Not another cancer story: Brianna Mercado at TEDxBend

- At only 22-years-old, Mercado lives by the personal credo "Go big." A professional dancer with two college degrees, she has survived bone cancer and works tirelessly as a role model for children with cancer and as an advocate for cancer study, treatment and prevention. Mercado is a native Californian, living and dancing in New York City. She is admired by family, friends and fellow dancers as a warm and glowing soul who has lived more intensely, intentionally, gratefully and lovingly in the past eight years than most people live in a lifetime.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

As a survivor of PMP Appendix cancer (surgery with hot chemo was on April 23), I get it... Though it sounds like I got off easy by comparison. But I'm so thankful to be 48 with this on my mind, rather than 22. I am - literally - back on my horse, and even more than I did before, treasure each ride, treasure each time I instruct, treasure every social interaction... Even got up and karaoked last Monday evening... According to a pub full of strangers and new group of friends I met, I have a quality singing voice... Blush! Dare I sing more? I'm painting pictures... I can paint! Am studying music and learning piano and guitar... Am also doing pre-calculus as a review! Am cramming in some things I crave to do, some things I didn't have time for, before I return to my sales job, because this is a time of opportunity. I haven't found my purpose yet though, but I'm looking for it, and I want it to be something that puts a smile on faces and alleviates anxieties, while making people feel they have an opportunity to do something they value too. Sorry if that sounded like boasting... Trying to express my feeling of being to an extent 'unleashed'. ;D Life's too short, and all that... My favourite moto being "Just do it!"

This talk is in my thoughts quite often. Brianna, hope you are doing well and staying strong. Thank you again for coming to Bend and shining a bright light on everyone! I had a chance to talk to you and your brother at the after party and I am happy that Bend was able to give you love back. Your talk was amazing - how you turned the same dance from something negative into positive. This relates to everything in life and was awesome!!

Its a shame that I have never met you....but now I know you. I get to San Jose about every four months. I would like to introduce you to my work.
I do sympathize with her and am very glad she is doing much better but it seem she exaggerated a bit when she said they removed the tumour and still didnt know what it was bc after a biopsy they would know real fast if it was cancer and it would take days not weeks
