  • Honey harvesting | Jenu krushi part 2 | ಜೇನು ಕೃಷಿ | Bee keeping | Harvesting honey | Bhat‘n'Bhat
A video had been already posted regarding "Honey farming part 1" during the end of January. So, viewers were waiting eagerly to watch it's part 2. So, hereby we present the part 2 of honey cultivation video, in which you find the information regarding when to collect honey, how to extract honey, measures and precautions to be taken while collecting honey, tools required, features of honey filled comb, eggs and male bees, queen bee, then again setting the frame by tying the comb to prepare next batch of honey collection of beehive.
The end of February or beginning of March is the perfect time for the first batch of honey collection. Some minimum tools required in honey collection are- a tray, a clean cloth to cover the box, knife and areca palm leaves to place the frames.
Information given regarding the protection of honey forming box. The box is covered to protect it from direct sunlight and rain. At the bottom, water is kept in a bowl to protect the box from insects attack. This water is also beneficial to the beehive if necessary. Before opening the box it is advised to tap it gently. This will lead the bees sitting in the cover to go inside the box. The dark bee shown here is identified as 'male bee'. Such bees do not work and even don't bite. But eat the honey which is formed by female bees. So, gradually female bees start to kill male bees.
Again the cloth is covered the box and insufflation helps to the bees go inside the box. It helps to take out the frames easily.
There are 2 parts in the box at the top and bottom. We take only from the top and leave the honey at the bottom for sake of bees. But purely business minded people collect honey from both the parts.
Here a honey extracting mechine ( manual) is used which has 4 frames capacity. Before extracting honey, there is a process of gently cutting both the surfaces of the honey comb. Bees cover the comb when these completely filled with honey.
Next step is placing the frames inside the machine and rotating it with hands. Honey flows out in the pipe, strained in the cloth and collected in the vessel. If the honey is left / remained, again place inside the machine and rotate. If single frame kept there will be imbalance. So place 4 frames. This machine doesn't damage honey comb.
After collecting honey, bottom part is opened. Hence, everyone of us searched queen bee but we couldn't find it. But an egg of queen found at the edge. It is usually found at the edges. Some people destroy the egg of queen bee, in order to prevent the beehive dividing into two parts, by forming a new queen bee.
Next step is to cut the honey comb into parts and tying to the empty frames. This helps bees to work faster and prepare next batch of honey soon. Difference between honey part and eggs are shown in honey comb. Then the difference between honey comb (new=white and old =black) is also shown. Either the combs on the box can be cut and tied to the empty frames or new (artificial) combs can be purchased from the market and tied to it. Now a days we are not able to get pure honey in the market. Adulterated honey is easily available. i.e, honey mixed with sugar /jaggery syrup. Sometimes honey comb is dipped in these syrups, then tied to the frames, this is also not a pure honey.
The important thing is spray of chemical pesticides and use fertilizers and totally unorganic way of farming. Which results in people consuming chemical through honey. Bees collect honey from such flowers (sprayed with chemicals) to which ultimately harmful to the beehive, people and also to the nature. So hereby we are giving a message that- "please follow the method of organic farming which is best to both nature, beehive and the mankind."

What a great learning - never knew honey extracting is actually non-violent process, unlike what we have been exposed to in western bee keeping methods viz. very violent. I loved the way all of them treat the bees with such gentleness and not harming them in any way. Thank u Sudarshan for a beautiful, loving video.
