So Clancy did pass. I assumed as I’ve slipped away from my early sobriety hero. I came back tonight because I’m lost again. I’m back at the mtgs. and listening Thank you Never forget meeting you Just one of your many unknown grateful friends who you’ve helped Thank you.
AA is not only for alcoholics. Clancy himself will tell you of a certain meeting called "The Santa Monica Way of Life Group" meeting , in which friends and family, all of whom are non alcoholic , are invited to give anniversary or birthday people celebrating another year of sobriety a cake with candles to be blown out. Open meetings are for anyone to audit. Closed meetings are only for those identifying themselves as alcoholics.
+heavensbutterflies But the ailment that AA is intended to treat is alcoholism. While others are welcome to attend open meetings, it is the process of one alcoholic helping another alcoholic that makes it work. Singleness of purpose is an important component of AA's ability to work and is critical to the process of identification. AA isn't intended to treat over eaters, gamblers, the families of alcoholics, other addictions etc. There are other groups for those things. AA's primary purpose is for alcoholics to Stay sober and to help other Alcoholics achieve sobriety(through identification). That was the point of his talk. Give it a re-listen as he makes that pretty clear. But yes, having family celebrate another year of sobriety with you is always a nice change from the way we used to live our lives and thats a great thing to do at open meetings. :)
Probably his best speech. Rich in storytelling and history.
