Canadian and backpacked in 2007 for 5 weeks to many of the same locations you visited; Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, Varanasi, Jaisalmer, Johdpur, Udaipur, and Mumbai. Absolutely loved North India. I'm a bit older now and have kids and after watching your vlogs with them they are very keen to see India as well. I cannot wait to share the experience that India is with them. I have always said that you cannot recommend India to anyone that is not excited at the idea of visiting India, but if they are eager to go, I cannot say enough of how great an experience it can be. Loud, cheap, chaotic, beautiful, welcoming, fast, slow, frustrating, exciting, maddening and charming...each and every day.

I live in south India, precisely in Bangalore. I recommend visiting Hampi, Belur, Halebidu, Chikabangaluru (all are in the state of Karnataka), Mahabalipuram, Rameshwaram, Kanyakumari (the Pacific Ocean meets India ocean here), Puduchheri (all in the state of Tamil Nadu), Munnar, Kochi, Alappuzha (all are in the state of Kerala) and Goa. Andaman and Nicobar are the best places in India if you guys like beaches, it's about 1250 KM southeast from Kolkata. could be the super cheap destination if you compare the price with any island in Pacific ocean.

You really missed out the hill stations in India.. they are superbly amazing ... you don't have to worry about the warm temperatures there either... if you plan accordingly you could even get to trek the mountains in the Himalayas( which is one of the highest ranges in the world) ... & if you are a nature lover north eastern part of India(the seven sisters) is a must visit.. I went there with my family & few relatives (12 of us) & we absolutely loved it.. & as u said India is extremely cheap.

Wow! Such an amazing takeaway. You guys have nailed it in such a short span of time of your stay in India in contrast to what took me almost 25 years to comprehend! :P
Whatever you've mentioned in the video holds true. One needs to plan in advance (although it doesn't help most of the time) and keep a buffer for impromptu stuff.
I hope, people were nice to you throughout your stay. :)

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos I just found out your channel and its amazing. In this video what you have said is basically centered in the North. you have visited Delhi which is a very crowded city to be honest but a great place for experience. In the north there are places like Himachal pradesh and uttarakhand which are really beautiful mountain states. If you come to the south like Tamil nadu or in kerela you wil have a whole new experience. Its rather less crowded and sea based places.
Now the next time you visit India don't forget to visit the Northeast India. Its the most underrated destination of India with untouched hills, mountains, waterfalls and valleys. You will feel kind of in South east Asia when you are here. I bet you won't regret coming to the Northeast which is very less crowded till now but soon will be because of its gaining popularity.
there are places like the Wettest/Rainiest place in the world.
The biggest river island of the world is here.
you can find one horned rhinocerous here which is very rare and a whole lot more. Its impossible to mention here.

One more tip for you guys is to stay or travel with an Indian friend who lives in the city. They will give you advice that the commercial guides will not give. They might also have experience and knowledge about lesser known spots and they will be great at bargaining and getting you fair prices.

Actually you can travel in South India during from June/July. Travelling across the western ghats when the south west monsoon is in full swing is EPIC. You can even take konkan railway from mumbai to goa to start of the journey. There is also so much more you can see off the usual tourist destinations. Even Indians don't visit these destinations much. This was my epic trip couple of years ago. Mind you I have been to each of these destinations before
    Trip Route
Starts from Goa --> Dharmasthala ----> Coorg ---> Bandipur national park ---->Mysore ----> mudumalai national park ----> Ooty ----> coimbatore ----> Silent valley ----> Palghat ----> Pathanamthitta ---> Calicut.
I am not being biased when I say nothing has even come close to the above route in all my travels across the world. P.S. I like wildlife, rain, cool weather and bikes. Each destination is under 7-8hrs from each other so perfect
    Cheers

Foriegn money is something I have a lot of anxiety about because I'm super bad with math and transactions cause my mind to shut down. The complicated trains and hectic stuff makes me excited. It's good to know they have prepaid taxies. The health suggestions were very good. Luckily I've never gotten sick in Asia but I know I shouldn't let my guard down. Sorry for spamming you with comments. I am watching a lot of your videos back to back during the lockdown 🙈🙈 great and practical travel tips though👍. Few more if I may...take an uber or Ola. When you are travelling to and from your hotel, take a hotel taxi. It maybe a bit more pricey but is safer, especially from airport or railway station. Try smaller cities like Shimla, munnar, or southern cities like cochin, pondicherry. There you can go easy and stress free. Carry mosquito repellent. Save local emergency numbers on your phone on speed dial. Also, try to travel during the day as you have mentioned 👍

I've been watching your videos for past 3-4 hours :D
When I see vlogs of travellers from other countries, most of the time I wish I were with them to help them communicate, to take them to nice places and keep them from getting robbed by those tuk- tuk drivers(I've seen them charging 1000 rupees from foreigners where it should have been even less than 100). You could've also taken uber in the big cities. And a flight from delhi to jodhpur would've been much cheaper than First AC train and would've taken no more than one and half hour. Trains in India tends to get late in Winter due to fog. But I'm sure you might have enjoyed the sightseeing in the train.
I've lived in Rajasthan for more than 15 years, almost all of my childhood. And 5 years in Delhi. Yet I haven't visited as many places here as you have. I hope you had a good time here. 😊

If you wanna travel in train then opt for Rajdhani, Duronto, Shatabdi, Humsafar, Sampark Kranti series trains over normal express or SF trains. They usually get more priority, thus get less delayed.
If you travel north India in winter(December-January), then your train will get delayed for fog.
Trains do have AC 3-Tier, AC 2-tier, AC first class. First class is almost 2.5 times more expensive than AC 3-Tier.
There is non-AC sleeper class in most trains, they are almost 60% cheaper than AC-3 tier, but not recommended for foreigners.
If any problem is faced in train do contact TTE of that train, you may tweet it to indian railways.

Samuel and Audrey Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos I just found out your channel and its amazing.

Apart from Rishikesh(Yoga capital of the world), you can visit world-renowned conservation parks like ‘Jim Corbett Tiger National Park’ or world heritage sites like ‘Valley of Flowers’ and ‘Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve’, etc.

Thank you samuel and Audrey for this video it helped me a lot cuz now I want to go to india but for a long term maybe a month or two. There is still few things that I would like to know from you guys. I found on booking.com those cheap hotel rooms and dormitory shared bed which is not an option for me but they looked very bad and unclean. so how was your 3 star hotel experience was it clean enough. is there any insects or flies in the rooms? Is there street dogs or cows in the street? can you ride a bike like are the roads good for that? also, if i want to rent out an apartment do you think would it be cheaper. if you can share pics for the hotel and hotel room will be great. I really need to know how much can I spend in 1 month in India for a mid level but clean. Are taxis expensive. does food and restaurants look clean. I'm vegetarian anyway so no prb with meat but just the cleanliness. Also, did you guys stayed at Mumbai? if so, how is it.
