One crazy thing about the banning of tourists from the geisha district is that people were physically harassing geishas (pulling their kimonos, following them around while taking pictures, touching their extremely expensive hair, getting in their way while the geishas were just trying to go to their destination/literal job). Tourists were treating these women as dolls that they were entitled to touch. Even crazier is that maikos (geishas in training) usually start pretty young (12 - 14 years old), so these tourists are harassing literal children. I feel so bad about how terrified some maikos might be about grown ass people chasing after them in the streets, yelling at them for a picture, or physically assaulting them to feel their kimono/hair.
Also, people are legit just destroying environments that everyone has a right to enjoy. There are so many people shaking sakura trees for the gram or just breaking off branches to take. I feel so disgusted by people who think they are so entitled to nature like that. They should just stay put and leave the general population alone.

The reporter saying, "I'm devastated to realize I'm part of the problem," and going on to say there is a distinction between that type of interaction with men versus women I think proved he got the point. That apology seemed pretty good to me. There will never be 100% perfect apologies, but if the person realizes the issue, admits the problem, and vows to do better, I don't know what else you can ask for. We can't keep bashing every person's apology without giving them the opportunity to grow from that moment. I hope that reporter doesn't take the further bashing to heart and just tries to focus on the productive side of the convo and do better work when it comes to female athletes.

Been here in Japan since right before Covid and there was a lot of talk by local Japanese about how much quieter and nicer the tourist hubs have been since tourism halted. This was despite the fact that cities absolutely dependent on tourism, like Kyoto where that geisha district is, was under threat of going bankrupt. The government wanted tourism back - the locals didn't. The geisha district being closed to tourists isn't shocking when you find out that people are just walking into homes along the street, and taking pictures of geishas in a country where privacy laws extend protections to people minding their own business on the streets -- among a slew of other issues

A Japanese CZcamsr by the Name SoraTheTroll clarified that it wasn't the entire district that has been closed to tourists. Apparently, it is just one street in that district that has been closed off. A street where Meiko's live, as well as Geisha's. Meiko's are Geisha in training and are all minors. This ban doesn't just ban tourists, though, it bans everyone who doesn't live there. Except for public services, of course such as cleaners.
The video where he shows which section is blocked: czcams.com/video/rM_DV_4XHYY/video.html Might need to go a bit earlier or a bit later in the stream where he even shows the entire district compared to what is banned.
So you can still visit the place and see them walk around, it's just that one street where they actually live that has banned people. Though taking pictures is still technically illegal in that district as it is private property.

As a licensed therapist, when somebody very publicly apologizes more than once and clearly recognizes they are “part of the problem”, I see that as genuine recognition and remorse of how their actions hurt others. A speaker’s intention and a listener’s perception are two completely separate things, and we ALL have at least one experience in our lives where our good intention is misinterpreted as malice. We also need to keep in mind that people can struggle with an array of things like Social Anxiety, Autism, or any neurodivergent diagnosis for that matter, which can make social understanding and interaction challenging. Additionally as a neurodivergent female myself, I don’t think Gregg Doyel deserves the scrutiny he has faced following his two public apologies and explanations. We all need to spend more time listening to others instead of simply assuming that our interpretation is the only correct one.

Yet we see people apologize multiple times for things and recognize they are part of the problem all the time and turn around and repeat bad behavior. I don’t really think this situation is that big of a deal but just because someone apologizes multiple times even publicly does not mean they actually feel that way. Especially those who’s job relies on public opinion I’m sorry, but you being a licensed therapist has nothing to do with public relations and what someone will say to cover their ass I do not necessarily think that he did some thing so horrific and that he isn’t sincere, but just because someone apologizes publicly doesn’t make the apology sincere, and some of the language used we often see in people trying to shift blame or excuse their behavior for example "well, I’ve done this with so-and-so so many times therefore I didn’t know it was wrong" or "oh well in my generation" it all sounds like an excuse and not a sincere apology. Again, I don’t really think this guy intended anything and just seems kind of awkward and out of touch whether he is neurodivergent or not but the situation doesn’t have any bearing on what an actual bad person would say to cover their ass when they have a job that requires the public to like them.

Speaking of Shibuya, the utter sense of entitlement tourist have about the area is disgusting, and that was really on display this year when the mayor “ canceled” Halloween in the Shibuya crossing area. Fast forward one year and they have done the exact opposite.
Also the opposition politician that did the punching at 18:05 faced retaliation from police on Wednesday's protest. And by retaliation I mean exactly that, the police swarmed him, a member of parliament, threw him to the ground and kicked him with their feet (he's got a broken rib + other injuries) IN FRONT of cameras. I'm born and raised in Lahaina. I can tell you right now that the pictures of the aftermath don't do it justice. Its one thing seeing pictures of it its another seeing it in person. It really did look like a War zone. What the Media failed to mentioned was that, Although Lahaina got hit the hardest, At one point that our entire island was on fire not just Lahaina. This wasn't the only fire also there was another one about 6 years ago that only burned around the town, but was bad enough to disable our power and water for 3 days. The reason why the agency chief didn't turn on the sirens was because I shit you not "The Sirens are for Tsunamis everybody would have run to the ocean". The Emergency workers were just in the dark as us as radio and cell communication went down since the towers went up in smoke. I think it came down to the lack of urgency and leadership from county officials that made things worse. As far as why it was hard to evacuate everybody there is essentially only one road in and out of Lahaina. I think the worse part of it is the EPA donated 150 million for the county of Maui to ship the debris out of state. The county turned around and said no but we will take the money and bury the debris somewhere on the island which really doesn't solve anything and make things worse for our kids down the line. One of my uncles said something to me a few months back he's 68 years old. He said he may not be alive before he can set foot on Front St again. That hit me pretty hard

They don't have to live right in the middle of old-town, they can live in any number of amazing neighborhoods across Amsterdam that have no such issue but people like this never consider that maybe they just live in a place that's unsuitable for their life style. They're also waging a very successful campaign to push sexworkers out of the historic red light district and into what's essentially a strip mall at the edge of town. Nobody wants or likes this except the rich fucks whos property value can now only benefit from the destruction of all that actually made their properties be worth millions. Wanna know what would actually kill tourism in Amsterdam? Banning non-residents from museums for the summer. It would decimate the industry but they don't do that because this is not actually about tourism.
Is the city center of Amsterdam a busy, noisy, crowded place, especially when it's warm out? Hell yeah. It's a major metropolitan area; people go there to do shit. Of course it's busy, noisy and crowded. If that's not something one wants to deal with, one has plenty of quiet areas of Amsterdam to live in. As a Floridian who grew up mostly in Daytona Beach in the 90s, I ABSOLUTELY get the limits on tourism, *and* I've seen the results of mismanaging it. When the people in office kicked MTV Spring Break out for being too loud and bothering the q-tips, that cost the town a LOT of revenue and it took quite a while, and a lot of investment in giving the town a "family fun" vibe to bring the "right" amounts and kinds of tourists in. Today things have bounced back, but in the interim, a lot of smaller businesses crumbled, and much of the older charm specific to the town has been replaced with generic "Floriday tourism" stuff that exists everywhere else in the state.
Also - You really got my hopes up when you mentioned a Georgia lawmaker getting punched and then put Marge on the screen, how could you play with my feelings like that, Phil!? I thought we were friends- and I mean that in a healthy, long time fan way.

Hey Phill, Venice student here. 🙋‍♂️
I am studying Urban Planning in Venice and been living here for a few months now.
Personally, I have to agree with you. Venice is overpriced and too crowded in areas like San Marco or Rialto because those are the BIG tourists spots. I never planned in visiting this city because of that, too many people, overpriced and never really cared.
The thing that most people get annoyed about Venice is not only how crowded it gets, but also how easy it is to get crowded because of specifically tourists.
Venice as a city with 200k inhabitants at some point (centuries ago) that lived comfortably. Today those residents (many students) are around 80k and with 100k tourists a day visiting the city.
Because these people that are visiting for 1-3 days go to the BIG touristy areas, those feel impossible. Tourists stop on bridges to take pictures and block tge passage for everyone behind them which makes it even tougher to go around, blablabla.
After living here for a few months I have to say that, because of that you run through the city feeling crowded as a tourist. After months here, I learned where to go to avoid them and it's just feels like a normal city.
About the tourist fee: it's 5€ entrance; residents of the municipality and students don't pay but they have to register in a online platform saying they live in the city.
And the idea is not really reduce tourism. I don't think it will work that way, but to have it finance ways to reduce the tourism consequences like trash around and improve PT.
Love the show, if there are any Venicians here feel free to correct me on anything. I'm a foreign student and don't live in the island. :)

While there, I had pleasure of meeting and interacting/working with different 'wildland firefighters'. Ones I particularly remembered being those who were part of Engine Crews and/or Hand Crews, as well as individuals who were Smokejumpers, and Hotshots. Even just listening to their experiences was something. 'Wildland firefighters' absolutely deserve the support.

It is also fair to relate to the reporter putting his foot in his mouth by saying something that comes off as wild when he meant it another way. If Caitlin has taken offense, that is valid and she is owed every apology, but her taking offense doesn’t automatically mean Gregg is a blanket bad person. as someone who lives in a tourist town (Niagara falls) I absolutely hate summer around here because of that. Tourists who don't know where they're going blocking small roads, because they didn't read a sign that said it's not a through street, garbage everywhere, people with attitude problems. They've started doing some things to mitigate it, but it's really not enough. When we have events for kids or small community events that tourists catch wind of it can absolutely ruin them, not to mention because of the heavy tourism that seems to be the only thing the city cares about while the rest of the city falls apart at least the area around the tourist sector looks nice!
Often times too, the tourism isn't even really felt by those who live here because of the big corporate interests that are clawing away everything from the residents. The irony though is they're over marketing themselves now lol even during the recent solar eclipse they were calling for a state of emergency here expecting a massive influx of people, but it was no worse than a busy summer day lol everyone thought it was gunna be too busy so no one came XD

Vegas, even as a tourist hot spot, I think is unique to live in because most tourists are not going to places where people actually live. They're going to the strip so as a local, tourists don't impact me in my day to day life. That is not the case in most tourist cities and I am very aware how disrespectful tourists can be. I can't imagine living somewhere where your daily life is affected by entitled and rude people who are only coming to visit and don't care about how they behave themselves in public. I'm an Aussie, and while we definitely deal with horrendous bushfires, too, where I've lived, we haven't had to deal with crazy bad smoke coming from a fire states away, but I do know of some others who have.
But, this all reminded me of the red dust storm from central Australia that blanketed the north-eastern coast from 22-24 September 2009, during a drought. It was freaky.
I'm just thankful we'd heard of it on the news before it hit, so we had very little impact from it in/on our house.
The storm hit our town in the early-mid morning, so some of us were able to watch it roll in. It wasn't like watching a normal storm come in, where you can see it coming over hours, and the sky is dark on the horizon. It just looked hazy on the horizon, and it moved so fast that others were taken off guard as many didn't realise what was happening till when it hit. If you knew what it was, you had about 20 minutes to prepare before it hit.
My grandmother knew a lady who hadn't heard about it coming as she lived slightly remotely outside of town, and she didn't really watch/ listen to the news. Well, the day the storm hit, she was doing her spring cleaning and had every window and door and some cupboards in the house open to air out the place and clean, and being inside cleaning when it hit the house, giving her no time to close up beforehand. Obviously, she freaked out, thinking some horrible disaster had happened and rushed around closing up and coughing a bit after but was otherwise unharmed. She was slightly rattled but was able to call someone and found out what was going on and was at least settled that nothing too bad was going on. Of course, as you would expect, she had a much bigger clean-up to do after as the sand/ dust got into everything. Sadly, she did have to replace some appliances and such but thankfully she didn't have to do the clean up alone as friends and family came out and helped her, and they got it all sorted fairly quickly that afternoon, and the next day, after the storm had dissipated. But she said she was still finding sand/ dust in places months after, and she also started watching/ listening to the morning/ evening news updates just to be a little more aware in the future 😅

I'm so glad that we can be able to talk about the expectations of how women, whether athletes or not, should be treated. The backlash was certainly warranted and he should know what he said was wrong. However, I ALSO feel like his apology was genuine. In the way his apology was worded, he didn't use 'that's how I am' as an excuse, but as an explanation as to why he thought at the time it was okay. But emphasized that he now knew he crossed a line and apologized to Caitlyn for his behavior.
Because a lot of us have grown up to empty promises and fake apologies, I feel like no apology is ever accepted anymore which in the end only harms the cause we're fighting for. If we hear people like Gregg apologize and say we won't forgive or allow himself to be redeemed, then what is he supposed to do? Just never make a mistake? If our actual goal is for people to be better, it won't be achieved by villainizing everyone who has done wrong, but by praising those who learn from their mistakes and allow them to get better. Otherwise, we get the opposite effect and instead find ourselves with a community of those who think that if one mistake makes them the villain, then why bother trying to do better?
In the end, it's up to Caitlyn whether his apology is accepted or not. And it's up to Gregg's behavior from now on to determine how genuine he is in his words.

I dont get the backlash to his apology honestly? like yeah, saying thats who I am sorry im a part of the problem im going to make sure I fix that is like....... the perfect thing to expect from an apology??? like what did the people complaining want? whether you forgive him or not is one thing, but like going after the apologies energy is so misguided holy.

Aloha Phil. From Hawai’i (O’ahu). Thank you for talking about Maui. The biggest fear right now is people forgetting the people of Lahaina. It happened less than a year ago but for most it already feels like ages ago because of how fast-paced the world. There are still families who are homeless or are paying the high rates of rentals and hotels while the government and insurance companies play a game of chicken. At the same time, developers and outside interest are trying to get in their stakes to capitalize on the land. It’s a mess that the people are trying to fight and I hope I see Lahaina rebuilt the way the communities envision it within my lifetime.
Please do not forget the people of Lahaina.

As a parent that wants to take their kids to places so that they can be more open minded, I’m understanding of why places are limiting/banning tourists. Even at home I’ve seen times where my kids had more manners than the adults around us. It’s mind numbing how bad it’s gotten.

Re: the Caitlin Clark story, I gotta say, listening to the remark, it sounded much more like a very awkward/clumsy comment than one with any intention to be creepy in my opinion. I'd have to know more about who he is and his history interviewing people, and maybe it's just because I am an unbelievably awkward and clumsy person, but that's absolutely how I heard it. I understand why people would be upset, but that's truly all I heard.

I live in Dalmatia, Croatian coastal region. Tourism sucks. Our costs of living are higher then other places, food costs going up, our E.R. gets overly crowded in summer, our roads are a nightmare because of so many tourists coming in, our beaches are a chaos, moving trough town can be a nuisance...The over all quality of life just plummets. And I don't even live in the worst town. You should check out the level of harassment citizens of Split live trough with Western European and American tourists pub crawls in the summer.
Tourist, young people that primarily came to party, treat the whole towns and people living there like a service to them, like we all live just to accommodate them on their holidays. I dread the season each year and can't wait for them to go away in the autumn.

When I was a freshman in college my history professor was doing roll call and when a student with a Hispanic sounding last name wasn’t in class my professor said that he probably didn’t make it through customs that morning. I was shocked as I’d never heard someone especially a teacher say something like that. But, when I brought it up to the dean he just told me those things happen and that I’ll be okay. It made me feel stupid like I was just a dumb girl over reacting and wasting his time. It felt so patronizing. After that I kept quiet when things like that happened again. And, it did happen again in other classes.

My prof would make that joke about a student with a German name (born here) because he was frequently late. Eventually he even started saying customs detained him as a joke when he was inevitably late. Eventually he started taking an earlier bus.

But I totally get becoming quiet after that because, like... what else do you really do in that situation? You did all you could & they proved they wouldn't do their part & listen to you as they should. I hope you're in a better environment now ❤

I am a tour guide in New Orleans, who does this because, as a Cajun, this is part of me preserving and spreading my culture. Also, I am in physical spitting distance of the most haunt mansion in the French Quarter , Lalaurie. I am speaking on my behalf because tourist help us preserve our culture. In a world that is entirely digital, I come from a physical culture. Our dances, our food, our music, cannot be captured by words, but by recordings and videos. The only reason I have my grandmothers gumbo recipe was because I followed her around with a camcorder with tape. But, at times I have to wait hours to get to my groceries because of tourist. I can’t get my favorite foods because the restaurants are packed. We have to make places “exclusive” or “locals only.”

Mariska Hargitay helping that poor girl who thought she was a cop is an example of life imitating art in the best way. I fell out of love with Law & Order: SVU years ago, but Olivia Benson remains one of my favorite protagonists in crime dramas.
Hargitay's performance made that character. If only more celebrities with influence and/or power followed this example on & off-camera, acting in good will toward innocent people like this child rather than abusing and taking advantage of them.

I lived in The Netherlands for 6+ years. You would have to pay me stoooopid money to live in Amsterdam. The number of tourists makes almost everything you try to do (errands etc.) *annoying*. I tried to avoid it outside the middle of winter.
