Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 3-2 win in 10 innings from Thursday, July 4 in Pittsburgh.
Cards took 2 of 3 from the Pirates thanks to Andre Pallante's splendid outing. What he's done as the number 5 starter is remarkable and we should be giving him his flowers for it.
Offensively, another lean day for the Cardinals but a few clutch moments ended up being enough.
Is it strange to see Fernandez and Helsley unavailable for that game Thursday after somewhat measured usage recently? Kittredge and King came through clutch in their stead.
Down On The Farm, a big day by a Double-A starter!

Ol' Andre is starting to make me feel pretty good as the fifth starter. Let's hope he's that guy now. We need the stability.
I can imagine exactly where this team would be if some of our young guys hadn't stepped up this season: Last place. Instead we're only 6 out. The progress continues.
I would love for everyone to start clicking at the same time, though. I do believe we will be mentioned with the top teams in baseball if that happens.

I think the wear on the bullpen rests solely on the offense. Us always being in these tight games is going to wear down our pitching. If every pitch is stressful, they will break down. Offense has to come to the table and actually carry the team sometimes.

Bernie said once that players don’t have “Clutch” genes. Perhaps not but some guys have clutch confidence. You have to have the talent to go with that. What would we do without Alec Burleson.

Andre has had an interesting 2 1/2 seasons. Great in the pen in 22. Terrible in the pen in 23. Starts out 2024 poorly in the pen. Goes to Memphis to stretch out to start and has been a really solid since. He's really picked the team up since returning as a starter.

The offense is back to being a concern. Arenado especially with the talk on Twitter about him not hustling down the line on that play. Oli might need to sit him down and say hey we are gonna shut you down until after the all-star break and then maybe that gets him healthy because something has to be up.

I agree with you about Helsley and wishing he wouldn't pitch in the all star game although that isn't very fair for him if he wants to go.
I wish the cardinals could acquire another arm that has past closer experience that can fill his spot when he isn't available.
Also I am not fully prepared to give up for Carlson but I think he needs to play consistently but where?

  • @markhastings7454

People should quit complaining about cardinals pitching. If anyone wants to complain look first at the hitting with risp. It is so bad that it’s maddening.

@@bschaeffer12It's such a catch 22, if Pallante is # 5 good, but you can't see the future. He was awesome against Pirates. I hope he is 5th starter plus what now to do with Liberatore gotta make a decision with him. SP or RP. I think you need to have more than 1 set of RP. I do think you have a player that was just called up, try him.

Great pitching and a bit of luck to have won. Contreras thrown out at third, mason not running home on the DP ball and Donovan not throwing in time in the 10 and allowing the runner to score from second were all costly.

You need hitters in every position except C, CF, SS. Great if you get a bat, aka, Winn, but these need to be primary defense. Harera would be great for a team that needs a backup catcher. When every hit becomes a double one way or the other it hurts.
I say the same thing as Seoni (sorry for spelling). Is there a stat that includes the bases that are saved on D to your offensive numbers? Those saves are as good as hits at the plate.

why trade herrara just bat goldy 9th so he cant kill the cardinals with his monumental choking with risp this year keep ivan H he is better clutch hitter than the strikeout machine goldy and double play he hits into every clutch situation ..it odd that when most players hit less than 123 in springtraining most teams cut that players playing time not the cards they bat him cleanup!!! and he has choked all year most of his hits and homers are when the game is already decided I would only keep goldy to bat ninth or as a late defensive replacement never 3 or 4 hitter if they do that they will win this division in a walk

Ok let’s keep it real . These pitchers we have each and every year they pitch the most innings of any starters . But the manager pulls these starts around seventy pitches Maybe sometimes ninety pitches but we have no pitcher who has a complete game I never Hurd after all these games played we don’t have one not one complete game pitched.. the manager has to do a better job . And then the relief pitchers will be ok

    • @bschaeffer12

16 pitchers in all of MLB last season threw a complete game. Only half the teams in baseball have a guy who threw one all of 2023. Complete Games aren't a thing anymore. Accept it.

That was my point the other day. Helsley has the most save “by a long shot” because most teams are not going to burn their closer when they are up 3 runs in the 9th and then not have them available in a tight game. I agree Pallante could be our 5th starter considering what we have. Libby could possibly be a 5th starter too if they would stop shuffling him back and forth. I think Graecffo is also going to be a pretty good pitcher for us. He has good movement on his pitches and decent control. He looked very good in his debut last week. He tried to over throw his fastball a few times and didn’t finish the pitches but that was understandable since it was his first time in the show and his whole family and friends were there. I just hope they don’t forget about him. The trade deadline is going to be very telling. I agree, the runner on 3rd should have gone home in that situation.

    • @stevesteve788
      @stevesteve788 Před 2 měsíci +2

Teams use their closer in 3 run games whenever they're available just like us. We just have the second worst offense in NL so never have 4, 5, 6 + run leads so he pitches is almost every game we win.
We need offense to give our high leverage arms a break with 4+ run leads

    • @jimg7318

@@stevesteve788 we must be looking at different games. I don’t see closers coming in with a 3 run lead in the 9th. Why do you think Helsley is far ahead of all other closers. He has been used in several games where we could get by without him and then he isn’t available in one run games.
