i love the way cassie goes from gentle and calm in her routine, to violent and desperate. it shows how far cassie is taking it to get nates attention and when she keeps failing, she gets more and more aggressive. shes stuck in a loop
She was taught that appearance is the most important thing for a women growing up. Her father said “you’re gonna be a heart breaker” so that explains a lot. Why she acts how she is, why she needs male validation so bad. And dressing like this is her way of showing love etc. she wasn’t taught different ways

I love the way that they portrayed how self care can also be unhealthy in a way. Cause she was doing so much stuff to look pretty. a full shower routine, skin care, massages everything, just for a boy who didn’t truly care until she looked like Maddie is pure art.
You can see how Cassie “imitates” a different character with each outfit change, some of which she knew had crossed Nate's path already and grabbed his attention one way or another.

The thing I appreciated about this was the fact that you can see the exhaustion of the routine start to weigh on her, and how the routine went from soothing and calm to violent and rough as she got more and more desperate. The camera following her rough movements, the music and the whole routine getting faster, and making the whole thing very anxiety inducing or visually upsetting with how harsh it is was a great choice on the teams part.
The whole thing without narration or the cuts of her trying to get Nate to pay attention to her could be easily disturbing and upsetting on its own, seeing her get so worn down and tired as she violently puts time into herself was upsetting. People do routines like this for self care, for their own mental health, the time, the soothing routine being turned into something so toxic was a grand slam for me. It really shows her priorities and her lack of self respect, there are people who do routines like this to look good for other people, but doing this so violently and dressing like other people to get someone who doesn’t care about you to even look at you for a moment is the bad part of this.
She doesn’t care for herself, if she did, she would’ve done her routine at a later hour, gotten more sleep, and dressed like herself and not somebody else.

im gay so i used to be friends with all girls, but one of my best friends earlier in high school (i've moved schools since then) was a girl who reminds me a lot of cassie. i haven't watched enough of the show to get all the similarities, but just in this clip i can honestly see every part of her. she loved a guy who was a known asshole who messed with girls feelings for nothing and probably had a new strain STD brewing on his dick, and he didn't even like her. she'd try new hairstyles, new makeup, new clothes, all hoping he'd pay her mind but he only did enough to keep her interested before he'd move on to someone else. he'd call her a whore behind her back and when she found out over text i remember she had to leave class crying. she was only 15 by the way, and i've never excused any poor behavior as much as i did hers because she was so unbelievably insecure. she was a little mean to other girls who were interested in the boy and lost friends over him, and a lot of the time she'd even ignore me because i just couldn't help. if she did talk to me, a good amount of the time it would be her asking me to talk to him about her as a guy-to-guy sort of thing but i never did because honestly i was scared to (💀).
i think the first clip where nate bumps into cassie and she starts crying is some of the best acting i've seen on TV. they put their self-worth in the hands of absolute douchebags and when they're not valued by them they get unbelievably upset. my friend cried an ocean over this boy, and i really don't think she even liked him. i think she just wanted the validation of thinking she could "fix" the player. like she was the ultimate girl who was so beautiful and perfect that he'd stop messing with other girls and focus on her. it's delusional, but she came from a home with a terrible mother who never let her feel good about herself. i cant help but feel bad for girls like them, even when they do awful things.
Cassie got daddy issues, seeing as her father walked out on her. So she basically does anything to get male validation; you even see that same kinda vibe when she was with McKay

Super interesting that at first, she tries dressing up like ‘herself’ to get his attention, but it didn’t work, so she then does a style that is really reminiscent of Jules, which also didn’t work. The final outfit is Maddy’s style, so she learns that the only way to get his attention is to fit into Nate’s ‘acceptable’ and narrow preference.
The fact dat she doing all that for someone else than herself is so heartbreaking, as someone that dealed with many serious lack of self-esteem problems i know how it feels but I'm also aware that it is our responsibility to take care of ourselves & make sure to value and prioritize our own health in all forms and shapes
