No matter how many times I’ve heard one of their songs, it will sound just as fresh as the first time I heard it. Big emphasis on the simplicity aspect. Their beats are a perfect balance of chill yet having subtle elements just enough to keep interest. Their songs are produced exceptionally well and listeners notice that. Very well done video!👏🏾

Thanks for such a thoughtful and astute analysis! I also feel that what makes NewJeans so distinctive is 250's fantastic love and knowledge and incorporations of Trot (which preceeded k-pop as the popular music in korea) - like in those upbeats. It must inform so much of his grooves and drumming and swing - and it feels special that NewJeans' might be going full circle, back to the origins through subtle trot influences!~ it's so clever and meaningful!

As a lifelong pianist, singer, and jazz musician I can say that lots of Kpop is genius. NewJeans is definitely one of the groups that got me into kpop. When I heard Attention for the first time I knew Kpop was something else that no other genre could match. Even Jazz, one of my favorite genres, can be less complex than many kpop songs due it mostly sticking to real instruments and not implementing other genres. Kpop is a mixing pot of all of my favorite genres. (rap/hip-hop, Jazz, R&B, electronic, and even classical) I wished I had discovered it before my mid 20s. The BTS songs I heard in America just didn't sound different enough. Newjeans, Red Velvet, Billie, NCT, Loona they are all different and unique in sound.

This is a perfect explanation of why me, not even a kpop fan, loves Newjeans...they encompass outside of KPop, and when everyone was trying to be bombastic, they took things back down to earth.
They're literally standing out by not shouting in a crowd full of people shouting.
Plus they feel so much more human than a regular idol, I know its probably a persona but they feel more like actual musicians than idols, dating back to the times of late 80's - early/mid 90's alternative era where genuineness and stripping down of music revolutionized the rock music.
Same as Newjeans taking out the formulaic "belting and rapping and aggressive (or overly cute)" KPop approach, 90's alternative straying away from Glam Metal's "Rockstar Persona", being more human and downright removing the "Guitar Solo" and overcomplicated riffs as a rebellion to that "Guitar Hero" persona....Newjeans is deconstructing how KPop should be approached, and they're bringing in more outside eyes to KPop to their fold. I almost convinced Newjeans is able to exist outside of KPop, that's how unique they are...but this is also, I feel, is why most KPop fans don't like Newjeans, because KPop fans are used to the aggressive, bombastic, and overly cute KPop formula.

Fell into Kpop at the top of this year and NewJeans instantly shot up to my Top 5 groups. You hit the nail(s) on why I'm so high on their music! Fairly simple in theory, but expertly crafted sounds that are so hard to ignore to those that are in tune with the beat in the background. They weren't featured here but their newest releases Bubble Gum and How Sweet incorporate everything that was mentioned here, and I love that the singles included the Instrumentals of each (which is something a lot of other Kpop groups do that I absolutely love!)

As an artist myself, I've also wondered what makes Newjeans different. You explained it really clearly, great video! Right now, in my own songs I produce, I'm already thinking about sounds, emotions and swinging notes (since I do a lot of soul, R&B, and came from a jazz backgrounds) but I love what you said about simplicity and I wanna challenge myself to work on that. Thanks for the reminder :)

Tbh to me it simply feels they use whatever fits. I'm sure many of you did all that. We have tons of samples spanning many genres and times. We browse through and try to find the best snare that fits no matter the genre or time it comes from, as long as it fits the song. So while we can analyze this and feel like it's intentional to mix these genres and times, it often isn't. Not everyone tries to sound like something else and new "sounds" often comes from messing around rather than be intentional.

The New Jeans do sound different from other K-pop girl groups. Their melodies are K-pop, but they sing in English. I have their first two albums, and I just bought the How Sweet single album. I think that the 4th generation K-pop music sounds more like 60’s Rock n’ Roll.
The third generation of K-pop girl group songs are more exciting. Their songs are more creative as early 1980’s New Wave was.
    The third generation introduced:
    multiple lead singers,
    vocalists bending notes,
    the ability to “Wail”,
    musical bridges,
    blues cords,
songs with intros and outtros that were pianissimo, retardo until the disco beat came in.
Many of the Lovelyz songs incorporate this musical technique. That is why I Love them so much.
Western culture songs that are like third generation K-pop:
Rose Royce “Oh Boy”, the bridge
Stevie Wonder "If You Really Love Me" for its drama and. excitement
Earth Wind and Fire “Happy Feeling” for its drama and excitement
West Side Story “Tonight” for its drama and musical climax
Ella Fitzgerald “Lulaby in Birdland” for its measures that get repeated several times as in K-pop.
Harold and the Blue Notes “Bad Luck” and “Love I Lost” for the musical lead in and the drama, tension and climax
The Spinners “It’s a Shame” for the way the lead singer takes the song from a quiet moan to a feverish pitch.
Listen to Twice "Precious Love." Then, listen to Mary Wells "When I'm Gone."
Listen to Girls Generation “Summer Night.” Then, listen to Stevie Wonder “Tuesday Heartbreak.”
Listen to the Mary Jane Girls “All Night Long.” Then, listen to Red Velvet “Bad Boy” and “Peek-a=Boo.”
    The K-popy -est songs are
    AOA “Luv Me”,
Odd Eye Circle “Girl Front”, WJSN “Super Moon”,
Oh My Girl “Banana Monkey Allergy”,
    BTOB “Winter’s Tale”,
    EXID “Night Rather Than Day”
    The Lovelyz
    “Aya Aya”,
    “Mi-Myo”,
    “Twinkle”,
    “Just”,
    “Hide and Seek”,
    “1cm”,
    “Dear You”,
“How to be a Pretty woman”,
    “Wak-Zak”,
    “Bebe”,
    “Take Me Somewhere”, and
    “Just Like Now.”
I found the Lovelyz a month before they were disbanded in 2020 and haven’t stopped listening to them all day, and it is 2024 now. When I bought their instrumental album, I realized how subtle their arrangements were.
There are some beautiful female voices in K-pop. But for me, the Lovelyz voices of Kei, Jin, Sujeong, Yein, BabySoul, Jiae, Jisoo, and Mijoo have a warmth that none of my other favorite K-pop girl groups do. Listen to Lovelyz “Morning Star”, “Bookmark”, “First Snow”, “Rain”, and “Shooting Star.” One of the most prominent things that separates the Lovelyz from other Girl Groups in K-pop is their gorgeous harmonies as a group and in sub groups of two or three members. Listen to their live performance of “Love, Love, who said it?”
I am not saying that what you have to say has no merit. I like the New Jeans and many other K-pop girl groups from the 3rd, 1st, 2nd, and 4th generation. But truthfully, I could leave all of the other ones behind. If I were to take a trip, I would bring all of my Lovelyz albums with me.

Ugh, I LOVE this video. I have a habit of calling things I love “not real”, and NewJeans, is very unreal. I also noticed I’m attracted to very melodically pleasing (?) sounds as like a BASE line. As long as u have that and a little kick in it, be it in ANY genre (my favs being rnb type and Jersey type), IM ON IT. And that’s exactly what NwJns has. And I’ve always wondered what and exactly how their beats differentiated them from other Kpop artists…which is the exact question this video answers so THANK U JOSH BAE 🙏🙏🙏 ur so cool

Yeah I was waiting for the simplicity point, I think 250 and FRNK have a better understanding of pop minimalism than anyone else in kpop and there’s so much space in their beats which just feels great to listen to especially as compared to the rest of the genre which goes for very maximalist stylings a lot of the time. But I also think in 250s beats he really loves having a sound choice or sample that is kinda wild and off putting and building something chill around it which keeps the beats from ever sounding cookie cutter. FRNK’s industrial hip-hop duo XXX is amazing and has some insane and creative production and 250’s solo album is revolutionary. Really sick seeing these guys working on a big group and I think their voice being allowed to speak is a big part of how refreshing and unique and great Newjeans is

Leaving this here if anyone is interested (for FL Studio) in the sampler if you go to the 'wrench' icon and then within the 'time' section there are three knobs that effect the time of when the sound is played; Gate, Shift, Swing. (This for sampler channels that plays MIDI notes within the Piano Roll).
Gate: "The time interval set with this knob defines the maximum possible length of a note event in the channel - i.e. long notes are truncated to the set length."
Shift: "Turn this knob to right to delay notes' triggering with up to 16-th note time period (one step)."
Swing: "The Swing Mix is a multiplier knob for the Channel Rack swing control. This allows you to independently apply varying amounts of swing to channels."
If you press "F1" key on whilst having the sampler open (or any FL plugin) it will open your browser to FL's manual and you can read about all the different controls and additional info for whatever you are looking for.
P.S. I use shift knob a lot to add additional swing or just to offset certain sounds. (Hopes this info is helpful to those reading this. 😇)
