    I've always loved his music but I didn't know until a few years ago about what a fine upstanding gentleman he was. He protected his band and his family from outside influences. His pleasures were simple and his heart was gigantic.
    He was a fearsome giant on the outside and all heart and character on the inside. I wish I had learned more about him sooner.

    This is the studio recording mixed with audience noise and clapping.

  • @markhoffman2237
    @markhoffman2237 Před 5 lety +50

    All you commenters who laughed that this crowd couldn't clap and dance in time are talking nonsense. As twezzo99 pointed out, this is what documentary film-makers call a "needle drop." Murray Lerner, who shot this film at the 1966 Newport Folk Festival, lost the sound track of Wolf's live performance decades ago. So when they released the film of this show 30 years later in the documentary "Festival," someone synced this footage to the studio version of "Howlin' for My Darling," and then added canned clapping -- oddly out of sync with the song -- and a crowd roar at the end that's obviously fake. It's a total sonic mess. The crowd in this clip is out of sync with the rhythm of the song simply because they were clapping and dancing to something you don't hear -- Wolf and band playing live 42 years ago -- while you're listening to the studio version of the song. And the out-of-sync clapping is not from this crowd but from the badly synced clap-track added decades later. It's clap-track claptrap!

    To me, Howlin' Wolf was the top blues guy, period. He had a voice compared to a "blowtorch on cement," took care of his band, had no vices, and was a compelling performer. I imagine you wouldn't want to cross him. His "Rocking Chair album" is a collection of his singles, and the one blues album you should own if you only own one.

    It is the album version. This is not a live performance. Common practice at the time. They didn't have the technology to record live performances very well. They all sound like shit. The band is playing live, but they're probably not even recording the audio. It's just an issue of technology.
