- The Mazda 787 and its derivative 787B are Group C sports prototype racing cars that were developed by Japanese automobile manufacturer Mazda for use in the World Sportscar Championship, All Japan Sports Prototype Championship, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1990 to 1991. Designed to combine a mixture of the Fédération Internationale du Sport Automobile (FISA) Group C regulations with the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) GTP regulations, the 787s were the last Wankel rotary-powered racing cars to compete in the World and Japanese championships, using Mazda's R26B engine.
Although the 787 and 787B lacked the single lap pace of World Championship competitors such as Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, and Porsche, as well as Japanese Championship competitors Nissan and Toyota, the 787s had reliability that allowed them to contend for their respective championships. The reliability of the cars eventually paid off in 1991 when a 787B driven by Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler, and Bertrand Gachot went on to victory in the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans. As of 2020, this remains the only victory by a car not using a reciprocating engine design, a record likely to never be repeated due to regulation changes until recently. For the 2020-2021 season a new FIA Prototype Hypercar class will now allow a Rotary engine under the NSU Wankel patents. It was the first victory by a Japanese manufacturer, and the only such victory until Toyota won the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans.

I was at in Le Mans in ‘91 ; in the middle of the night, all you could see was the head lights approaching and a brief glimpse as a car passed..however as the Mazda approached, the unbelievable aural sound as it came towards you was unbelievable and unforgettable… and that was over 30 years ago…. Truly awesome

I was there too… everyone in the crowd commented on it. You knew it was one of the Mazda’s coming a mile away. Perhaps I didn’t appreciate it enough at the time as I was only 14.
I was there in 1990 and 91 .Fabulous time. In the middle of the night from the Houx camping you could hear these cars from miles away as they made their way down to Indianapolis corner .Have some great pictures from the team building the cars in the old paddock and actually was able to purchase the team jackets which were on sale for 60 francs.We used to imitate the sound with a comb and tissue paper.🙂.Good times and good memories.

L F A is very close. I think I might prefer the LFA for being a little lower in pitch, but the Doppler effect of the 787 b nearing is very kind on the ears as well

IMO, the reason I like how the 787b sounds more than v10 f1 cars is that it had a deep rumbly idle while having a screaming redline. No other car/engine does that.

Yep, terrible fuel economy and inability to pass U.S. anti-pollution requirements doomed Mazda’s rotary in passenger cars. They just can’t find a material that works for that engine’s pesky seals. But don’t count out anything Mazda has committed itself to.

It’s so satisfying when a car sounds like a beast waiting to be let out of its cage, but then sounds like a beautiful orchestra while racing.
Certainly the loudest internal combustion engine in a car that I've stood next to. Great experience at night at Le Mans with the sound and fury and the brake discs glowing bright red entering a bend. Pete.

Was at Le Mans opposite the pits, when this little Mazda went screaming past towards the end of the 24 hours, making up time on the leading Mercedes which was stuck there with a mechanical. The cheer when the Mazda went past, after having made up the lap deficit was amazing. Especially exciting as Herbert was driving, a fellow Essex-Boy!
Love that there's other cars in some of the clips, so that you really get a feel for how unique & awesome the 787b sounded.
You can actually hear it coming..unlike anything else where it fades away, this builds up in some clips. Like terrifying, like an air raid siren
That's why I'm a loyal Mazda customer.. they never tried to be the top brand in terms of profit.. They tried to make unique things for the masses and that's why I love them. They watched us not only as money but as enthusiasts too till today.. they are one of the last auto manufacturers that do that if not the last
BMW? Porsche? They still build beast versions of their cars with manual gearbox if u want. BMW M2 comp. With m4 engine in it. Porsche Cayman with a 911 GT3 engine in it , intake right beside ur ear. revin to 9k in that small car. NEW M4 csl that is extremely lightweight compared to a normal M4. Absolutely mental. They listen to what customers and fans want to see and own.

@@juls6197 Mazda is/was affordable for people with average incomes, all the cars you mentioned are for rich people. (you don't need to be a multi-millionaire, but you need a higher income.) That being said I can;t think of any exciting Mazda in the last 20 years, so I am not sure what that other guy is hinting about.

Jep nothing special. I’m am one that has an old E28 and a E63 bmw. And bmws are in modern standards compared to other modern cars still BMWs

If the FIA allows the rotary engine to compete in any category today let’s say Le Mans or GT3(which both has been done virtually in Granturismo) everyone would know the Mazda race cars were approaching even if you haven’t seen it yet. In all honesty I want the rotary engine to return to racing because of the sound

Mazda is not tiny .. it has tie ups with some Indian manufacturer for decades and selling commercial vehicles with big success
Also the mx5/miata is no slouch like the WRX. When the Lancer EVO faded away, the WRX became less inspiring and less soulful.

I crewed on an imsa gtp team in the late 80s. When we were at the 1987 grand prix of Miami. The winning Nissan was in the paddock right in front of our team. The Mazda team was just on the other end of the Nissan trailer. Being in the pits when the Mazda was down shifting coming into turn one was amazing. Fifteen feet away at race pace sounded AWSOME. If you haven't heard one of them live you should. Its way better!

It wasn't the fastest car when I played Gran Tourismo, but it's handling made it my absolute favorite! I'd go into some races underpowered and just out-handle everyone (GT2-3 Days). I think this is my most favorite race-car of all time- shame they were banned!

I love that idle, so cool. I got to spend the season in the pit crew of a Sprint car. I learned a lot. But the first time walking down Pit Row when they were winding up the motors had me jumping! That was a good year!

It was getting to the end of it's competitive life when I saw it race at Le Mans in 1995, McLaren had the edge, but the 2 remaining sports prototypes in the Porsche powered TWR chassis, and this 787 were hunting it down. 787 was putting in quali laps to catch the lead car having had a shunt. I'll never forget that race and that sound!

I heard this car at the Long Beach Grand Prix in April. There were also 2 other rotary powered Mazda prototypes. The 767b and rx792p. It was insane.
I did went to LeMans 87 to 95. At the 1990 race stood between the Dunlop bridge and the old Esses photographing the Jags! Mazda goes passed all noise and flame outs, and as it gets to me I could feel my eardrums were being pushed inwards amazing car the next year due to Imsa rules Johnny Herbert did his stuff and Mazda won. Jaguar best finish since the fifties 2nd, 3rd, 4th
