  • This is a quick video to show how the chair's maker vise is used and what is used for, I have received many requests to show that, I missed this part on my previous video, apologies for that. Thank you for your interest.

    Perfectly matching cuts, pretty cool device.

    I like that saw you have . A Japanese saw blade and a handle of ones own making would be a good project. But of course that vise is the perfect companion for it also.

    Like I said before in the other video, this could be done with a regular vise.
    Now that tool, that may be worth making a video on.

      There is no way any regular vise has jaws perfectly parallel enough to do the tenon shoulder cuts this way.
      The cheeks on the other hand, yeah this vise doesn't do anything you need.

    I watched the Chair makers vise being made so I had to watch this one too. I forgot to speak on the saw u use on the flat. That's ur own invention, is it? I've not seen that type of saw used before. It's a brilliant way of cutting level if its set up correctly and u have it set up correctly. I think I need to practice my sawing technique a heck of a lot more now. I was found wanting last night in my shop.
    mAYBE MY CHEAPER TENON SAW IS USELESS BUT i WAS THINKING OF TRYING A WOODEN HANDLE ON IT. iT'S ONLY A CHEAP iRWIN TENON SAW.
    I'm going to need to upgrade some of my tools like my hand saws soon. It'd defo be worth the change bcos I'm enjoying working with the hand tools more and more. My chisel work is dour too but I'm getting better. I really like hand plaining now..
    Great video again pal. Enjoying ur content

      Thx buddy, for your time and glad you found something useful in what I make.
      Can’t say I have invented something here but maybe utilizing an existing tool in a different way 🤔

    Very nice. Wondered about this when seeing the build video.
    Did you make the saw? It looks suspiciously like a piece of stair rail with an embedded saw blade

    I made something kinda sorta similar for steel (better not put the link here but it's on my channel), it could be modified to work on wood (a clamping surface held at 90 degrees to the top surface) but it wouldn't be as nice as yours. I love that saw jig!

      @@TheWoodCrafter1 please do, if you need to learn to weld badly it's as good a place as any to learn that. My workshop is mainly set up for wood, firestarting metalwork gets done outside.

    A shoulder vise can do exactly this? So can a fat leg vise and even a wagon vise.. what’s so special about this makeshift moxon vise?
    Oh, a moxon vise! That’s another one

    • @silverbackag9790
      @silverbackag9790 Před 2 lety

      What can it do that other vices can't?
      Raise the workpiece higher so the arms and hands match the task at hand. Not that other vices can't, but you'd still need an enclosure. Or get one of those fancy pattern maker's vices. Or get a bench with adjustable height legs (and that also doesn't rack). Or build a second, higher bench. Different ways to skin a cat.

    • @TheWoodCrafter1
      @TheWoodCrafter1  Před 2 lety +2

      The case is that other vises are not made to be perfectly square from all sides, this vise can cut all 4 sides of the workpiece shoulders to be perfectly square and aligned, if you constructed your bench vises with that accuracy in mind then you can do the same cuts but usually bench vises are made to hold the workpiece firmly and some vises jaws are 5 to 6 degrees inclined for that purpose!

    • @101411726
      @101411726 Před 2 lety

      @@silverbackag9790 the idea of a second, higher bench, sounds just like a moxon vise to me. Which does sit higher because it’s typically sitting on top of the original workbench. 🤷‍♂️ but yes, there are different ways to skin a cat, I just don’t see what’s so special about this vise?

    • @TheJohnreeves
      @TheJohnreeves Před 4 měsíci

      @@101411726this vise is square from all sides. That's the difference. It's like a measuring and work holding device in one.
