My first impressions with the Ricoh GR III & Ricoh GR IIIx are complicated. In this video, I will share five things I love about these cameras, and five things I hate about them. Especially if you're considering one of these cameras as an alternative to the Fujifilm X100V or XE4, you may find my conclusions enlightening.

@@Reggiebphotosecond hand Fuji xf10 has them all. Thanks for the video
Every point and shoot style camera has shot up in price. Got my GR III for around £600 secondhand a few years ago. Trading in my GR II brought the amount I had to pay to about £350. Now the GR II is £600! And the III £900 sometimes. Still not as bad as the 40% markup the X100V has over its RRP of £1350. Seen them go for £1600-1900.
@@j_quadssize?
@@ewanmcqueen9715 yes , Fuji xf10 size is almost equal to Ricoh GR iii. Note that Fuji xf10 is not the same as Fuji x-t10 which is much larger than xf10
I’m a sony A7R III user but I’ve had my Ricoh GrIIIx over and year and I can say I love it. I take it everywhere I go it’s amazing in low light and just so convenient I’ve read the dust issue comments but I’ve ignored them haven’t had a problem with that at all
I had a GRII. 3 things made me sell it:
- the 28mm equivalent field of view, I felt that my iPhone could take the same picture most times, with an easier workflow
- the lack of EVF
- the lack of blur for portraits (f2.8 and 28mm eq.)
Went for a Fuji X100F and overall it’s a better choice for me. I do miss the pocketability and general UX of the GR.
I ended up buying both a GRIII and a GRIIIx, and they've become my only cameras (from multiple Fuji cameras). With a toddler, I was finding it a little difficult to carry around my X-T3, and these just fit my needs and use cases a little better. Sometimes I will carry both in a sling, but often depending on where we are going, I will just choose one of them and chuck it in my pocket. To your point about the dials, I have found them a little more useful for myself, and I actually shoot manual more often with these cameras. You're right on the ISO, but I often just treat that like a set setting, as with back in the film days. Honestly, these cameras have been a revelation for me, and I can't believe how good the lenses and sensors are on them. I feel like I get better results, or more desirable results (for me), out of these over my Fujis, and I just prefer the way they render (again, personal preference).
This is a good approach on setting it like a film! I like your style.
Ditto re GRs being my only camera/s now.
what do you think about the "differences" in the models?..not much different overall?..thanks
I don't love the shooting experience of my ricoh GR III as much as my fujifilms, but as you said, its the only dedicated camera you can truly bring everywhere and that doesnt bother other people when you take it out in a public place. My one major complaint about it is the lack of weather sealing which, where I live, often negates its main advantage
Fair point.
Fujifilm xf10...
As long as you enjoy it, keep sharing it! Your photographs are great.
Considering there’s no viewfinder, nice frames dude ❤. Absolute clinic
Not my preferred workflow but thanks my friend
Jeez man, your photos are stellar. Congratulations!
What’s funny is I just got my GRiii in the mail right when this video was released 😂 Looking forward to trying it out and seeing if it’s right for me. I recently sold my X100V since it wasn’t actually pocketable and also made a profit on it (still in disbelief but man they are expensive now). Just needed a good small everyday camera instead of my large Sony or Fuji kit. It definitely feels cheaper in the hand than other cameras, but honestly it’s SO small and lightweight which makes it worth the trade off.
yup, they both have their pros and cons. i don't really think people should compare them.
I think you will love it. I only shot fuji and i was very comfortable with the ricoh right away. Its super sharp. Sharper than my fuji lenses. I know some of it is processing. Also being that my x-e1 and x100 og are my favorite fuji's . I guess the razor ricoh makes it unique.
I love my GR III as I loved my GR II before it. And I endlessly look at reviews for things before buying them. I had somehow got it in my head that they had made the GR III somewhat weather resistant and I shot it like that for a few months. Really enjoying it as a go anywhere camera. Still only getting it out in a light shower nothing too bad. Of course dust did get on the sensor. So to me it's more that I am now a little wary of keeping it in just a regular pocket and cleaning out my camera bags more often. Ultimately Ricoh need to address this fully so the rep improves. Also my IBIS sometimes goes into oberdrive and shakes non stop for as long as you have the camera on.
Thanks for sharing! What do you do to
Mitigate dust?
@@Reggiebphoto I mostly just avoid keeping it in trouser/short pockets. I have bought the filter adapter to put mist filters on but I assume they also help. I think people keep going on about the dust thing because it disrupts how they intended to use the camera. I wanted a pocket camera but it can't be relied upon to be dust free if you do that.
Had my GR3 for a couple of years … never had a dust problem, takes incredible photos … get what you mean about the three buttons, but you soon get use to that … my pet peeves are battery life (solved by purchasing a couple of spares) and no view finder … can be a ball ache on a bright day and holding it out in front of me, kinda kills the ‘covert’ advantage of I’m just a ‘point and shoot tourist’ 😊
really refreshing take - not just the same thing everyone else is saying. i also learned a few things i didn’t know you could do!
i always love seeing how others’ film simulation recipes compare to mine. if you feel like sharing, i’d love to see yours!
thanks so much 🙏🏻
appreciate you noticing. i did some research on other people's thoughts and made sure to touch on things that I've observed that they failed to mention.
what are some things you didnt' know you could do?
i didn’t realize you could change the film simulation on a photo after the fact!
i shot a jazz show a few weeks ago and realized partway through that the images would look better in black and white. i’ll have to go back and change the recipe.
also different techniques about handling white balance changes - i’ll have to try using auto and multi point wb settings for indoor/outdoor.
thanks again for the tips!
I learned the WB thing from another CZcamsr. And yes. Being able to change to your other saved film sim recipe is clutch
But Reggie - the dust! 😂 I’ve heard that so many times, and everyone warns about it always say they don’t have that issue. But I don’t even own a GRIII, because I know as soon as I buy it, the GRIV will come out - I’ll grab that one! 😅
The mentality of waiting for a new model is always weird to me lol.
@@Reggiebphoto The GRIII released what- over 4 years ago? We’re due for an upgrade. I say go for it if you have money to burn! But I’ll wait and see a bit longer and shoot my Fujis
@@Reggiebphoto I am waiting for a Fuji X100VI. I refuse to pay 50% premium on a used camera. I can imagine IBIS and a better sensor. Hoping for the $1399 price.
Bought a GRiiiX at a good price to see what the buzz is about. I couldn’t buy a GRiii as I don’t like the 28mm FOV unless in a parade or demonstration. Too wide for my taste. The biggest hurdle, for me, is the lack of EVF. I like to frame my images using an EVF. I’m also not too keen that this body lacks a tilty screen.
I know all these shortcomings prior to buying the GRiiiX. The good news is if i can’t get my head around this camera I can craigslist it and not loose too much money. At least I can set the touchscreen to touch to focus and then fire the shutter.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I am Fuji User since 2001. Actually I use a Xpro3 with 3 lenses. But I also had an GR3 and now an GR3x. And both have their strengths and weaknesses. On a roundtrip I usually use my Xpro3 during the day and for Dinner an night street shots I use my Ricoh. And Reggie you forgot to mention the excellent sharp lens fro the Ricoh. And I would like to Know your Portra Recipe for the Ricoh 😊. Best Regards from Austria, Oliver
What Fuji's did you use before XF?
5:38 YES!! I do not understand why everyone recommends a lens cap for the GR IIIx. I can't tell you how many times I've dropped the cap on the ground forgetting to take it off. Even worse, sometimes it stays on and the camera gives an error saying the lens failed to extend. It's simply way too easy to forget to take the cap off, and I worry that it will eventually damage the lens mechanism.
💯
Agreed with the metal lens cap issue so I went with JJC ALC-GR. Slight bulk but not too bad. Seems to limit the dust issue to the lens barrel so far.
Right now I put a nisi adapter with a CineBloom
I've had my Ricoh GR IIIX for over a year now. I take with me everywhere. I love this camera.
Would love to see the film sims! Thanks for sharing
Coming soon!
I find that the hate for Ricoh cameras is usually from people who have never used it, used it for a week on release for a review, or saw an opinion of one of these and accepted it at face value. Usually when I push for detail/experience or respond to outdated info they run away. 🙄
I am surprised to see another Fujifilm user praise this camera in general though. I love it. I upgraded from the X70 and wow does this camera have better UX considerations. All the well-thought-out modes and shooting styles you can do with this little thing is incredible. It's a real testament to having passion for product design. I almost feel like the people who worked on it should be designing something more important than fine art point and shoots. 😂
My only negative for this camera is no flip up selfie screen. It's the only thing that makes me feel like I can't have full confidence bringing it as my sole camera no a trip or something. I need something I can use as low or awkward angles and selfies with the family.
Bear in mind that I have a front filter so I have no dust issues, and no scratches. I also have a little grip for comfort and to protect the bottom of the chassis and battery door from impact. Plus, I bought one of the post GR IIIX models of the GR III so it has the more durable back dial. Finally, I have a couple extra batteries in my wallet, so I can reload if I need to in the day. These are probably pretty important workarounds, so I thought it was worth mentioning. It's still very pocketable. I actually use a small 1L waist pack where both the GR III and G7XII fit in together. So I've got great photo and video for less bulk than my X-T2.
Also, nobody ever mentions this, but the AF is actually pretty good. I'd say it was more reliable than my Fujifilm cameras. At least up until X-Trans IV.
It's maybe my second favourite camera ever, right after my old retired X70.
I still use this in tandem with my x70. I find they both have their uses. And I will say the negativity I’ve gotten is mainly from those who owned one and had a dust failure. Those are the people who make a point to warn me as if somehow their warning can do something
@@Reggiebphoto That makes sense. I actually got dust in my X70, it was literally from a couple days in my gross pockets with no cap. Probably won't happen to everyone though, and so long as I was below f8 you don't see it. ✌
Thanks for another video - would like to hear more about your film sims on the GR platform.
What questions do you have?
@@Reggiebphoto … I had a x100v and have been thinking about getting a GR. Is Reggie’s Portra, or other sims, able to easily be created and saved to the camera? Does the GR have a ‘Q’ button to easily access different sims? Also, and you may have answered this, How is the quality of the GR’s jpeg, compared to the Fuji? Thanks so much!
Can you do a video where you are more specific about your camera settings. You’ve got some really good sharp photos
What do you mean? Like exposure settings or how I’ve set up the camera.
The highlight metering is totally baller. Nikon also has it. Fujifilm really needs to add it. It’s an amazing little camera.
Every camera has this it would just be considered spot metering
Spot metering is different. As you can put the spot on the darkest part of the frame and it wouldn’t be highlight weighted at that point
Yep it's true. I have my Z6II set so when I press the focus selection button, it will temporarily go into Highlight Metering and then when I depress, it goes back into my previous metering mode. I love that!!
@nerwin Nikon was one of the first to implement this even back in the d850.
Love it! Would love to see your tweaked recipe for negative film!
I'm on it.
did this come out?@@Reggiebphoto
Looking forward to details on setting up instant AE in M mode. New to GR world and am impressed / bewildered by all the customization options
What questions do you have?
How do you turn this on? Is it a button you press whilst in M mode
Would definitely love to see some of your recipes for the Ricoh gr cameras. 👍👍👍
which one? black and white? Or color?
Colour!
@@Reggiebphoto I would love to see both, but if I have to choose, it’s color.
@@Mathew-vlogs both will happen, but gotta prioritize it on my content calendar. thanks!
Excelelnt video! I am currently waiting for the IIIX HDF! I can't wait for your opinion on this.
See idk if I agree that people are less standoffish with compact camera vs dslrs.. when people see a big camera at an event or even in public they are expecting you to be a photographer and know your gonna get a good picture.. when I use my sony zv1 I look like I'm an amateur photographer taking pictures of them or random buildings for who knows what purpose
Lmao that's a good point. Small cameras are good if you go unnoticed, else creep vibes.
Yeah I don’t take photos of people I don’t know. Or who don’t know I’m there. So my thoughts weren’t addressing your context
@Reggiebphoto fair enough! And thanks for your response. Just notice people make this point a lot when talking about street photography
So which Fujifilm camera was this being compared too for street photography? Even after 5 years, the Ricoh still sounds like a great point-n-shoot for the street.
This was a nice review. I like the pros & cons you outlined. Cheers.
I rented the x version for a week. Loved that it has IBIS and the photo image output. Hated the tiny buttons, user interface, and how much glare there was on the LCD. So i gave up considering it as a possible new EDC option, and i continue using my Nikon Z50 with 16-50 pancake zoom (and am considering their new 24mm f1.7).
nice
Great content, as usual. Stunning pics. I want that camera!
Thanks Robert!
This camera has made me change how i shoot. I have the x and in tight spaces, i shoot vertical. Where i normally might not with my x100. I also changed how i light the shot. I've been using a light panel, and now a light panel mini.(iwas using pentax one and the q20 firstbut stopped)I Evenuse the light panel on my flash cameras. I find it gives better color and less harsh shadows. For the size of this camera. It can't be beat. I baby mine because i have heard how bad its built. I think its fine. It's not a tank like fuji but i think it will last. I agree with what you said about people saying you should be afraid of using it.
Thanks for the comment
IM amazed at the quality of those photos! They look so good! also seeing all the photos you took makes me realize how much I DONT actually take photos on my day to day, i need to fix that hahha
100%!
Dust is a problem. I have few digicams that has this problem but the thing is I can clean all dusts with a vacuum cleaner :D
What I notice about people complaining on the dust issue mostly people who pixel peep and are mostly concern about specs than experience. Even with the dust on the image, you can still fix it at post. Most of the time you will see it on f16 anyway.
100%
Thanks for the review! Also: I LOVE your photography!! 😍
thanks! which was your favorite photo?
I like the one in the beginnig with the two boys and your pictures of lights at night and the one with the blue car with the orange poles in front. Also I really like how you work with the light. :)
@lenalenalena thanks!
Had to sell my Gr2 because the dust in the sensor. But, was an incredible camera. I did switch to Fuji Xf10, basically the same camera for half the price. But, have to say that Ricoh's colours were much better.
so when you sell a camera with dust in the sensor, do you tell the person you sold it to?
@@Reggiebphoto yes, as it was a shop
Fuji could have been a leader in this field with the XF10. I had one for a couple years. Takes great pictures but the ibis in the Ricoh is a huge benefit. I take shots indoors @1/40th i would not be able to get with the XF10 or my x100 or x-e1. If i go under 1/125th with them. It's hit or miss ... usually miss
@frankartale1026 you are absolutely right. Fuji could lead this segment, but they preferred to go for much more expensive solutions instead of keep the price well under 700€..Nowadays, Ricoh is the only one in the market that sells a pocket camera that delivers like a high end camera. Yet the price of Ricoh went up more than 30% in a year!!! So, despite the small imperfections of Fuji Xf10, I'll keep this camera, at will.
I do see a lot negative thoughts on the GR cameras as well which has kinda discouraged me from buying one but I still really want to experience one of these little guys. I know plenty of people who have them and a lot of have had them for years with no dust issues and then someone will have dust issues a week after buying a new one. What the heck are people doing with them is what I wanna know? They just chucking them in the sand? They live in the desert? They only use them in an extremely dusty environment? Haha....I mean I swear varies by locations and how people treat it. If you take care of your gear the chances are..dust in the GR cameras won't be a huge issue.
you might be able to find a camera store that lets you rent the ricoh camera, it’s what I’ve done to find out whether it works for me
Just get yourself the "Street Edition" and always put it in the small leather case which comes with it. Bought mine over a year ago and never hat any issues.
Great review!!! I just got this little gem and still learning but, I agree…everyone has an opinion about the GR!
Hard to beat the size for any price. Lens is so good.
Great video! I totally agree with you on the flash preview. I can’t believe there is t a setting! Also, would love to see your Reggie’s Portra recipe settings
Coming soon!
Good vid. A few things;
1) Yeh it is annoying that there seems to be no way to turn off Live Preview for purposes of flash. What I have noticed is that when killing ambient light and then half pressing the shutter, it will boost exposure briefly to acquire AF, somewhat of a brief help but yeh not ideal.
2) There is a way to automatically have that flat dial on the back change ISO without needing to press ISO first. I have my GRIIIx set up this way so that the two small 'command dials' control shutter and aperture and the large flat rear one ISO, and from the moment I turn the camera on, spinning the large flat circular wheel changes ISO for me without needing to push the ISO button. Keep playing with it, you'll figure it out (I can't recall what I did to solve this).
3) I'm surprised you didn't list AF as a neg, typically that is where the majority of complaints stem from this camera. Especially street or something with the GRIIIx where we want to take advantage of f2.8 and 40mm and pop that subject out of the frame a little. I keep wishing it had the AF of my XS20 or XH2S where if it doesn't find a face it at least recognises the person, that in many instances would be enough. Body detection rather than Face is really needed!
for number 2, please figure out what you did and comment back. I've tried playing with it and reading the manual thoroughly. can't find the setting. it's likely you set it to auto-iso and are adjusting the exposure comp. which isn't the same.
This camera hates flashes. I used the pentax af201g ttl and the q20 non ttl. The lumecube light panel just works better. The camera already knows how to expose the shot because the light is already on . The mini light panel is perfect in size, but the its a little under powered.. I actually use the hot shoe and mount it vertical.
A lume cube is definitely not comparable to flash in power or light quality tho
Yes probably that is it, but seeing as how Ricoh (and Pentax) cameras actually show you in real time the Auto ISO value that you will get as you pan the camera around (before/without having to half press the shutter button like we do with Fuji), I think this is a pretty decent compromise. You pan the camera at the scene, see the ISO before the shot and can make either EV bias choice (which lowers or raises ISO as Shutter and Aperture remain fixed) or change shutter or aperture if the ISO is where you want it already (to get the exposure you want). I actually hate that Fuji require a half press of shutter to see what ISO we will be given within our Auto-ISO range before taking the shot :(
PS, I watched Samuel Streetlife's recent video and he quickly explained how he often uses Shutter priority and back screen snap focus to take sneaky stealthy shots. I have a hunch that owning a GR is a bit like dipping your toes into a cult and that secret ways of using the camera are eventually taught and learned that are outside of your regular camera comfort zone. Perhaps it takes time to gather these GR trade secrets! 😁
Nice photos. Appreciate the negatives with the positives on the camera. I think you can spot meter the highlights on a Fuji. Maybe not as conveniently or quick.
Yup, spot metering is always possible. Highlight weighted is a modern convenience. Ultimately I wish the gr was better in full manual
Really great video. Thank you. You've taught me a couple of things
What did you learn?
Setting the camera in manual, but having instant automatic exposure. Didn't see this on other reviews.
I'm contemplating this camera, and I'm enjoying learning about what's possible
Thanks for this video man! The more I use it the more I love it. The less weight I have on my pack especially on long hard travels, I feel great. Big camera+lens hard to get those intimate shots, Ricoh FTW cuz its smaller than our phones! I embrace the dust. Lol
The dust is really whatever. Hate the damn problem seekers
one of the most annoying thing about my Fuji camera is not being able to have highlight weighted metering without changing my focus point to and area of the highlights! Love the camera, miss this option that was in my previous Sony camera same for your point about the in camera adjustment of film sim settings…or even if it was in the Fuji app after transfer to my phone.
agreed
True i would love highlight weighted metering like ricoh does it on fuji,
thx for all the samples, especially the portraits; to compare focal lengths
Your fotos are very beautiiful !! i m a huge fan !! Yes, please make a video on how to put Your recepies in the Ricoh GR III . Best wishes. N.B. / Vienna A.

Man, you are taking really good photos. Camera doesn't matter.
Dust on the sensor is my issue. Great little cameras, but that dust problem is an issue, especially for that price
Yup. Y’all have made me aware of that lol
Do you actually have a camera with the issue, or are you just repeating what others have said?
I personally don’t
@@ReggiebphotoYeah, I'm guessing most people don't have this issue. Even if it happens, dust isn't that hard to fix in lightroom/c1.
Would be great to see article or even yt video about your image settings in this video. Used your “Reggie’s Portra” a lot on my 100v, but now thinking about buying griiix for real pocketable experience.
Sounds good!
Rubber band an electric razor to the bottom of the camera -> turn on the razor for a minute -> dust gone.
Lol
I bought a GRIIIx 18 months ago, but only after a lot of hesitation because of all the comments I read about dust. I eventually went ahead but also bought the (very expensive) Ricoh soft leather case with it, which adds almost nothing to the size while protecting the camera from whatever is in my pockets. The good news is that I haven't had any problems with dust or with the jumping around of settings when using the wheel or with scratches. The bad news is that it causes a delay in getting the camera ready for a shot and one of the best things about this camera is how quickly it is ready (if it's not in the case). So, is the answer to find a case that is a better compromise - one which protects the camera from the crap in your pockets but from which you can very quickly pull it out?
Have you tried the metal lens cap?
That sounds like a good idea! Thanks@@Yoko.Kurama
I'm tempted. I'd love a high quality pocketable compact camera.
I also spotted a video on the Fujifilm XF1 which is 2/3" 12mp sensor and pretty old. I think the video I saw mentioned it being a $100 bargain. It's a nice looking camera. Of course now they seem to be selling for $400. They're apparently also prone to a lens connector failure with the way you pull and twist the lens to turn them on.
Maybe Fuji should release a smaller brother compact x100 without leaf shutter.
What’s wrong with the leaf shutter?
@@Reggiebphoto I should have expended on that :) If it helped them get the size a and price down for a kind of mini-x100, I could live with that. (It's probably not going to help with size though?)
Ah makes sense
Great photos, thanks for the review!
100%
Intelligent and insightful. Like the pics too.
I really loved using the first model of the GR, but mine fell victim to a large dust spot while I was on a really special trip and I haven’t been able to bring myself to purchase another since. I’m using the x100v for now but I hope I’ll be able to get something pocketable that I won’t have to worry about in the future.
Sad to hear
It's easy to fix if you have screwdriver and open up the camera and expose the sensor and use a dustblower.
Nice photos, friend. Thank you for sharing your opinion on GRIII(x)

@@adrianlee438awww, thanks!
I got dust at 6000 shots that wasn't able to remove, just paid 35 usd to get it cleaned with and official ricoh distributor. As a film shooter, didn't had problem with paying those 40 usd because it's like buying 2 film rolls 😂😂😂 and there's no other apsc camera so specialized for street photography with that size, so for me is not a big deal.
Meh.....I used a Lumix LX3 in the bush for years.....the mechanism was exposed to all kinds of grit and moisture.....it still works a dream. General care ought to be enough to make the Ricoh last similarly.
Well thank you for talking me out of getting a Ricoh GR IIIx.
👍🏽
Should buy both, and bring both on a trip, each in side pocket haha
I’ve done it before. It’s a perfect combo
Ricoh GR is an amazing camera at what is made to do. Such a small factor cam that looks like a phone to feature an APCS is amazing. I think its the price that gets alot of people away from it, it is quite expensive (GRIIIx is priced at 1.261,00€ or 1,333$ at my local cam shop). Altho in my book worth it, because I know what this camera is capable of, majority of consumer market sees this as a "small" camera and instantly connects it with generic point and shoots from 2006 and automatically assume its gonna have bad pictures. Unfortunately broader consumer market still thinks that size=better picture. Shame really because this is a beast of a camera in such a small body.
Let them think that. The people who know will get it. The people who won’t will buy cameras they want. Everyone wins
Yeah while I do get that I also believe that to be a problem, Ricoh has a business to run. I also believe their problem is they are still quite relatively unknown outside the camera prosumer market, ie ask any random noncamera person about ricoh and they'll stare at u, while anyone and their grandma will shoot instantly about Canon or Sony. I believe they have an amazing opportunity, especially how the compact travel camera market has been going lately, specifically with X100V and sony's A7C. I wonder what Ricoh got in pocket to combat the market. @@Reggiebphoto
The Ricoh GR3 is a bargain compared to a Leica Q1/Q2/Q3 and image quality is almost on par with Leica and significantly better than a Fuji X100v
Yes but Leica and Hasselblad are somewhat what Rolls Royce and Bentley are in automotive world. No matter the price they will always have buyers, because people dont buy them for the spec. Ricoh does not position themselves in that way on the market.@@dirk.4711
Hey Reggie, thanks for the great video. The flash exposure preview is indeed a bummer. When I ran into it the first time I searched online for a solution and there actually is one. I do not remember 100% and my GR III is currently getting a sensor cleaning by Ricoh :D (they do it for free within the warranty period) so I can' test it now, but if I remember the trick is setting ISO to AUTO, so that the camera shows a proper exposed screen. Then you set AUTO ISO to only be able to very from base iso until one increment more and voila! Aperture and shutter speed to manual and the preview will be exposed correctly and the AUTO ISO will blink warning you that the ISO is not "enought" but of course in reality you have your flash. Hope this will work also for you. If it works for you maybe you want to make a short video on that to share it with the world :)
that's not really the case. i want to shoot in all manual with the preview exposure off. not auto-iso.
I know, sorry. I guess I am having a hard time explaining it. I guess you want full manual and the screen should show you an exposed image to see and NOT a correct exposure preview (which would be black). if you put ISO to AUTO the camera will show you a bright image, but as you limit AUTO ISO to basically BASE ISO you are kind of in manual, but the screen is not dark. Not sure if I explained it correctly now. Once I have my GR III back I will try to replicated it and post here again. But I can tell you for sure, there is a workaround to see something on the screen and still use flash (similar to the FUJI system were you set the screen to exposure preview of).
@2010andy1020 I hear what you’re saying, but that’s a workaround. If I wanted to change iso on the fly, I’d have to dig into the Auto iso and change the limits and that’s a pain and not the same as manual iso
Yeah, that's true, it's an very awkward workaround ... hopefully Ricoh addresses this issue in a future firmware update.
this video actually helped me out alot thank you
How so?
@@Reggiebphoto I want to get back into a hobby I once loved. And I wanted something compact and powerful. Your video demonstrates the good and the bad. I’m waiting for mine to come in the mail
nice vid but to me the biggest con of this camera is the lens retracting mechanism. Mine was stuck once and the camera was sent in for repair. There is no telling if and when it will run into problems again. Apparently, others online who complained about this issue as well so its not a me thing. But other than that, the camera is great and I could even live with poor battery performance since the camera could be easily charged with a usb c cable
yup, i lumped this con into the last one i listed. so many people warning about issues: dust, retracting mechanism, dial on back of camera failing. it is what it is. people who have issues with the camera tend to shout on the rooftops and comment on every video/post that they've had the problem. for me i love the retracting lens because it's what keeps the camera small.
First class, Tks v m - yes would like a video on the simulations utilization you’ve come to adopt that work best for you with this camera. Tks v m
You could shoot in RAW or adjust WB with camera's settings. Is there any sense to buy APS-C camera to use JPEG...No flash - have a look at the size of camera. Dust was the problem of GRII. GRIII has anti-dust system and it works...WB of Fui is flat and pale. Is it perfect? No cameras with absolute WB.
Sold my GRIIIX along with my Sony @7 3 and bought a Fujifilm X-T5 with the trade-in money? 🏴
My X100V has taken its place… but you enjoy your GRIII/X, they are great cameras.
Ive got all 4 of those cameras. And I enjoy all of them - x100v, xt5, gr iii and gr iiix (and the x70 too :D)
Good video, I am a Sony shooter. Who recently added the GRIII after renting one and using it extensively in NY, and on my local So-Cal. beach. I too bought that metal cap, forget frequently to remove it, and frankly I’m over that. Anyway I took my own (non rented) GRIII recently on a trip to AK along with my Sony full frame wildlife setup, and I used the Ricoh more, for walking around in the ports we stopped at and numerous on-ship photos….and its perfect for that. BTW, I purchased a Peak Design Field Pouch V1, specifically for this camera, 2 spare batteries etc. and that combo is an absolute win. YES-it’s a powerful little piece, and for anyone accustomed to a different system, it takes some significant getting use to control-wise etc. The highlighted-weighted metering is fantastic, and the raw (dng) files are quite malleable and fun to work with.
I haven’t tried editing any raws surprisingly. Just JPEGs
I'm really curious, have you done any editing post shooting on the photo's taken? I'm new to photography and would love to better understand the intricacies of this art :)
Please make a video about your recipes!
I did already
So you can see what your doing when your using flash go into your ISO settings and set ISO setting to auto then set the ISO auto upper limit to an ISO you want to use for flash such as 500. You should be able to see what your doing without the exposure preview
the point is i don't want to be in auto iso. i want to set all exposure parameters.
@@Reggiebphotoread his posting again. You set the ISO the ISO manually by using the limit function.
I saw you had the lumix s5ii in your viltrox 27mm review. Any plans of doing a review on that camera?
Yup. Eventually
Have you ever thought about or used the Fuji Xf 10? At one point there was a lot of comparison between that camera and the Ricoh.
I have an x70 as well
I've now seen two of your vids, and just gotta say it's really good stuff, I'm surprised you don't have a couple of 100K subs, maybe the market is getting over saturated... also, if I may be so cheeky and give some advice, I would say 'dude hydrate more and/or get something for your dried out lips' ...other than that, thanks for the work you put in your vids!
My lips aren’t dry. It’s scarring/skin thickening from eczema that I’ve dealt with for over 30 years. Don’t need advice on that. Keep it related to cameras.
@@Reggiebphoto my sincere apologies, please forgive me
@@Reggiebphoto I’m also embarrassed and have learned a lesson in humility, I strive to do better but it is not always easy to see where I can improve as a man.
Again, I’m truly sorry.
I hear you. Thank you for apologizing.
Without doubts, this the best street camera. Sorry, Fuji and Leica lovers. Ricoh has small, almost invisible size, and preset focusing which allows to take really instant shot out of palm.
I still haven’t got the hang of snap focus. But I think it’s cause I’m usually too close of range when documenting my family
Eh. Maybe when it will be weather sealed.
The Portra 400 recipe is interesting on Ricoh
It’s not supposed to match Portra 400. It’s supposed to attempt to match my recipe from fujifilm. I have a video on it
Hey Reggie! Do you have any tips for autofocus? I have the GRIIIx with the primary intent to have it with me at all times to take snaps of my kids (2 yo and 6 mo), but I found the autofocus to be limiting. Have you found that to be a limitation? Or just me as the photographer? Thanks for putting out great content!!
I always shoot mine in af-s. And preplan shots. I’m not one to rely on super fast af speed tbh.
Hey Reggie! I'm going to buy a Fuji X100V or a Ricoh GRIII but I can't decide. I already own a Fuji X-T5 and am really enjoying shooting in JPEG with your custom film simulation (actually it's really soothing after years of RAWs files to handle in post). I'd like a small little camera to bring always with me that could shoot film like images. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Pick based on form factor or focal length
I’m wondering when the next one will come out along with the next X100. Both cameras have been around a long time and could use a few updates. I don’t need to spend anymore money on a camera since I have the X-S20 😂
who knows.
Would you recommend the GRIIIx or GRIII and why? I'm leaning towards the GRIII due to having the ability to shoot wide and crop, but I'm unsure which to get for travel/everyday use cases.
Choose based on your preferred field of view
Thoughts on the Ricoh? Love it? Hate it? Let me know.
❤
I don't love it or hate it yet, but I definitely want to get one. Some stellar pics in this video Reggie.
Thanks
Love it. Have it for years and no plans to sell it ever. Got other brands that i use, buy and sell cameras or lenses but my GR3 is the one that i bring and use always. Portability and photo quality is just on point. Cons for me is just the battery life. Great video as always Reggie. 👍😊
Love it, and loved the GR II preciously.
I did end up with dust in my GR II and I have no idea how long it was in there because it didn't show up until I was well into diffraction.... which I tend to avoid.
I never saw it until I stopped all the way down and shot a white wall when I was intentionally checking for it.
I had the same issues with the metal lens cap and ended up only using it when I was packing the camera into a bag for a trip. With the GR III I picked up the Ricoh GC-12 case, which is expensive, but adds no bulk to the camera. I use that for pocketing it while I'm not actively using it and 2 years in I have no dust or scratches.
I haven't attempted the three dial manual setup you're looking for, but I'll give it a look.
Love the camera and the channel. I subscribed when I got into Fuji, and even though I've mostly divested in Fuji, I still watch whenever I your videos pop up in my feed.
Thanks for all the content!
I do not have any problems with auto white balance. I neither have problems.with dust. Maybe you can ask for help in the GR user forum?
Are you shooting in jpeg or raw,
@@Reggiebphotoboth
I dont know which one to buy this camera or Sony rx 100 VII 😅 I’m photgraphy lover! Need help …Which one would you buy for yourself??
… is it not obvious which one I bought for myself? Lol
yes please do
I love my Ricoh
100% on all point.
thanks!
Are most of the photos you shared taken with GR IIIx? Struggling between GR III and GR IIIx
Half and half
What do you recommend overall in this form factor and price range?
In comparison to what?
Thanks for your review, it was very precise, and has convinced me never to buy this camera! Unless, of course you’re going to shoot in black and white only!
The main problem I don’t like, is it has no viewfinder!
I’ll stick with my XT5, which I bought after selling my x100V. 🖖
👍🏽
So, the question is, hows it holding up after 10 months. I expect its like a cats litter tray on that sensor! 😬
Check out my hdf review to see how many dust spots I have on it
So many great photos!
Thanks!
Will you ever share your Ricoh recipe? 😅 struggling with the skin tone of my filipino fam, I'm trying not to edit in Lightroom.
Eventually. Patience
What flash do you use wirh it?
The white balance on my Fujis where incredible bad. The white balance on the Ricoh is spot on like on my Sonys. i can mix the raws of the Ricoh and my Sonys and there is like no difference
You’re referring to color science here (raw processing), not white balance. Especially if you’re talking about raw. I’m referring to jpeg white balance here.
@@ReggiebphotoFujis white balance numbers where always totally off. Never saw that in another camera brand. But yeah, the colors of the Ricoh are pretty close to my Sonys too (i only shoot raw with all my cameras).
From memory I think you are the only one who has mentioned white balance problems with the GR.
Great Video!!
Had a X100V for a couple years and have been debating on the GRIII but I keep thinking the 4 has to be coming soon, right?
I have no info on that unfortunately
The only thing i hate, its not fast enough. 7 Shots per second i want to have 11-12 frames a second.
Hi Reggie, thanks for all you do. I have been noticing my film simulations only stay in tact completely when viewing them in preview in my Mac. Once I put them in any other software for minor editing the vibe of the recipe is not there anymore. Is there any work around here (maybe fuji raw x ?) My tweaks are minor but it would be great just for a little hue moves and straightening etc.
it only works on jpeg images
Do you use any software to do any jpeg edits. No worries if not , the originals are just so rich in tone and like I mentioned they never retain that vibe or value if I try any outside software to edit slightly. Thanks @@Reggiebphoto
Lightroom or my iPhone. But any editor will do it,
