Nothing beats a homemade pancake covered in butter and jam with a cup of coffee
So happy you said coffee..most ppl say tea.🤮 👌👌
My mom (gone 20 years this year) used to love Scotch pancakes - and so do I. I'll definitely give this one a go.
In Australia we call them pikelets....we make them a lot smaller (about two & a half inches in diameter) and have them buttered or with a bit of whipped cream and jam. Just perfect with a mid morning cuppa or for afternoon tea. When the Queen visited Australia in 1954 she was served these at an official function .....she loved them and referred to them as ‘drop scones’.
We have 'pikelets' in the UK too, but they are made using yeast and baking powder, every similar to crumpets, (same mixture but thinner - without the mould). Go well with butter and jam, not sure about the cream - but will try. Eat anytime.
Pikelets is a Welsh word that was anglisised in the 17 century in the West Midlands of England...
Ohoh...now I feel like having pancakes.
With warm Maple Syrup, Blueberries, and melted Butter... YUM !!! Thanks Cheryl 🥞
One of my favorite traditions from childhood. Mum served them with sugar and lemon juice sprinkled on top. No idea why I only make them once a year, as I LOVE them!
I have never heard of sugar and lemon juice on top! Sounds great, and I'll definitely be trying that next time. We always have sugar/cinnamon on top. 😀
@@juneroberts5305 That sounds delicious too! I never thought to ask if she got the recipe from her dad (Scottish side) or mum (English side), but her pancakes were much thinner than those pictured here, so I'm guessing it was an English one.
Never knew there was an Scottish pancake recipe.
They look delicious! 😋
Here in the Netherlands we eat more or less the French pancake. Our pancake is a little bit thicker than the French type. We eat our pancakes preferably warm with sugar or apple or sugar syrup on top.
There are a lot of pancake restaurants in the Netherlands. There you can eat the most strange combinations with pancakes.
For those who don’t know, Shrove Tuesday is the feast day before Ash Wednesday which starts the 40 days of Lent. But I just love any excuse for pancakes. I put blueberries on mine after I drop the batter on the skillet. Love them!!!
Pancakes originated over 30,000 yrs ago in ancient Greece and Rome but these are drop scones..origin Scotland.
Only if you are a Catholic lol
Good of You to mention the proper CANADIAN Maple Syrup, there is no substitute.
Or from some northern US states. We buy ours locally and our favorite is from Herb Gibson on Washington Island, Wisconsin. He taps his own trees and boils down enough for family, friends, and a few old-time folks like us who know he might have a few extra bottles he's willing to sell. Wherever it's from, the real stuff is miles better than any mass-manufactured maple-flavored syrup! Cheers to all those who produce it!
Very similar to my US recipe, here in the South. I use buttermilk and a teaspoon of vanilla. For my grands, I'll add in some mini chocolate chips (which require cleaning the pan after each pancake) but they love them.. We like either bacon or sausage with ours and for me, lots of steaming black coffee!
That is a beautiful stack of pancakes! 😍
Love this wee channel ❤
Thank you from New York! ❄️! Funny thing... I had a hankering for pancakes tonight! Grandpa hailed from the MacDonald clan, my Mother was very proud of that, so me too!
Hi from a McDonald 👋
Lovely "" they look so good 🌿
They look scrumdiddlyumptious 👁👄👁
Good evening, shrove Tuesday what else but pancakes 🥞 delicious 😋
In my family we make pancakes pretty much like that but I always add a bit of Rum aroma and/or vanilla extract because, as you said, by themselves they are a little bit plain. Also we then often add fruit to the batter (mostly apples, banana or berries) which is also very nice.
Just like our American pancakes. We do have different kinds ( sourdough, buttermilk, whole wheat etc) but your recipe is our basic one :) 💐🍃🌷🌹🌸🍀🌞🌵🏜️💐🌾🌱🌿🐣☔
Out of all the recipes I've read in my life you're is consistent ever time, also delicious. Thank you for this.
Just made this recipe , it is absolutely delicious! I replaced the mixed spice with pumpkin pie spice as I was not sure what the Canadian equivalent of mixed spice was. They are so good I am making a second batch to share with my sister and her kids.
Always enjoyed having them when I was a kid with butter on then later on with Golden syrup later. 😋👍
This is pretty much how my family have always made pancakes in the Southern US, except we add a little neutral oil to the batter. We also typically don't put that much sugar, if any, in, relying on the syrup to sweeten it. If we're feeling lazy and have it on hand, Bisquick mix takes care of the flour, raising agent, and oil, so just Bisquick, milk and eggs makes an acceptable pancake, too.
Bisquick is the best! I think even better than my homemade recipe lol
Same here my mother made them this way and sometimes added orange.
After watching your channel I just said to my husband " We need to make pancakes for dinner tonight " thank you for the inspiration.
My mom used to make this for dinner when my dad was gone on a business trip.
More or less what I told my father. He got a huge grin on his face!
For dinner??
@@boredweegie553 Have you seriously never had "breakfast food" for dinner? Yum! Especially if you typically don't have anything fancier than toast or cereal for breakfast. Pancakes, waffles, omelettes, quiches, hash, or egg and veggie scrambles are all great for dinner.
I love these recipes and the way she talks. It's like I smell the heather and the wild mountain thyme.
I worked for four years in a Scottish Heritage Center and I really miss the accent and the warmth that went with it.
Another wonderful looking meal
My Granny used to serve her home made pancakes up with lovely Lurpack butter and homemade strawberry or raspberry jam... pure heaven. We are from the Vale of Leven in Dumbarton but moved to Paisley on the late 50s then Peterhead Aberdeenshire in the late 70s. It is a wee traditional in our family that on your wedding day to get presented with the newest edition of The Be◇Ro home recipes book... We are all great cooks even the boys so it's just a wee joke/reference guide. That's you... your married now... tied to the stove... get on with it... lol xxx
I'm descended from clan McCallum in Argyllshire, and I was amazed to find your recipe identical to the one we used here in the US. It's probably come down unchanged through the generations. I didn't know there was such a thing as Pancake Day! What fun. Thanks from New Hampshire US! 👏😊
@TheRenaissanceman65 thank you for the history lesson 😁👍
I'm from the Smoky Mountain area and my people settled here many generations ago, a lot of Cheryl's recipes look familiar. And her accent when she says certain words is like listening to family.
@TheRenaissanceman65 LOL 😂 I tried singing that verse. And my husband said, "That sounds like a hymn." A tune just popped into my head. With a intake of breath at the word theme and not at name, it came out sounding like three lines with rhymes at theme, sing and king. Yes my theme sounded like thing. We use words and phrases I have seen in old writings. Not the younger generations so much (those born after 1960 have had too much influence from television and movies) but my parents and grandparents. If it interests you there is a Utube channel called Celebrating Appalachia, she talks a lot on the speech of old appalachians.
@@gidget8717 oh I love that 💕
@@WhatsForTea ❤️I came here for a recipe, I stayed because you sound like family. 😊
Yes .drop scones originated in Scotland but pancakes are over 30,000 yrs old and origin is ancient Greece and Rome 👌
Thank you Ma’am. I used to make these with my mum when I was little. Nice to find a good recipe.❤️🙏🏻
Those are the only kind of pancake I've ever known. I'm in America and I've never seen a pancake differently, nor made one differently. Making me hungry for them though.
Tried these tonight and wow! Delicious
Cheryl, Happy Shrove or Pancake Tuesday! Since I am the pancake maker in our house, I will be making some in a few hours for dins tonight. I make them virtually the same way you do. Yours look so good. . . Cheers!
Thanks for this! Scot living in Iran and tomorrow is International Food Day so the kids have to take something traditional in to school! I couldn’t send him in with Mince and Tatties or Steak Pie to share out, too messy! so pancakes are perfect! His kilt is ready and i’m just about to make the pancakes for 18 kids! ❤
Almond extra is a marvelous addition, so flavorful!
I was going to try 1/2 a tsp of cinnamon but almond essence sounds AWESOME xxx
I just made some of this, its currently chilling in the fridge :) Thanks for sharing
Cold pancakes with grape jelly was a treat when I was growing up. 😍🇺🇸
Oh my, you just threw me right back!
So my family wasn't the only one to put grape jelly on pancakes! Yeah, jelly was really nice on them-the tartness cut the heaviness of the pancake.
We call those "flapjacks" in Texas and they are served with lots of butter and blackstrap syrup. Mmmmm!
@Belle Whittington - interchangeable pancake and flapjack in our family. "Flapjack" in England is a sweet treat, made with raw oats, generous portion of butter, brown sugar and Lyle's golden syrup (a by product of refining cane sugar). Baked in a pan, cut like a bar cookie.
@@janstickles3035 That sounds delicious!!!!
Hey Cheryl, your recipe is essentially the same as mine. I add a drop or two of vanilla extract, and serve with butter and warm maple syrup. Sausage patty on the side, and a cup of hot coffee. Delicious! Thank you :)
This is exactly how my Grandma (and my Dad) made pancakes but the funny thing is her family is Irish. I wasn't expecting this video to be so nostalgic!
Happy Shrove Tuesday 😋 Lovely pancakes👌🏻 Greetings from Scotland. Have a lovely day 🏴 Drop scones look delicious.
Bruno 👁👄👁
My mother would make those pancakes smaller, I don"t like syrup on them, just butter and fruit sometimes.
In Germany they pu powdered sugar and fruit on them. I like them every way.
Very good looking pancakes.
Mmmmmm scotch pancakes and American style are my favourite ps here in the Cotswolds uk, I’m the odd one out!
Got to have the real syrup for Shrove Tuesday. As a Canadian I approve. We had strawberry pancakes last night with nutella between the layers and a light dusting of icing sugar for a change. Mostly because I forgot to buy syrup when I did my shop last week. lol
Hey Cheryl hello from the US. They look alot like my 🥞. Sometimes I add a little buttermilk and bacon grease. It gives them a nice flavor.
Lovely! I like a good pancake.
Ive tried it and literally tastes like heaven tysm for the video!:)
Similar to ours in Canada, but just one egg. Served with maple syrup, of course. Didn’t know it was pancake day. Tomorrow, then.
Hi Cheryl, I love pancakes, my mum used to add thinly sliced apples to the batter, those pancakes were fabulous! Your's made my mouth water.
My gran's recipe book has been lost but she used to make wonderful Scots pancakes - and the Lemon Curd to go with them. I remember that she used Cream or Tartar and (I think) Baking Soda - maybe because Self-Raising Flour wasn't available all those years ago?
Looks so good!
Made the pancakes, but added vanilla essence instead of mixed spice, my little girl loved them she said they are better than the fast food place with a gold M outside! I am now Super Dad Thank you x
Hi Cheryl thanks for sharing these look yummy, we some times sprinkle sugar and lemon juice over our pancakes yummy yummy. have a great day cheers 😋🥂
They look like giant thin crumpets inside. Yummy!
I made these today Easy to make and de-li-cious Thank you for all your nice recipes God bless
In my family it was strawberry pancakes. Yum!
I make about 4 or 6...put whipping cream in between layers then all around the whole thing..stick walnuts ALL over the sides and whatever you want on top ,a pancake cake.❤️❤️❤️
Hello from Ontario Canada Thankyou.Yes we have thee best maple syrup lol. Now I’m a scot but I prefer the french crepe. However you can also fill with savoury filling, spices, sauces etc for both. Oh ps I made your crockpot mince 2nights ago turned out fab! Blessings to you and yours 🐝🏴
here in Northern Ireland we have the same pancakes we buy at the bakery alot of our griddle bread can be traced back to Scotland
Nom nom nom 😋 mum used to make these for us as kids - love Scotch pancakes 👍😘
Yummy....I'm from east side of Scotland and we call them bannocks:)
They look delicious. I add sugar, vanilla and a dash of lemon juice to brighten up the taste.
Enjoy your day 😊
Love drop scones. I made them tonight too. I use a recipe from my mums old Be-ro book, it's ancient. Its obviously a similar recipe to yours but less milk and I like to add vanilla essence. I like them warm and spread with raspberry preserve... amazing x
Pray for us in Texas! It's -2°C in south Texas. Electricity is out, some people don't have water , my power went out at 4am, my house is freezing. Can't cook, omg so cold. Thank you for your vids, when I do get internet (it's spotty) I'm enjoying your videos
Use your BBQ for cooking your dinner, boil some water for a hot water bottle, tea, coffee
It is very challenging when the power goes out in the cold. Have had it happen in Michigan in past years from ice storms. It's disgusting that you suffer, not from mother nature, but, from politicians serving the greedy. Hope you've called all your elected representatives.
@@nebbindog6126 Exactly, those elected should be made aware of your displeasure. That's why they were elected ... to represent you and act on your behalf.
@@AidaJof we don't have charcoal or wood to use our bbq grill ugh. We have plenty of bread, peanut butter and jelly, and canned tuna and a case of water. And yes, our neighbors and I are writing our councilwoman, mayor and the board of the energy company here. We are so not used to dealing with this type of weather. We had 4 to 5 inches of snow!! I filled up a tub with water in case our pipes burst or freeze over
@@texastea5686 OMG - I so feel for you right now. This is a horrible situation and I am glad you and your neighbour are writing. Sending prayers for a quick resolution.
Haven’t made home made pancakes in awhile.... inspired me to do it for Saturday!
This looks so good , I feel hungry.
I'm starving Marvin 👁👄👁
Love it 😋
Wow nice vlog Cheryl
I'm not much of a pancake fan either. But when I make them fir the grandkids I use a similar recipe. But mine are never the same size like yours. They look delicious!
Hello, I'm a new subscriber. I love all your recipes. I made the scones and they were absolutely delicious 😋. Regards from Elgin.
We call them crumpets I love them xx
You need oil or butter in the batter. Also in your pan when you fry them. Just a little and they will have flavor. Also use buttermilk!
Oh, these pancakes look delicious. My mother used to flip them, well just one. She said you have to flip at least one or they are not McNichol pancakes. 😊
It’s paczki day in the U. S. !
Is it? Aye 👁👄👁
Yummy Cheryl! I made pancakes today. Just purchased a cast iron skillet and decided to make pancakes from scratch on Shrove Tuesday. I used self rising flour as well. I'm trying to use up this bag I purchased. Yours look so big and fluffy. I'm curious what was in that spice blend you used. Happy Mardi Gras from Memphis, TN USA
They look so yummy !! 🤗
On my honeymoon to Canada I went to have a massage. The beautiful young woman was from Scotland. She had your accent but also with a click added. We had a sweet conversation about marriage and her boyfriend. Boy I had to really pay attention to understand her. Lol But she probably had the same issue with me! Lol I speak very fast!!!😳 It was a nice memory. We are still married going on 15 years this May.❤💐⛪🥂
They look delicious
So dae you 👁👄👁
They looks yummy x
In New Zealand, its the same as the mixture for pikelets.
Mom use to use a similar recipe with a splash of vanilla extract. Looks tempting 😉
I made pancakes too, added chocolate chips. We top them with butter and pure maple syrup .
Enjoyed watching this x
Same here Maureen 👁👄👁
Some Ayrshire middle and a dollop of baked beans will add plenty of flavour 😋
These look delicious! Haha wish I lived in your house.... mine were pretty crepe ba dum tish 🥁 👀🤣
Mmmmm pancakes, my personal record is 22 paners as my mom called them.
22?? We're they as big as the ones she made?
22 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 you’re a legend 🤣🤣

Nice fried with bacon as part of an Ulster fry.
They look good. Making them this afternoon.
Made them a day late and I and wife really enjoyed them. The other six are in the freezer to be snacked on later!
I typically do not like pancakes...but these looked so good!! Might have to give this a go on Saturday morning! If anything the kids will love them!
Edit to add** I just noticed the end where you show the Isle of Arran which is where my whisky of choice comes from lol
Scottish Pancakes !!! Scotch Pancakes need wee dram in the mix ..just saying ... LOL cheers john

@@evil-scotsman335 Just a wee stack afor Yi Go... :)
@John McMunn, did just that last week. Went to put a bit of vanilla or almond extract in them for flavor... forgot I'd used the almond up, and tipped over what little vanilla was left.... spied the Tullamore Dew bottle, thought 'why not' and added a 'bit and a half' to the batter. Gave them a nice subtle flavor. It'll also make a good flavorful syrup, Cream Whisky's are great for that. Have an Awesome rest of your week and weekend. As to your "Just a wee stack afor Yi Go" comment... have you listened to Sir Harry Lauder's *Just A Wee Deoch & Doris (1912)* you'll enjoy it, and many more.. can be found on YT.
@@jddo3298 It was a Tribute Parody ... cheers
@@johnmcmunn3827, yeah, I know, lol. My comment on that part should have read 'You've obviously listened to' .... and then 'I've really enjoyed it, and many more.' Sorry about that mix-up. Have a Fantastic rest of your week and weekend.
Canadian Maple Syrup there is nothing finer! Very good for you too lots of minerals in it. Ha ha I thought oh she has seen Leeds video when I saw this one. Turns out I was
right. Was your syrup the Amber Medium or Dark?
Butter and jam! 😄🏴
Yum,these are great with jam
I love Scottish accents!
Made them but with 1/2 a teaspoobful of cinnamon yummy in my tummy lol XxX
I always thought recipes that called for mixed spice meant to use spices of the cooks choosing. Didn’t realize that was a product in the UK. Looks like it’s similar to pumpkin pie spice in the US. I like learning about the little things when I watch your posts.
They look fabulous Cheryl 👍👍💕
Ive yet to see two of the same pancake recipes... will be trying these next!
They look lovely gonna make these tomorrow 😍
Thankyou 😊
This is quite similar to typical American pancakes. The difference is a little more egg and less milk.
Very nicely made!
