I got a chance to visit down town when I was sent to Sheppard AFB for tech training to be a telephone linesman from Sep. 1979 - Jan. 1980. Loved it.
This is a very good portrayal of the fair city of Wichita Falls. I have lived here since 1964 and am convinced there is no where better to live. It should be noted that the store where Zales first started was originally built in 1884 by J.C.Ward. He operated a dry goods store there for many years. Like Kemp and Kell, he was an excellent organizer and town builder. He even served as Fire Chief from 1893 to 1904. Another fact overlooked was that the First United Methodist Church was the first church in Wichita Falls. We do indeed have a very rich history in Wichita Falls.
I enjoyed living in Wichita Falls in the early 80's. I still visit there from time to time. Thank you for sharing this video
My mother use to work at that Zales Store. I have her 5 year pin in a box. Zales was the first store to offer Credit to Service Men after the War. I still have stuff in my house that came from that store!! I have a pin for sale on PoshMark now that came from there!! AND, in my garage I have one of the wooden desks that the watch repairman used. It didn't come from that store tho. Memories!!
The old Zales building is now called the karet bar and bistro it's a very upscale restaurant it also has a cupcake business owned by the same people.
The "original Zales" I remember was on Scott and the building you showed was Browns Jewelry and Loan...but that was back in the 50's and 60's....I do remember the fire department and police station being near there too....
it definitely was Browns, I worked there for a short stint before the Navy, 1969.
Are those swastikas at 2:15? What building did that use to be?
That is the Hamilton building and the building remains in wf today! Those are actually Indian peace signs.
The narrator talks about them in the video. The building was constructed in the '20's...before those would have been considered...questionable.
My oldest child was born at Wichita General.
Wait, I was born in Bethania hospital in 1966. What happened to it?
Wichita General and Bethania were bought by some medical conglomerate and renamed United Regional Health Care System. Rider, Hirschi and Old High will no longer be high schools after the 2023-24 school year. They are building two new high schools - Wichita Falls Legacy High School (the Leopards) and Wichita Falls Memorial High (the Mavericks). I won't even go into the changes they've made with the elementary and junior high schools!
If you like Extreme heat this is the place to move!! The only other hottest place is HELL." Take your pick"
Hmm ugh falls town
