I keep the following finches in this collection Bicheno's , Timor zebra , Heck's Grassfinch, Gouldian, Star , Cherry, Spice , Strawberry, St Helena and Gold breast Waxbill's.
One of the best aviaries I've ever seen. I currently keep around about 20 birds. Just bought a new house with a massive garden so going to get more birds. Your aviary has given me inspiration
Cheers lads. Your comments mean a lot to me.... I've been keeping and breeding finches for over 30 years now since I was 13 years old. I've bred over 350, finches waxbills and mannikins this year from 14 different species with not counting the 78 in the nest still. I don't record them in the breeding register until they are on the perch. I mostly breed Star finches which is my true love, my Red headed yellow flighted pieds are one of my favorite's. This year I did breed a few parent reared Cuban finches, so well chuffed a first for me . Best regards Mark
Beautiful aviary.i want to build s large Finch aviary too so I'm doing some research so far the best aviary I've seen on CZcams good work man.really inspiring work
Awesome I got a planted aviary with mixed finches , new Zealand .,... Wondering how many finches in aviary and how much seed you give them and how often
This is so beautiful. I live south of Miami and would love to have something like this!! The only thing is the several hurricane watches and warnings we have every year, would upset the birds. (We would have to capture them and secure them indoors). Hurricane Andrew blew apart our Miami zoo aviary and was devastating to the rare tropical birds.Your aviary quite a wonderful place!!! I do have a large yard of fruit trees etc. and enjoy many Painted Buntings, Goldfinches, and other beauties Oct-April.
Hi the nicest aviary i have seen in a long time i will be able to sit next to your dog and watch them for hours I am a homing pigeon fancier been flying for 30 years i sit in my loft for hours and hours and never get tired of it thx for sharing new sub
I love the music coming from your birds. It's a wonderful sound. There is a wild population down the road from where I live, just north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. I'll take my camera down and see if I can capture some footage for you. I've got a small channel with some nice Aussie nature footage if you're homesick, or want to see some cool Aussie wildlife with little to no editing.
Hi Harry My gouldian stay out all year long and breed in the outside fight too in early spring. They have access to a heated inside flight all year which is heated to around 23dc all year round. They also have extra light for about 17 hours a day . My gouldian do stay indoors most winter days but if it's a sunny windless day they will go out side. They all roost indoors during the winter too.. Regards Mark
Eoin Fleming Hello Eoin If your gonna plant your flight with live plants make sure you select plants that has large thick leaves or your canaries will strip every leaf off your plants until their bare.
My birdroom is heated ,so they either roost inside or outside it's their choice. I do leave roosting boxes outside for them and they do use them very often. Gouldian finches like it inside but Star finches prefer it outside.
Hello, You can have an aviary for parrots built for you. Just ask a builder to use aluminium box sections and bolt the wire to the framework.Use natural tree branches as living plants wouldn't last long .Even if your parrots only go into the aviary for a few hours a day or just weekends. The benefits of fresh air, wind / rain and flight/ climbing and exploring the aviary with their toys. Even them taking a bath in a shallow container or water hose spray will only be a good thing to enrich your birds life...
Excelente jaula voladora y muy lindos diamantes, entre otras especies que poco se ven....te felicito por el esfuerzo!!!, Saludos atte desde la Patagonia norte Argentina
its people like you and amaizing avierys like this that has got me wanting 1 my self im in the process of building a aviery now. and if course will be keeping finches.. SPECTACULAR!!!
The dead wooden round tree part wouldn't harm the birds?? as it will develop small insects and stuff, and what bout winter what happens when it gets very cold at night or Raining very hard, what about in an extremely hot day in summer ?
That is a great looking aviary, I find it marvellous that you have put plants inside, it really helps give that natural look to it, and I bet it feels much more natural to the birds! By the way, I was wondering if you have ever bred any bengalese finches? If so, I'm having a bit of dificulty getting them to lay eggs. Since I have all the right conditions for it, such as proper dietary conditions (calcium, egg mix, seed mix), nesting places and peaceful conditions among the birds, I find it odd that they haven't layed any eggs! The bengalese finches are always very close together and seem quite friendly amongst themselves. I have purchased two couples about 2 months ago, and ever since they haven't layed a single egg, contrarily to other finches such as gouldians or even long tailed finches (these have layed eggs about a week after being purchased). I live in the northern hemisphere, and it's summer here in the month of august. Is there a reason why this is happening? By the way, I have found the channel quite interesting and have subscribed to it :)
I once built an aviary that was 6 metres x 3 metres x 3 metres because I felt guilty about keeping two budgies in a cage. I ended up with some finches, budgies, quails, and turtles (Australian Long-necks) in a filtered pond that was 3m x1m x70cm deep at the deepest point. The finches, and the quails bred in that environment, and the female turtle laid eggs but they were infertile. sadly.
How do you clean the floor with so many plants, I mean birds make their things all around and sure plants and the rest of the cage get dirty after a couple of days. Sure it looks beautiful but what about the risk of mices if you put food on the floor.
Hi Montse ,Well it's real easy...From day one from adding your birds to a new aviary, you just go about your daily routine cleaning and checking the wire. The birds after a week or so will just get use to you moving around the flights.. I also have a plastic patio chair that I sit in the flight for hours on the weekend. The floor of the aviary has over 18 inches deep of gravel with wire mesh about 6 inches down to stop my feet from sinking into the gravel. The flight and shrubs are washed down daily with a garden hose ,so the bird phoo actually feeds the plants and the rest just soaks away . It takes 20 mins daily to clean but I do a better clean on the weekends.
@@montsexena6488 Also I only put food outside for the video. I always feed my birds inside in the birdroom. I might put a bit of vegetables or fruit outside ,but I will remove it after a couple of hours. I'm also proactive with setting mouse traps inside the birdroom and checking the nestboxes everyday.
Se cve chilero pero es mejor verlos en libertad, siembra un arbol, has comederos, deposita alimento para aves, ya veras que tu patio se llena de esas hermosas criaturas...
hello mark I was wondering if you can name the plants in you're aviary. I'm looking to put plants in mine but most of the plants are toxic. thanks for the help
I have so many questions! I have 2 goldfinches and 3 canaries and would love to build them an aviary outside. I live in a very windy area though. How do you keep the floor clean as it looks like you have a natural floor? Is it rat proof? In the winter you said you have a bird room, I don't know what that is and wasn't planning on having one but they need to be warm in the winter. If you have the plastic corrugated roof, doesn't that heat them too much in the summer or lose too much heat in the winter? As it is corrugated, how did you fill the gaps at the top? Do they need a night box? Mine have been inside all their lives so I don't think they would know to use a night box, would I have to shut a door on it every day and open it every morning? I liked the idea of having a very small portion of the roof as wire so that a little rain can drop in for them.
Yes they stay outside all winter. The flight has protective plastic sheets attached to the roof and sides where the high winds/ rains hit. They have access to a heated inside room which is kept at 22 degrees Celsius controlled by a thermostat. The inside is also lit 18 hours a day so the birds can eat late into the evening and before sunrise. so the nights are alot shorter for them thus they can keep their energy levels up to cope with the cold weather.
Also food is very important during winter. I keep the seed boxes filled all day so it never runs out, also I stop feeding green vegetables ie lettuce and spinach too many times a week. But I feed extra fruit and live insects daily. I also add a multivitamin ,B12 and liquid calcium to their drinking water daily. Check out a company called Aviform for water soluble vitamins for birds, they use a 100% natural product with no chemicals or medicines in their supplements.
Wow! This is by far the most natural bird aviary I have seen! I love how the plants and the birds get together. Thank you for the inspiration. I'll soon be doing this on our front yard. Do parakeet and finches go along well? Thank you very much and more power to your channel.
@@MARKSFINCHES Noted on this. I really appreciate your reply. 😊 How about African lovebirds? Actually I already bought a pair a while ago. 😅 But I will be buying finches as well. 😊
Does it get very cold in Devon in the winter? I always wanted an aviary, but I don't want to live in any place hot like Arizona or Florida. I always thought it'd be cool if I could have an indoor/outdoor aviary even if I did live up north. And it does get cold in the winter. How do you combat that for your tropical birds?
No pond, just a garden resin waterfall water feature under the shed window on the flight floor. It gently flows into a couple shallow pools for the birds to bathe in. I have the water running through a UV light that kills any bugs and bacteria in the water. But I do change the water daily with the hosepipe.
Hi Asad My sheds aka bird rooms are heated all year round to 20c ,Most of my birds are housed in my heated breeding room for the winter ,Che k out my other videos. cheers Mark
No not without an heated bird room they can roost in at night, I'm bird rooms are heated to 20°c. Some finches like Star and java sparrows dont roost in a nest box.
