    My favorite Larry Bird trash talk story involves Dale Ellis. Larry Bird couldn't compete in the 3-point shootout in 1989 because of his double Achilles surgery. A reporter asked Ellis if his win was because of Bird's injury and non-participation. Ellis said "Bird knows where he can find me." Bird heard about it and replied "I know where I can find him. At the end of the Bull's bench." Savage.

    Larry’s college stats : look back at the footage of the court - there were NO THREE POINT LINES on the court… because three-pointers didn’t exist in NCAA or NBA !
    That’s right… Larry got that 30 ppg stat without 3s !
    The old ABL and ABA had the 3 pt line in the 60s , but not the NBA.
    -The NBA adopted the 3 pt line in *1979* - Larry’s and Magic’s rookie year !
    -The NCAA adopted it fully in 1986 (which means MJ’s college career was also without the 3 pt line!)
    - High schools adopted it in 1987.
    So again, remember when looking at old-school basketball (pre-1987) , the vast majority of players were raised and trained in a sport that didn’t have “extra credit” for long-range shots… it makes a big difference in the style of play.

    Larry didn't hurt his back in 87 or chopping wood. He hurt it in 85. Paving a driveway for his mom. His broken back would lose its structural stability. It would lock up in abnormal positions. He would have to get adjustments just to be able to play. Sometimes going straight to the hospital after a game. To spend the night in traction. He even played in one of those back/body brace.
    Yes he was the 3rd player to have 3 consecutive MVP's. Founder of the 50/40/90 club.

And wilt was prolific but he wasn’t anywhere near as effective a scorer as Kareem or shaq. Thus the reason his game got a whole lot more effective once he STOPPED scoring. If u scoring at your best is a detriment to success, how can u be labeled the best at it? I’d say Jordan and Kareem as the best scorers.

    Dude seriously! I am 55 years old and I watched all of this including pistol Pete. Pistol Pete is who magic Johnson admitted to stealing all of his moves from. And I know for a fact that Larry Bird did the same. All of today's NBA stars and ones of the past stole oll of their great offensive moves from him or stole them from someone who stole them from pistol pete. If you look up the NCAA top scores you'll find pistol Pete at the top to this very day. He was an offensive menace against every other team but his defense was not that great. He did not have to worry about that since he scored 2/3 of all points with every team he played with. Even played with the Boston Celtics and Larry birds freshman year with the Celtics and that was pistol Pete's last year in the league with a banged up knee. Look at what Larry Bird and magic Johnson say about pistol Pete and everyone who ever score the great offensive move stole it from pistol Pete or someone who stole it from pistol pete.

    Pistol Pete average 44 points per game in the NBA before there was a 3-point line. One guy watched all the games and recomputed the points as if there was a three-point line and it turns out that pistol Pete averaged 57 points per game if there was a three-point line. The three-point line did not exist until the '79.80 NBA season when magic Johnson and Larry Bird started and that was pistol Pete's last year and he was playing for the Celtics with Larry Bird at that time.

    The more I watch this video the more I have to add a comment. That 1979 college game between Michigan State and Indiana State was the most watched basketball game in basketball history including the NBA. And Larry Bird and magic Johnson received the lifetime achievement award, they received it together on the same night on the same television broadcast. That is because those two together saved NBA basketball from certain bankruptcy and made it possible for players to make the big money they make today. Pistol Pete in 1970 or 71 was offered 1 million dollars to play with the Harlem Globetrotters because of his ball handling skills and his craziness with the passing. He chose to go with an NBA team. Bad luck followed him but people came to his games because they wanted to watch him and not the team. That is who today's players have all their great plays from. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird topping pistol Pete and everybody else copied magic Johnson and Larry bird. Look up the NCAA stats for yourself if you don't believe me. And remember it was a two-point game back then and there was no three-point line.

  • @Jim-fy3hs
    @Jim-fy3hs Před rokem +1

    I have to correct this point too on your video. He did not sustain this back injury from chopping wood. He's sustained his back injury from putting in a new concrete driveway for his mother's house. They came from shoveling gravel and pouring concrete. Do not digging into the history and you'll see that's true. I don't know who this guy is that made the video but all of it is true except for that one point. Larry Bird did chop wood and he did do concrete and he painted benches all around his hometown but the injury came from putting in a concrete driveway for his mother.

    24-10-6--and you said "pretty good"?. He averaged that for a career and no one else in the history of the game can say that. The FIRST 50-40-90 guy (and he did it back-to-back), 2nd All-time winning pct. for a career (2nd to Magic), 6-0 v. Jordan in playoffs, ROY, 3 straight 2nd place MVP finishes, 3 straight MVPs after, multiple 2nd team ALL-NBA Defensive Team, LEAGUE LEADER in '85 Defensive Win-Shares, 3 straight 3-pt Shootout winner--I ask the reader-- HOW MANY GUYS can you argue as the best shooter all-time, AND also the best passer/court vision (he made passes that no one else saw, made full-court pin-point routinely, rarely turned it over), AND best rebounder at position (SF 10/game career), AND best FT shooter (made over 60 consecutive during in-play throughout a season/career 89%), AND best clutch player, AND toughest --he played with broken vertebrae, herniated disks, broken orbital eye bone (finished game, missed no time, never wore mask), played with bone spurs in both feet (surgery), played through double achilles tendonitis (surgery), AND biggest impact player (+32 wins rookie year--all-time record, title in year 2), AND All-Time undisputed BEST trash-talker? Just one. The guy who went 30-12-10-9-2 blocks in 31 minutes against UTAH in '85 (near quad-double). The man who went 49-15-12-4 blocks with the broken back vertebrae and ankle problems at 35 just to help ensure Boston would make the playoffs in a big regular season game against the loaded, prime Trailblazers. The man who, up by 12 with 3 minutes to go in the fourth, would dive into the 3rd row for a loose ball with a bad back, routinely. When you watch Larry Bird, you are watching the greatest ever to play the game, and no one worked harder or played through that kind of pain for that length of time, or made those around him better than he did. PERIOD. Luka puts up similar stats, but he will never be All-Defensive 2nd team or lead league in Defensive win-shares, and he will not end up with multiple titles against a decade stacked with All-Time talent and teams, he will never be at top in all-time winning pct., he will never have the court-vision, or back-to-back-to-back MVPs, he will never shoot any and all shots with his off-hand, he will never be able to talk trash and back it up the way Bird did, he will never have the legends tell trash-talking stories about him. BIRD is ALL-TIME LEGENDARY. I am sorry so many great fans of the game today missed him-keep watchin' him on CZcams. The funny thing is, when he came in the league--no one had ever seen a guy play that complete of a game before (black or white), let alone at 6'10'', and on top of that, the fact he was white made it even harder to comprehend. White people, at the time (1979), were not even considered really capable of being a GREAT basketball player. Barry, Walton, and Maravich were considered almost anomalous. If you were white and known as a solid defender who was durable, willing to go after loose balls and get the ball to the open scorers, you were doing good and considered a solid player--that was sort of a ceiling for white guys at the time. Larry Bird turned all that on its head immediately. And strange enough, some black players seemed almost offended by this. Bird would break the ice with brazen trash-talk and that made it all even more bizarre. What an era, what a team, what a player. Peace.

You don't know, because you don't know the history of the game. Rule changes are the reason for all the inflated stats that are happening now. I would love to see Lebron try to score in the paint, in 1986. They would fowl him hard, over and over. He would still be great, but he would be fowled hard every game. Still, thanks for the vid, good job.

    This narrator doesn't have many of his facts straight when it comes to Bird. First of all, Larry didn't injure his back by chopping any wood. He hurt it by shoveling gravel while building a driveway at his mom's house. Also, he messed up by saying that Bird hardly dunked the ball. He slammed it through the hole many times. But the biggest mistake he made was saying that Bird was awkward and unathletic. Bird was very athletic. Being slow and not being able to leap very high does not make you "un-athletic!" He never could have played the way he did if he was awkward & un-athletic. Period. I'm just mentioning these things because if you're going to go on youtube and talk about anyone's career, you damn well get it right! Because people will start to believe it's all true! Not fair for Bird..
