@@victuuri_6739 Those horses are prized athletes and are treated as such. Their other life would be getting charged by bulls, bitten by rattlesnakes, and stepping in prairiedog holes. Don't get me wrong, ranching is fun, just fast paced with no weekends for most the year and always physically intensive, extreme adverse conditions and storms don't stop the work, not as much good food either. Top tier race and rodeo horses need constant excercise, and it makes them just as happy, if not more than prancing around in a hay field all day. I'm not going to do more than just acknowledge you may be right when it comes to Bucking Horse Sales, Bull Riding, Factory Farming, but these are necessary to our society and still carry more cultural weight than it does political. Horses are also damaging to the environment (In North America) and are one of the main reasons some of our native fish in the Western US are in critical danger. Laws are keeping them protected so they can wallow in sensitive streams as they please, and when they do need to be reduced, they can't be made marketable to others (not always ill-intentioned) due to your protection laws, so they must be slaughtered and left to rot.

never bet on a horse that is going up or down in distance by more than about 100 metres from his last starts.

@@colb9916 Plenty of horses are capable of winning at distances of several furlongs range from race to race. By your advice you could only back a horse running within half a furlong of it's last outing. That is clearly unhelpful as it isn't really realistic.
By your rationale Sea the Stars would have not been worth backing right through his unbeaten championship career as every consecutive race was at around 400m difference up and down in distance.
From winning the 2000 Guinneas he ran next at half a mile further(that is around 800m) to win the Epsom Derby.

It won at 5/4 fav. For anyone interest or who's tried to look this up on the racing post website, It doesn't show up. I did a bit of research and the horse ran a couple more times in Britain for William Haggas under the name 'Headway' before transferring to L Ho in Hong Kong and having it's name subsequently changed to 'Happy Family'. It has run only at Sha Tin and Happy Valley (both Hong Kong courses) since then. All it's previous runs in Britain have been re-named on the racingpost site and now show 'Happy Family' instead of headway. That's why you can't get any data on it if you type in Headway, it comes up on the search results as Headway (GB) - 2015 but when you click it it says the page can't be found. Type in Happy Family and pick the (GB) 2015 and you'll get the horses data along with it's new hong kong colours. Interestingly it's shown absolutely nothing in Hong Kong though it does appear it's been entered in some pretty competitive handicaps and gone out at really big odds.

I see a lot of people are still getting the impression that this is one of the greatest horses of all time, so it's worth pointing out again that he's been hopeless since this race:
    12/14, 8/21,(Sold to owner in Hong Kong and renamed "Happy Family") 9/10, 6/12, 11/12, 13/13, 9/10, 11/12, 12/12, 10/10, 10/12, 10/12, 10/12, 12/12.

I've followed racing for a long, long time, and I don't know if I can ever remember another horse making up as much ground at Lingfield on the polytrack as Headway did in this race. He looked like he'd been shot out of a cannon the way he collared Rufus King at the wire.

reminds me of an old joke.
A bakers carthorse was entered into a big money race.
Against the odds He was holding his place close to the front, when from the crowd came a yell, "BAKERRR"
The horse being used to years of plodding around streets delivering bread, hearing that call, stopped dead.
The trainer, being a canny bugger, yelled out at the top of his voice, "NO BREAD TODAY"
The horse took off at a mad gallop, caught up to the field and won by 2 lengths. :))

@@gregthanks4757 It won at 5/4 fav - the horse ran a couple more times in Britain for William Haggas under the name 'Headway' before transferring to L Ho in Hong Kong and having it's name subsequently changed to 'Happy Family'. It has run only at Sha Tin and Happy Valley (both Hong Kong courses) since then. All it's previous runs in Britain have been re-named on the racingpost site and now show 'Happy Family' instead of headway. That's why you can't get any data on it if you type in Headway, it comes up on the search results as (GB) - 2015 but when you click it it says the page can't be found.
