mixmaster mike and/or c2c
Where's the Tipper breakdown?! We've been waiting ::)
Also, dj jazzy Jeff invented the most ubiquitous hip hop scratch of all time, the chirp scratch
He popularised it but didn't invent it
Just learning how to DJ while in Antarctica. Your videos have provided so many tips and tricks, it has made me a favorite here. I love the long echo effect want to try it out at the next dance party.
Seriously tho? Well, good luck! Hope you'll mix on fire! On ice!
Keep it up bro. âșïž What equipment do you have?
@@DJLyncho currently using Virtual DJ and a Hercules Inpulse 300. Plan on going with the Inpulse 500 when I get back to the states.
@@sparkyonice1219 nice! I'll be clicking on your name in time to come to see if you uploaded anything đ.
@@djcarlo thankyou bro
i learn a lot from you đ
This is a dope breakdown on some of the techniques utilized by the Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff. He has been an inspiration since '86. Salute. đ·
Thanks bud! Glad you liked the breakdown on Jazzy Jeff, and thanks for sticking around till the end!
Awesome video applying techniques from one of the most prolific DJs to modern gear & tracks. You are The Man DJ Carlo!
I appreciate that! Glad you both enjoy our works! Thanks!
his transformer is untouchable. ive been a student of his style since the 80s
Indeed! You can't go wrong with the man who essentially pioneered that technique!
These are well-edited mixes that cater to beginner, intermediate, and advanced DJs. Thanks! If you can do another video on another top DJ's mixing techniques, that would be great.
Yes more of these types of videos coming soon!
His transformer scratch has always been my favorite đ·. This as with all of your videos was fantasticđđŸđ„đ„đ„!
Thanks bud! Really appreciate that. And yeah man, the transformer scratch is, and will always be, one of his signatures!
Really like this vid!! đ·đ·
My favorite things from Jazzy Jeff have been his "Peter Piper" routine, and the scratches that he did at the end of "From Da South" with The Fresh Prince. He's got an awesome touch!!
Glad you really liked this vid bud! And yeah, From Da South was amazing!
Man Jazzy Jeff came down to New Orleans with Dj AM and I tell ya Jazzy threw that on and extended that routine it made everyone and AM throw that hands up!! It on youtube .Just search for DJ JAzzy Jeff and DJ am House of blues New Orleans.
Saw him at The Do Over in LA and he was insane! Him and djAM are hands down my two favorite deejays of all time. Great vid!
Watching Jazzy Jeff perform is always a treat!
Awesome video as always - both the loop blending transition and the off beat phase trick accent effect look like fun and exciting skills that I will start practicing.
Thank you for all that you do in setting up future generations of DJ for success. đ·đâš
Thanks for the appreciation bud! Hope you enjoy playing around with the loop blending and off beat phase trick accent effects! I'm sure you'll make great mixes with them.
Blending is transitioning
The phase half note trick is called âchoppingâ and was invented by dj screw. Hence âscrewed and choppedâ - swishahouse and such. Itâs setting an identical track one quarter note ahead of the main track. Then using the crossfader to chop back and forth. For that extra Texas sauce, add flanger fx too. Love your videos Carlo, just wanted to add that little tidbit
Thanks for adding that tidbit of info bud! Really appreciate that!
Nah man, thatâs DEFINITELY NOT a technique invented by DJ Screw. Thatâs an OLD technique actually called âflashingâ or âchasingâ by some DJs. That style has been done since Grandmaster Flash made it popular in the late 70s.
@@rbiznezz2 oh gotcha ok. Good to know. It was popularized by dj screw though, hence the term âscrewed and chopped,â which is what we call it nowadays. Always points back to The Godfatherâs of scratching though, I hear that.
@@greensleeves32 no doubt!! We all continue to learn everyday⊠salute fam!!
@@rbiznezz2 hell yea!
Great video. Iâm trying to get into djing. Been watching all of your videos !!
Thanks Angelica! I really hope as well that you get to learn from the videos as well!
My Man!!! Youâre on it. You and Jazzy Jeff are my favs. đđŸ
My dude! Thank you so much! And I'm glad you enjoyed the breakdown!
Great vid brotherman. You and Trazye are my fav Threestyle winners, and you both make it look easy. Cheers buddy!
Thanks man! Really appreciate that! It's all honestly in the practice
Awesome breakdown, I liked creating a loop on the breakdown and echoing out.... Gonna work on that today :D đ·
That's great Credry! Let me know how much progress you make!
Bro, Iâm watching almost all of your video . I like the way you present. BTW I bought DDJ 400 just because of youđ I never use MIDI before but sometimes itâs kind of cool toođkeep it up And I am big fan of J. Jeff
Thanks Niro! And I hope you're enjoying the 400 as much as I am!
Very well done! I've been listening to Jeff mix since 1984 on the many mix tapes he had out in Philly. I've always believed he is ambidextrous because his cuts and scratches have always been so precise on either turntable. After Lighting Rich introduced the Transformer Scratch and Cash Money perfected it, there was a rumor in West Philly that Jeff couldnât Transform. By this time, Jeff was with Will Smith and I got ahold of a mix tape where Jeff did the Rock The Bells routine. He killed it! Now, I'm going to say this, and it's just my opinion. Jeff did his Rock The Bells routine BEFORE DJ Bobcat did "Go Cut Creator Go." (1987) If you've every heard the end of "Go Cut Creator Go," you'll know what I'm talking about, but I'm just saying...
Now this is some awesome history right here! Thanks for sharing that Rodney!
Thank you Rodney for setting the record straight about the history behind the transformer scratch. I donât believe many DJâs even know who Lightning Rich is as far as the community is concerned. I give you huge props to Cash Money. Heâs definitely is one of my all time favorite DJâs.
đ·I like the techniques of his persona, he seems like a great person to work with and treating people nicely goes very far
Indeed! You don't stay on top in an industry for this long by being a nasty person.
You're the man Carlo. Thank you, great insight.
Thanks Soo Jin! Glad you learned something new from the video!
@@djcarlo love your channel. thank you!
đ· TRANSFORM SCRATCH ,has always been my favorite and probably the HARDEST to master.. remember LL's go cut creator go..the scratching on there was priceless đ
The transform scratch is so good!
âGo Cut Creator Goâ was crazy. DJ Bobcat was actually the one scratching on that song. Most of the cuts were stabs though, not as much transforming (it was great when he did transform though!)
DUDE!!!! You are da man. Thanks so so much for this tutorial.
Glad it helped you! Thanks man! More videos to come!
Super awesome breakdown đ„đđ·
More where that cane from!
no way in hell you could ever scratch like Jeff on now=e of those controllers !!!!!! That's what makes the man amazing being able to use one turntable to crush. Never seen anyone as good as him. He is the one DJ the has been in the game for years took all his skill was able to evolve with the NEW TECH!!!!!!! we should bow to him
Well, actually, that's the thing! He evolved with the new tech, which does include some of these controllers. It's totally possible Jeremy, though larger plates would be preferable.
Super helpful stuff! đ·
I always try to keep it helpful and entertaining Daniel! You know that hahaha
hey bro, thankyou for teaching us

Thanks Sike! Glad you enjoyed the breakdown video!
Whatsup Carlo, another great vid... coming in from Vegas!!
9f course being ol school dj the best Jazzy Jeff is PETER PIPER routine !đ
Thanks Repeat! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I personally use echo, reverb, and high pass for the echo fade out on my Numark Party Mix and it works great if you understand programing midi!

great tutorial vid!! Wouldn't mind seeing you do these videos using Virtual DJ also, thanks.
Maybe one of these days! But the tricks and techniques also apply when used in VDJ, so try giving it a shot there.
Dope video!!!!
Thanks bud! Hope you enjoyed the breakdown of Jazzy Jeff!
Yo DJ Carlo, Break - It - Down, Break - It - Down!!! đ„đ
Favorite đ·Jeff technique is the long echo and settings.
Favorite đ· Jeff routine thatâs not Peter Piper or Rock the Bells is his J Dilla/Bobby Caldwell âThe Light/Open Your Eyesâ tribute on the 2015 Red Bull Thre3style World Finals session with SkratchBastid
đ„đ„
You know your Jazzy Jeff man! Haha, thanks for watching till the end too!
@@djcarlo, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince first broke when I was a teenager. đ€«đđ
I know what I like and do the old school thing of watching videos to learn and pick up techniques, music, etc.
Your videos are perfect for those who want to see how things are broken down. I appreciate what you do to improve the DJ community. Mad props to you. đ€đŒ
Hey kids Johnbronski here from the Masterplan Hip Hop Radio Show 1989 to 96. Just a little trick learn to mix by bar not beat. 4 / 4 time is the beat so drop your mix or release your scratch on the 1 (one) . Never on the 2, 3, or 4. Always on the ONE.... If you notice Jazzy Jeff does all the time which keeps the mix on time. Enjoy
This rule is pretty much absolute unless you're working with radio edits! But with proper mixes, absolute! Thanks for that Johnbronski!
Omg this edm overload is too much. More hip hip mixes please
Alrightie! I'll take note of your suggestion! Thanks for the idea!
I think its because he uses them bcos they are not copyrighted and they are easier to quickly mix
I love the transform scratch that I need to work on.
No time like the present to start practicing!
Good work đđđ
Thanks Twinstar! Glad you enjoyed the video!
salute I am from Philly I got to see Jazzy Jeff play in the late 80s
That must've been amazing to see!
You aren't exactly a normal dj, your skills are sickđ„
Thanks bud! I'm glad you think so! All in the years of practice I guess haha
Love the lot
Awesome Alan! Glad you loved the breakdown!
And Jeff did all this before computers. All us old schoolers did
Yup yup! True skills there, and he's even upped the ante even more in the digital age!
I actually use that loop technique all the time! It just made sense- never knew it was a real thing!
It really is! And a very useful technique at that!
Nice Vid!
Yay! Thank you! Which among the DJ tricks do you think is the most difficult to do?
Now itâs hard to pick and choose which one is my favorite, but I do like the chirp scratch, I used to do so much back in the day and now I have two left arms đ but Iâm going to start working hard on it.
It should be like riding a bike Benny! It'll come back!
đ·i dnt know how to scratch, but the echoing effect seems cool ,i need to try and put on my list hahaha .
As always ,thanks mate, keep it upđ„đ„đ„
The echo effects are insanely useful! Give them a shot, and believe me you'll enjoy yourself!
He invented transformer scratch.. well, him and cash money đ
Two absolute legends right there!
@@djcarlo yessss đ
Hi man i recently discovered your channel and its amazing great stuff, but i wonder if you could ever make a video about the history of electronic music or dj in general as i think that understanding the history its very important for the new generation in general (maybe you can base on ishkur excelent website) or maybe a method to transition between and old school edm to a new school for instance i recently listen to klf- "the last train to trancedance" and i wonder how such an excelent song can transition to and amir van burren or tiesto song? Anyways keep the good work homie
Welcome to the channel Carlos! Interesting suggestion on the history of electronic music, but that's gonna be a whole series of videos (or a full on documentary) if I do it. I'll see about the old to new transitions though; that's something that might be doable!
The Goat!
Jeff is the best!
All the Denon Prime standalone gear has a wash out echo effect. It has one knob. And no filter is needed. đ
That's right!
Can't believe you broke down the master thank you man great work.
Had a lot of people asking me to do that, so I wanted to challenge myself, so here we are!
excellent
Thanks Roger! Glad you liked the breakdown on Jazzy Jeff!
đ·amasing content
Thanks Thyang! Appreciate you watching till the end too!
Technology has changed a lot, but I did much of that in my high school and college years as a DJ (78-84). Had echo effects on cart machines and reel to reels back then LOL
I've seen some of those machines! Man, I've always wanted to try them, but most of the ones I encounter here are purely for display.
The manual delay by duping the track was really cool. Gonna try that!! đ·code BOOMER đ€Ł
Go for it Jason! You never know what new heights it could bring your set to!
All of it! đ·
In all fairness, they're all great styles for mixing! Thanks for watching till the end!
DJ Carlo Atendido, you could stay in Philly with1988 DMC Champion DJ Cash Money. In my humble opinion, DJ Jazzy Jeff is an awesome turntablist! But DJ Cash Money is the best, to me. Cash defeated Joe Cooley at the New Music Seminar in 1987. That was a scary close battle! I'm a strictly Cash Money fan whenever he is battling, but Joe Cooley was a beast! And then there's DJ Jazzy Joyce, the first female battle DJ I've ever heard of. Cash beat her too in 1987 to unify the NMS and DMC titles! From 1984-90, nobody could touch DJ Cash Money! And Cash and Jeff performed together as, The Kings of Spin, just as a side note. I had a cassette of them performing together that was out-of-this-world! At that time, Cash was with Cool Breeze Steve (not MC Marvelous). So, I would like to see you break down the DJ Cash Money Showcase Set at the 2013 DMC USA New York Regional. I think it was on May 10, 2013. I am eagerly looking forward to this breakdown!!!
Oh dang! That's gonna be a fun challenge to break down. I'll see if I can get to that one!
I don't remember scratches having names growing up in this era.
I guess people had to name them instead of going by the onomatopoeia, because that could've gotten confusing really fast.
HAHA, you're gonna laugh at this one.
I legit just realized I could activate the echo and not have it engaged by having the knob all the way down first.
I'm still a noob, but man, this made me chuckle lol
Hahaha, you learn as you go along! I too made that mistake once many moons ago
He is and always will be tha magnificent Jazzy Jeff.
And will always be! One of my absolute inspirations!
I'm from Philly and remember when Jeff was Dj ing before Will .and at the time Jeff was reining Supreme. But then Came Dj Cash Money. I see so many DJs doing Jeff's routine. But the reason I don't see to many Djs trying to do a Cash Money routine. View footage of Dj Cash Money and see for yourself who is the most creative of the two Philly Pioneers in turntsblism.
Cash Money is another legend Andre! I don't know why more people don't know of him
@@djcarlo the answer is because of Will Smith. Jeff is known more.Facts
Jazzy Jeff is on a whole different level, The best!
Agreed! It was hard for me to pick WHAT to break down haha
DJ Carlo thank you so much for your videos. I have long loved JazzyJeff and this helped breakdown his incredible moves. One question I have is I recently upgraded to xdjrx3 and am trying to edit the echo settings for the best results of the tutorial. Since Iâm not using a laptop or software âŠI donât know how to change those! Any help is greatly appreciated.
No worries! Just increase the Dry/Wet Knob to the max! and work from there
Tbh I actually admire all scratching DJs who make their own tricks đ·
It's all that hard work paying off!
DJ Carlo, I'm a beginner Thanks a lot have a nice day .
Welcome to the DJ world Tom!
hey carlo very good explanation well today is my birthday
Happy Birthday Tushar!! And thanks man, glad you enjoyed the video!
Cool cool music
Glad you enjoyed the musical selection in this one!

Transformation scratch is the best espesilly when Jeff is on the decks đ·
Oh indeed. It became the one technique that almost always gets associated with him!
Dj Carlo can you do a mixing video with the Rev-1 Pioneer?
Oh cool! I'll take note of your suggestion! Thanks for dropping by!
For me, Jeffs best scratch is the Transformer. The first time I heard it was on "The Magnifent Jazzy Jeff" song with The Fresh Prince(Will Smith) back in the day. I'm 55 so I was there!!LOL đ·
Man, it must've been mind blowing to hear it fresh for the first time!
@@djcarlo It totally was man. It was so different to what all the DJ's and B-Boys had heard before! They'll never be another time like that and I feel blessed to have been there to experience it all. Peace!
Hey carlo could you explain maybe more about how to setup at ur first dj gig and what u need? I have a ddj-800 but do i still need a mixer than?
If you've got a DDJ 800, no need for a mixer! Just make sure the venue has the right cables for your preferred output
Carlo could you do some breakdown videos of Dj's with virtual Dj? Me and my Filipina would love to learn something like this on virtual dj. We have pioneer ddj sx3's for controllers.
I'm still exploring Virtual DJ as I've yet to properly ever use it. Maybe in the future bud!
